The music its just awesome, i couldn't never guess that it would be so different with a good card. Most of the people that played it will die without know this.
@mystftg I like how good it looks. It is so similar to the SNES version. Even the music is similar. It runs great on your system. How are the controls? Are they pretty friendly?
@theduke502 The SNES levels are closer to the PC version than any other console port, since they weren't based on the Jaguar version, which had reduced geometry and the texture placement was different
The music is bound to be similar, since it's the same song. But the SNES version uses better samples than most console ports (just listen to the 32x). Only the 3DO has a better souondtrack
I'm playing with keyboard/mouse, the controls are excellent. Beats a gamepad every day of the week
@mystftg I am interested in buying the PS version in the future. I own the SNES version and it is nearly impossible to beat for a number of reasons. The keypad movement is terrible, the game is laggy, the video quality is terrible (hard to find secret doors), no save points or codes, no cheats, and no strategy guide that I know of for the SNES. Other than that, it's a fun game, LOL! Is this the same as "ZDOOM"? I had a roommate years ago that had ZDOOM. The music was different I think.
ZDOOM is a source port of DOOM, that uses the source code that was released and improves upon it for more features and better compatibility for modern systems. I'm playing the original version 1.8 in MS-DOS.
The PS port should control better than the SNES version, especially due to the better framerate. The levels look different (like the Jaguar port) and the soundtrack and sound effects are completely different.
@mystftg I'll have to do that, thank you. I was watching you and another person playing SNES DOOM. I thought to myself, how do they know where the secrets are? Some of which I found on accident while playing, LOL! How did you load the program for DOS? What were the install parameters you had to use? I found a few copies on eBay. Unfortunately I don't have the extra money for it now. I hope one day soon that I can afford it ;)
@DenNukem2 Well it should blow this away since it's a fully featured sound module and not just a flimsy addon card. In addition, it's several years younger and today it's still 5x more expensive than the DB50XG.
If Yamaha released the MU2K in 1999 sounding worse than the cheap DB50XG from '96, I'd feel insulted as a customer ;)
@mystftg I have quite a few legacy systems but the most uncommon video card I have is the Voodoo 5 with the piggy back feature. I haven't used the system it is in for years but I still have it. I own the SNES version on Doom and it is like impossible to beat, LOL! 22 levels? really? I got to level 11 and gave up, LOL!
@DenNukem2 Yeah, I've got the DB50XG Yamaha card also, but I found this sounds just a little bit better on a Roland Sound Canvas SCD-55, or the Roland SCC-1. The DB50XG is an awesome card that you can get really hceap now on eBay. There's like four of them on there.
I'd like to update my comment about "weak sounding XG emulation" earlier. I've since got real XG hardware and the emulation (S-YXG50 VST) is, surprise, higher quality. However it still didn't match what I liked about the music in this video. So after listening I have got pretty close match after reversing the stereo (video has L&R channels reversed) and applying to VLC 10 band EQ "flat": 0 1.3 0.4 -3.1 -6.2 -5.1 -5.1 -4.2 -4.4 -4.4 global gain 12,30 in advanced option to give more oomph.
@fourbarposer Actually that EQ is still missing some kick in the low mid range but atleast it's much more closer to the video than the default. Given the *huge* difference I have to wonder if there was some bass boost or other EQ going on in when recording this. The awe32 may have some mixer settings or non-linearity giving the oomph. I recall from the reviews of old pc soundcards they could be far from flat in freq response.
Why play on a 1996 computer? Just download Risen3D or Zdoom and it plays it perfectly with tons of adjustable options gameplay/control/video and audio wise.
@illidanQc Actually it's a Pentium233MMX, but I tweaked it a little bit. The PentiumMMX CPUs are usually running at an FSB of 66MHz. Higher FSBs weren't used by intel on So7 systems, but AMD and Cyrix continued to use the So7 platform and pushed the FSB to higher levels for better memory and CPU performance.
My 233MMX is running with an FSB of 100MHz (at 2.5x100 = 250MHz). The extra 17MHz CPU speed don't do much, but the increased FSB gives the whole system a noticeable boost in performance.
@ab50721 Well, everyone's entitled to their own opinion and tastes certainly differ, so I won't argue about personal preferences on a highly subjective matter like this :)
Mainstream gaming market aside, the AWE32 didn't have a good reputation, because of the music quality, which was considered to be weaker than dedicated MIDI solutions.
In the gaming market, the card was really popular and provided music quality far above the usual SB16.
I had an AWE32, still use it and I like it a lot :)
@zarbocrak85 When it was released, the GUS was a great device as it offered way better music quality than the SB cards that were available in 92. The AWE32 came out in 94 and to some it sounds better, to others it doesn't.
Devices like the Roland SC55 or the XR385 do sound better than both in my opinion. The SC55, because it's just a whole different league and the XR385 because it's a couple years ahead.
That aside, it's still a matter of taste. Even I like the SB16 sound better in some games
@mystftg Yeah, I just pulled out my SB16, and it doesn't have the needed Waveblaster port. I'm not sure I'm willing to pay $25 for the XR385 (currently all the ones on eBay are going for this) and another sound card to add it to.
Do you happen to know a cheaper solution to get awesome sound? The SB16 just isn't cutting it for me.
@someperson42 Get an AWE64 Gold. You can find them on eBay for a comparable price to the XR385 and it's compatible with all DOS AWE32 games (which there are a lot from 93' on). However the EMU8000 chip and its samples produce a different sound than this. It's still an AIO solution, but it works.
@someperson42 i won't lie.. i don't think doom even takes the most out of the XG cards... There are games that use full advantage of the XG Soundbank!
@speewave I'd love to know which ones specifically use the XG features. To my knowledge there's just one game (Final Fantasy VII), that makes use of it.
All other games are just using the daughterboard as a regular General MIDI interface since the XG format and features never caught on in games. Same with Doom, it just uses standard GM features.
If there are more games with real XG support, let me know!
@macuserbrazil I'm not sure, but I think it's safe to assume, that Yamaha reused their midi samples in other devices as well. Even the much older TG100 sounds very similar, apart from a few samples.
I just listened some Roland SCC1 recordings of the same levels between watching this video. It's a close match! I think E1M1 and E1M4 goes to SCC1, E1M2 is a tie and E1M3 is won by XG sounds (not the weak sounding S-YXG50 emulation you see on many YouTube videos though!).
It's been years since I heard the XG versions of the rest of the songs but there's several levels where the Roland patches don't integrate as well as the XG ones. And levels that leans more toward synth sound XG excels in.
when i was reading about directx they were saying that gaming in windows wasnt very great but in dos it was better becasue dos allowed better access to the video card then windows did.
@michaliskebab I'm not using the Sound Blaster for MIDI, I'm using the Yamaha DB50XG wavetable daughterboard for midi. And a GUS sounds different, just check other videos on youtube, there's an audible difference.
@igorbog88 No Yamaha device from that time supports GS as far as I know, as it was a format developed and used exclusively by Roland. It's the same the other way around: Roland devices usually can't work with the Yamaha XG midi extension.
So it's just plain old general midi in these games.
if you wanted a PCI sound card to plug this board onto, you could look at the Turtle beach Santa Cruz (i think you'll be ok upto Windows vista, last time i checked)
and 2nd i think the S-YXG50/70/100 Soft synthesizers will work as a midi synth for Dos box, i can't remember if i ever got it to work
just wish i had some of my older gear, oldest i have is an AMD K6-III system i built 10 years ago (Good times)
@mystftg Have you heard the Sound FX Classic 3000? It was out at the same time and in the same league, some said it was better then the Gravis. It was definitely better then the Awe32. I had one and an Ultrasound Ace. Never got this Yamaha I always wanted to hear it though. It's similar quality.
I loved my DB50XG, except for the occasional problem with hanging notes or messed up patch sets. You can still get the same patches with the SY50XG soft synthesizer, IF you can get it to work.
@Diwwah As far as I know, the hanging notes aren't caused by the daughterboard, but instead they stem from the Soundcard it's connected to. For example, if you're using an AWE32, chances are quite good, that you'll encounter the hanging note bug (depending on the model of the AWE).
I don't think there's an emulator for the DB50XG out there. However, nowadays you can simply use MIDI soundfonts in Windows to get different/better sounding instruments.
ZDoom and other source ports support MP3 and other audio formats. It should be possible to record MIDI playback from these old devices into MP3 audio files.
It can, but not easily. Try finding the Yamaha SY-50XG softsynthesizer. It's got the same soundfont as the DB-50XG daughterboard. The problem is it's OLD and hard to get to work on a modern PC.
@raymarcher Well, the DB50XG is a wavetable addon card, just for playing MIDI files, so it still needs a soundcard. But since the AWE64 is basically an updated AWE32, the MIDI files do sound better on the DB50XG compared to the AWE's EMU8000 synthesizer.
windows xp on that machine will be fast or decent i got a cyrix m2 from 1997 and a pcchips m571 motherboard and a sis 6326 video and 8 mb of ram ahh and a sound blaster audiopci that sounds like that with doom and duke nukem 3d
@mannesx It'll be far from fast or decent. XP would work on the computer, but the performance will be very slow and I wouldn't gain anything from it, since there's no application/game that would run on the 1996 PC but requires winXP :)
A Roland SC55 or MT32 is probably next on my list for this machine, but the Yamaha performs quite nicely. I've still got a lot of videos to record with it.
If you want some specific tracks/games to be recorded with the yamaha, just drop me a line and I'll see what I can do.

That sounds completely awesome! Thought I still like Sound Blaster/Adlib quite nicely, this is a whole different thing entirely.

i like it, it sounds wicked in doom.

windows xp on that machine will be fast or decent i got a cyrix m2 from 1997 and a pcchips m571 motherboard and a sis 6326 video and 8 mb of ram ahh and a sound blaster audiopci that sounds like that with doom and duke nukem 3d

@mannesx It'll be far from fast or decent. XP would work on the computer, but the performance will be very slow and I wouldn't gain anything from it, since there's no application/game that would run on the 1996 PC but requires winXP :)

@mystftg yep but my xp was fast on my cyrix with 192 of ram (cyrix is a 6x86 cpu)
but... windows xp gaming with doom was SLOW and badass sound! so i go back to dos 6.22 and ntfs4dos to manage my ntfs partition

You sir, have made my day! :) Great video.
Though Doom music was made with the Roland Soundscape in mind, I'm VERY impressed how unique the music sounds and the quality of the Yamaha music.

Glad you liked the video!
A Roland SC55 or MT32 is probably next on my list for this machine, but the Yamaha performs quite nicely. I've still got a lot of videos to record with it.
If you want some specific tracks/games to be recorded with the yamaha, just drop me a line and I'll see what I can do.
