Hard to coomunicate with US people . Why dont you modify yourself to adjust to the majority rather than force the majority to follow you. You are a young country you dont know the wisdom of living long. God never bless anyone who doesnt deserve the blessing and future will go as th
@guoyueminglaoda I guess it makes no sense to be upset to learn and to speak english. Myself, I am not a native englisg speaker, but I have often been to China as a teacher. It Is really true that only a few students in the class can follow the lessons. Believe it or not, but if you want to go internationally, no matter whether in aviation, commerce or technology, you need to adjust to the language standards. No doubt, I feel deep respect for Chinese achievements as well as for its culture.
-Seems the Chinese-pilots that don't pass the vital English-speaking Control-tower language, -must be required to have an English-speaking Co-pilot or Translator there with them, to assure they understand the critical communications coming from the Tower; --otherwise we've human ChopSewie in the making. The Tower-controller is right to become rather upset with the caviler response coming from the Chinese Airline-captain that is rolling-on as though understanding what is being told to him..!!!
As an English speaking none American, professional pilot, licensed by both the JAA and FAA - very often American ATC do little to ease a potentially difficult situation. For example the controller in this clip has no authority to interrogate over the radio. He has a right to receive understandable response and to hold an aircraft until he is comfortable that messages have been correctly read back. Some controllers enjoy playing God and they are equally hazardous.
The recorded demeanor of the controller was not one of educated concern for safety.
Fundamentally, it is bewildering to expect that a raised volume and attitude could solve what an astute controller would have reasoned or suspected to be a language problem.
As opposed to being a facilitator, he decides to waste time issuing ultimatums that confounds the immediacy of the problem.
The entire HR department at this airport needs to be sent back to school
I cannot believe the most important , or I should say critical moment, can still be messed up by language barrier. Knowing the language seems to be the trend today. Should there be anything easier than simply speaking English like GUI system for traffic control, so we can breaking these language barrier?
I've met chinese people, who have been living in Canada for 23 yrs, and they speak just a poor engligh as those pilots do. 23 years !!! Also studied french with chinese in France. They really find difficult to learn western languages.
@cazcabral it depends...i don't think all the Chinese cannot speak western languages well. it might result from their poor emphasis. due to different language systems, u may find it strange to hear easterners to speak English, French...vise versa for us! besides, people from Hong Kong and Taiwan can speak quite well. why not Chinese?
Guy who teaches english for the chinese pilots has trouble trying to speak english so they should hire more natural english speakers for a better result.
@sqy391 that's absurd! These Chinese can't obviously speak any English at all or with serious problems. And what the ATC shall do, when there are dozens of other aircrafts on the ground and one of them is clearly lost and doesn't understand. that's why there is ICAO english standard, that's why any NORMAL airline company requires sufficient knowledge of English. I gotta laugh!
The guy at 1:35 is basically admitting that Chinese pilots are using pattern recognition instead of language comprehension to communicate. That's obviously a serious problem in the event of an emergency or any unforeseen situation. Pattern recognition is an important skill for pilots - enabling them to communicate faster with ATC - but it is no substitute for actual COMPREHENSION. Geez, ban these guys already.
Seriously, they need to be able to speak English. I mean not just the ICAO language. I mean English, english. If they actually learn the english language, they wouldn't be as confused.
Yes, most Chinese don't speak english. So what? Don't you know that US government is panhandling in China now, begging China to buy more US Tbill?
Chinese will be the international language soon when the US go bankrupt. Australian leader already learn to speak Chinese. You american are behind. No wonder your national debt is in such a mess. God bless america.
yup...it is a question of english speaking ...cos CN's mother language is not english...and most of them do not have a good opportunity as today...but the situation is changing from time to time...and it is obviously making progresses....I still have confidence to the Chinese airlines....cos until now ...it is the lowest rate of the accidents....and even I've no idea what is the tower are talking ....
it is so unreasonable to require chinese pilots to speak chinese, especially for those older ones.english is not our mother tongue not even a second language.there are 16.8billion people speak chinese everyday, why don't they learn chinese instead!!
well my parents they have worked in africa helping them build dam, chinese people also built school from them and teach them chinse~~well so if u go there don't be suprised that they can speak chinese!now see who is idiot?!
2. The language for all international flights no matter from what country or destination is English.
Singapore Airline pilots have mentioned serious concerns about ATC in Beijing and Shanghai speaking to them in Chinese. SG pilots are instructed to inform ATC in China when landing that all communications are to be done in English.
no you hukaris. English is the global language and all international pilots are expected to speak it and understand it. pilots in my country, english not being the 1st language are expected to know the language. Chinese is not the global language you moron, English is, so ATC should be talking to all international pilots in English and not Chinese. There have been air disasters due to language proficiency issues.
err, when considering that around 500 of their pilots clearly can't speak english (based on the video above), I wouldn't join their flights. If the pilot makes a mistake on approach or departure, bad things can happen, when not understanding each other, and that is why all use the same language, and that English is the primary ICAO language
it's not just a question of english proficiency, and it is unfair to single out air china on this.
even someone from london can struggle to understand someone from glasgow for example because of accent, a situation made even worse by poor radio audio equipment.
Obviously english is a skill that people like pilots need, but there is another skill called speaking SIMPLY. This is the skill many people in America don't have. Maybe the guy in Chicago could think of a different way to say the same question, instead of repeating the same exact "Have you been cleared into the gate?"
how DARE they humiliate the pilots like this...on national TV. people need to know this to know the importance learning a language, but THIS is making fun of people who are not american or do not know english too well. it's not the pilots fault, or anyone's fault. disgusting...
Singapore Airline pilots complain that when they fly into Beijing and Shanghai ATC use Chinese. After SG Airlines filed a this to ICAC. English is the international language for all international flights no matter what country.
The international language is supposed to be English, but in reality this doesn't always happen. Often ATC will use their native language when speaking with local airlines, even on international flights.
Not all SQ pilots can speak Chinese.Sitting in an ACC position i can clearly tell that the pilot was malay.(it was in europe though). but there is no excuse in not knowing english. Pilot's english level must be above level 4 according to ICAO rules.
外国人看不懂 I think it's the problem with kennndy intl airport.why it called international?? cuz airport can handle everything from different countries ,at least the major country like China.just hire a chinese american work in the tower and It can solve the problem
yeah, but do you realize how many more major airports we have than China? Easy for them to hire a few Chinese-Americans, they only have a few airports in comparison. It would be far more difficult for us to staff our International airports with Chinese-speakers than they have with English-speakers.
I just listened to the entire recording of this conversation, and it is not as bad as this CNN editing makes it appear. It was not only Air China 981 involved which got the ATC a little 'animated'.
Though I admit it is a serious problem if there is miscommunication between control and aircraft at busy airports like JFK.
it is hard for people to learn a second language, more so when you are in older age. The older pilots got more experience, so obviously they want to make the international flight more safe by using the more experienced pilots, language is not a big problem as long as they can understand basic instructions. Air China only had one major crash since its formed, so it's having a pretty good safety record, i fly this flight a lot, and nothing seemed wrong to me.
Air China has had many "mishaps" in China that went unreported. One was on a flight to Hangzhou in July when the pilot of an AC flight almost hit a China Eastern after he was told time and time again not to land.
WHERE is the slang in this video? You can't ask the questions any other way. It's the Air China's pilot's fault. PERIOD. I'd venture to say most of those leaving comments in favor of the pilot, here, are probably non-native speakers defending yourselves for marginal English. No excuses.
it may not be confusing to you, but doesn't mean everyone can understand it. If it was in a reverse situation, a chinese person might say the same thing u said.
Who wants to taste my general tso...you want to taste my general tso. I'm-a give it to you now. Who like my chopstick hit you when I shit with my little-ass dick. I'm confused why a chinese worship a japanese samurai??isn't that pathetic?? you know what happended on 1568?you know who's hideyoshi?if YEs and I pretty sure you're addicted to video games
Well Air China has a good safety record. That should answer your question. But don't get Air China confused with China Airlines which is based in Taiwan.
Every single air traffic controller in Peking and other chinese international airports speaks and understand english. I am going to start insisting that Canada enforece good english language only for all planes coming into Canada. It if for the safety of everyone, after all we all care about baby seals and polar bears, why should airline passengers get any less care and attention than something that is born with fur?
american pilots are not required to speak chinese in china, or anywhere for that matter. English is the mandatory language used by control towers throughout the entire world.
know what you're talking about before you post garbage.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
International aviation language is english you moron. Besides, chinese is a primitive language, they should evolve. They've had like 5000 years to do it, and still nothing. Same applies to freaking stupid chop-sticks!!!
wtf, the problem is that JFK guy was using AMERICAN English with some slangs. It's not just the Air China's pilots that have the problem. Search the youtube, you can find a similar incident. But this time it was a Russian pilot.
wtf, the operator thought everyone should understand AMERICAN english???? He has used non-standard languages during that conversation. It would definitely be the operator's fault. And he didn't show any patience either!
these pilots pose a threat to everyone, they can just as simply misunderstand a warning from the plane's flight computer and take a wrong turn.... i wonder how these pilots are able to pass the pilots exams, if they cant even learn english...it's a lot harder to learn how to pilot a plane...
totally agree with you... Even if I am from Mainland China myself, I have to admit it's not acceptable for a pilot on international routs and it's a shame. Next Time, I'd rather take Lufthansa when I am flying back to visit. - just wondering if the Controllers in chinese airports speak substentially better English?
Taiwan really wants to change China Airlines into Taiwan Airlines. For China Airlines, china means 中華, while the word china in Air China means 中国国际. There's a big difference. Plus I have been on-board China Airlines for more than 150 times, and see I haven't died.
the tower shd spk slowly and CLEARLY to the airchina guys & stick to std terminolgies instead of using layman language.they took things for granted coz eng is their 1st language, and 4got that the airchina guys eng wasnt as good and will mostly understand key phases like"Confirm cleared to the gate by ramp control?"instead of "have they cleared you..,"..RAMP PEOPLE cleared to the gate?",what sort of RT is this?these r perfectly fine by ppl who is fluent in eng but not for them;both are at fault!
This is horrible, they should require ALL Chinese pilot who fly into the US to speak FLUENT English and ALL American pilots who fly into China to speak FLUENT Chinese...
Who wants to taste my general tso...you want to taste my general tso. I'm-a give it to you now. Who like my chopstick hit you when I shit with my little-ass dick. Hold your racialism one second, English is just a communication tool and be used in Aviation field in the whole world. No one flew in Chinese, nor in French.
Yes, Chinese is the most used language in the world, but , remember, that is only in China! It's only because their population, nothing to be proud, please.
No matter how sooner or how later, Mandarin will not beat the English.
English is a basic requirement for EVERYBODY who wants to fly an airplane and if a billion chinamen want to fly, then a billion chinamen have to learn english.
american people use too much slang. You're in America speak REAL english. Even us in India speak better english than some people in America! Not trying to be racist, but i dislike slang!
To idiot a1kahest: WTF is wrong with you? Taiwanese = Chinese. One is People's Republic of (China) and the other one is Republic of (China). What you mean keep dreaming. I don't think anyone gives a fuck if you claim to be Chinese or not. You are a disgrace to your roots. If your ancestors hear about this. They will slap you all the way back to the Qin Dynasty.
Fuck you CNN, from China.

Have you ever seen chinese drive? Hopefully they fly planes better.
qwerty3008 3 years ago
Well Air China has a good safety record. That should answer your question. But don't get Air China confused with China Airlines which is based in Taiwan.
socalazn168 3 years ago
Every single air traffic controller in Peking and other chinese international airports speaks and understand english. I am going to start insisting that Canada enforece good english language only for all planes coming into Canada. It if for the safety of everyone, after all we all care about baby seals and polar bears, why should airline passengers get any less care and attention than something that is born with fur?

So can american pilots speak chinese if not just shut up
wangxiying 3 years ago
american pilots are not required to speak chinese in china, or anywhere for that matter. English is the mandatory language used by control towers throughout the entire world.
know what you're talking about before you post garbage.

But this time it was a Russian pilot.
onegoodman66 4 years ago
I'm wondering how they communicate with ATC when fly internationally. Kinda Scared....
komankim 4 years ago
wtf, the operator thought everyone should understand AMERICAN english????

Feb. 16, 1986: Thirteen people die when a China Airlines 737-200 crashed on Pescadores, an island near Taiwan.
Oct. 26, 1989: Fifty-six passengers and crew died aboard a 737-200 that crashed into a mountain near Hualien, Taiwan.
April 26, 1994: A China Airlines A300-600 crashed on approach to Nagoya, Japan. All 15 crew and 249 of the 264 passengers were killed.

different airline. One's Air China and one is China Airlines.

forgot to write my point.
The one with CHINA first, is the fucked up one.
That's how you remember
sweetallie22 4 years ago
Taiwan really wants to change China Airlines into Taiwan Airlines. For China Airlines, china means 中華, while the word china in Air China means 中国国际. There's a big difference. Plus I have been on-board China Airlines for more than 150 times, and see I haven't died.

the tower shd spk slowly and CLEARLY to the airchina guys & stick to std terminolgies instead of using layman language.they took things for granted coz eng is their 1st language, and 4got that the airchina guys eng wasnt as good and will mostly understand key phases like"Confirm cleared to the gate by ramp control?"instead of "have they cleared you..,"..RAMP PEOPLE cleared to the gate?",what sort of RT is this?these r perfectly fine by ppl who is fluent in eng but not for them;both are at fault!
pingumy 4 years ago 8
Personally, "have they" sounds more like it is a question than "confirm." I'm not sure what they said really counts as slang.

Hold on one second. Whether the American pilots flying to China can actually communicate in Chinese with the Aviation control tower or not?
Chinese is the most popular language on the Earth. Believe it or not, Mandarin will replace the situation of English sooner or later.
And, JFK control tower guy should not had used slang.
gamloveinto 4 years ago
Gamloveinto:
Hold your racialism one second, English is just a communication tool and be used in Aviation field in the whole world. No one flew in Chinese, nor in French.
Yes, Chinese is the most used language in the world, but , remember, that is only in China! It's only because their population, nothing to be proud, please.
No matter how sooner or how later, Mandarin will not beat the English.
