I have read that when Chief of the New York City Fire Department Edward Croker personally went to the ninth floor of the triangle company in the Asch building he saw, as he stated "bodies burned to bare bones, skeletons bending over sewing machines." he later stated that he urged "girls employed in lofts and factories to refuse to work when they find [potential escape] doors locked." this man must have been haunted by that tragic day that he always remembered.
the people that had friends, or family members that died, or were injured should have formed lynch mobs and killed the two owners of this company. they were not convicted of the crimes of manslaughter. they should have died for their crimes they were more worried about theft, then people dying from from a dangerous industrial accident. I am surprised that if any person like a fiance of one the dead female workers felt suicidal, then they could have killed the 2 owners before dying themselves.
The "No Locked Door" regulation that resulted from this allowed more then 7,000 to flee The World Trade Center on 9/11! Fact as regulations do in fact work!
Shocking? Consider this: The evangelical Christian conservatives of today would like nothing better than to turn back the clock to 1911. They oppose all regulations, safety, environmental, labor standards. And most of them would call themselves “Pro-life”. And while at the same time they want to make working in America so much worse the wealthy they support ship jobs overseas where it is like 1911. Very sad.
locked in with no place to go. shitty work conditions un freaking real sick and sad at the same time.the owner didnt even seem to care what happened. he should have been burned to death himself for this crap.
Tell you what if that had been my fiance locked inside that burning fucking inferno i would have got two nooses and a bottle of brandy and i would of had my own trial with a predetermined verdict as well as sentence. No fucking way those two jack offs would have walked!
I hate it that people are so ignorant, and stubborn that they wait until a tragedy actually occurs to make reforms. I will never forget the Triangle factory fire, and it's victims they will always be remembered, their deaths were not in vain as this disaster enacted multiple labor laws, and regulations. these victims made the work experience at the present (the start of the twenty first century) a reality because of their strike a year earlier, and their subsequent deaths in this horrible fire.
THANK YOU for posting this: I use this clip in my classroom and have had to use an old vhs tape! Been waiting for someone to post forever! New York is a Great doc.
@streiff100 too many ppl put way too much faith and trust in the word Never I think!" Never gonna happen to us Never going to happen here Never going to happen to me"This,Titanic and 9/11 are just examples It is a shame when arrogance takes over common sense!
Interesting how even up until 1999 people falling from a burning building 80ft. up was considered insane, and then just 2 years later 9/11 happens.

This was a wonderful documentary!

I'm surprised, given the number of deaths, the greedy factory owners
weren't subjected to mob justice. Locking the workers into a 9 story
building with all that combustible lint and cloth was an accident waiting
to happen. Excellent documentary and than you for posting it.

Amazing how it takes tragedy to enact change in most cases in most things.
