though the catholic church is the largest religious group in the u.s., it comes nowhere close to having a majority of the people. the population is divided into tons of different groups. nevertheless some of the holidays are used by more than one religion. for example, christmas is used by catholics and methodists and lutherans and presbyterians and episcopalians, along with some others. even some baptists have gotten into christmas. by contrast, ash wednesday isn't quite so common as christmas.

I'd say there is probably a very high percentage who supported the ideals held by the loyalist paramilitaries, but id also have to say that the support percentage would drop dramatically on the death of innocents, i think that really goes without saying. though the catholic church is the largest religious group in the u.s., it comes nowhere close to having a majority of the people. the population is divided into tons of different groups. nevertheless some of the holidays are used by more than one religion. for example, christmas is used by catholics and methodists and lutherans and presbyterians and episcopalians, along with some others. even some baptists have gotten into christmas. by contrast, ash wednesday isn't quite so common as christmas.

See one of my Catholic friends when I grew up in NY. I'd say "hey what's that on your head" not even thinking or knowing it was Ash Wednesday. Then when they told me....everything was ok again.

So how do you expect her to know if she's (presumably) not a Christian? OK, she could have done her research and not have put her fut in it (what if he'd really hurt himself or had some disease?), but you can't expect someone to know reasonably obscure things like that.

There are far fewer Catholics in the UK and they don't do this weird bit of symbolism anyway. I was brought up Catholic in the London Anglo/Irish community in the 50's and 60's, never saw this before. Depends who's doing the counting but between 8-14% of the UK population are Catholic, about half the proportion of Americans who are Catholic. Needless to say I got out.
