  • i like the way u teach us thank you sir <3

  • What if we talk about both 'a specific place' and 'an enclosed place'? at or in?

  • Thank you sir

  • Thank you very much. No more doubts after this explanation.

  • very nice lesson.

  • Tnx teacher!

  • It is favorite and not favourite english professor......Lol.

  • @mr92fs1 The both are correct forms tho' FAVOURITE is British English whereas FAVORITE American English

  • It is favorite and not favourite professor......Lol.

  • Where is this class held... at?

  • Thanks you Teacher. I'll suscribing and i'll have a thumb up. Thanks a lot !!

  • TV with small letters?????

  • thank you Alex, i understood clearly the difference.

  • I left my jacket ON the chair At the kitchen In Spain. -Greetings from Guatemala.

  • Are your lessons british or US english ?

  • Good video, and really well explained

  • What a mess! "At" a specific place... but I say "in the bedroom." (Isn't a bedroom a specific place??) "In" an eclosed place... but I say "in the street." (And it's not an enclosed place!)

  • thank you very much for this lesson

  • Muy buen video ahora si me quedo muy claro como usar las preposiciones :D

  • i have a idea...

The book is on the table. (on ) its right???

  • Thank you vary much! I absolutely hate studying, but this made it fun. :)

  • ty

  • It takes 10 seconds to write at on and it WTF?????

  • Can somebody please tell me why it is "I have videos on youtube" and not "I have videos at youtube"? Or "I bought that on ebay" and not "I bought that at ebay"? Is it wrong to say "at" when it comes to websites?

  • @AngelOfEvenfall The use of the preposition "on" like "I have videos ON Youtube" is highly acceptable; since we see websites "ON" our computer monitors.

  • Thank you very much. I learned a lot of things that I didn't know!

  • thank you :)

  • Good , but we need more example 's while we using at , on, in

  • Please go to school to learn writing faster. It's bugging when people write so slow.

  • Alex - I thought your explanation was excellent. I recommend these videos to my online students. I thought you were for the USA - until I heard your "out." In my experience the only ones that pronounce the "ou" that way are Canadians and people from Wisconsin (I am not sure how people from Wisconsin have taken on the Canadian "ou" sound. By the way - my father was Canadian!

  • Nice and easy,thanks a lot !

  • the theater is in the mean time a specific place and a closed area...Dilemma !!

  • what if your on a dot lol

  • thanks :)

  • I like your class; it's simple but direct. Thank you very much Alex.

  • I think your vocabulary is way too complex for esl students.

  • @briangunn21 haha, you're kidding, right? he's using simple english words. Anyone can understand what he's saying

  • what if its a sloped surface? lol

  • I like ur handwriting:P

  • After viewing the gibberish and infantile etchings that many of you apparently consider writing and legible communication, I now have a bleak and precarious opinion concerning the present and future state of education.

  • Damn, I hope all of you are either foreigners or in the second grade. I have never encountered, except in such aforementioned cases, such horribly bad spelling and grammar; your erroneous language and writing skills are inexcusable.

The inconsistency of form, horrible spelling, mispronunciations of words, and scrambling of English word order are appalling.

  • The spell of favorite is F.a.v.o.r.i.t.e. He wrote wrong one.

  • @gofuckyourself768 It depends where in the world you live. That is the correct spelling in the UK.

  • How did you know that was my address? lol

  • I don't really remember that I leant how to use these prepositions but speaking english all the time helps a lot

  • good job hurray

  • are you an english teacher?

  • i absolutely loved the address example

  • hi anyone practice of each section of English add me on my skype id"sajjadhellokhankhan"

  • A very good an illustrative lesson, that is an excellent method to teach ... thank you teacher

  • I was just going to ask you to make a video for this. You are ahead of the game. I am native Spanish speaker and every time I do a paper, this seem to be one of my biggest issues. Thanks for the videos, and keep up the good work. I would like to see a video of when to combined word? Some easy examples are; worthless(worth less) and nowadays. Sometime I struggle with these type of words.

  • Cant we use ""My brother is IN theater"". Theater is also a enclosed place.

    Alex, Thanks for ur vdos.

  • I love this man, i love you :) you explain so nicely. I love you lol

  • Can you explain me with some example what means vertical contact on your explanation please?

  • Arrrrrrrrrrghhh!!!! I can hear the squeaking of the marker against the board.......soungs like someone is rubbing styrofoam.

  • Best lesson of prepositions of place that I ever seen! (Y)

    GOOD & thank's

  • thanks a lot...

  • i thought preposition to show place is 17 my teacher said here are the prep of plc above, among,at,behind, beneath, outside, beside, between,by,in,inside, underneath, near,on,up,over, under

  • what about virtual space such as internet. thanks

  • what about prepostions for words such as tv, radio , youtbue etc?

  • I am waheed from Pakistan and I would like to thank you very much for this tutorial.

  • Thank you! =)

  • i have learned nothing at this vid :/

  • What about virtual things? Let's say I want to install some software on a specific system. Should I say "I will install system X ON that system"?

  • I think it's not very good lesson

If we talk about picture we say I saw you in the picture

My brother is in the theater. Why not? He is inside the bounding box of the theater building.

  • @shtirlic76tube You are absolutely correct. There are numerous exceptions or cases where we use either "at" or "in." It can get a little confusing. For example, I can say "Look at the picture!" However, I cannot say, "I am at the picture," if my meaning is that I am "in" the picture. The guidelines I provided in this video are the basics.

  • @AlexESLvid Sorry but I don't think "shtirlic76tube" is right at all. Please read my response to his/her comment.

  • @shtirlic76tube right, and even you can say the car is a specific place :-)

  • @shtirlic76tube Absolutely right !

  • Comment removed

  • @shtirlic76tube You're wrong. If you're not with your brother at the time you're talking, you don't know if he's actually in the theater. He could be outside waiting for a friend. In that case it is correct to use "at" instead of "in".However,if you go to the theater with him,and he goes in while you stay outside waiting for a friend, when your friend arrives, then it is correct to say "he is in the theater" or "he's inside already".

  • @shtirlic76tube Hi I am on the bus... I am in the car? I am on the car? dangerous!!!

  • What if s.o. has an old cathodic tv?...it's not flat so his favourite program is IN tv .... XD LOL

  • hey Alex i have clearly the prepositions, At and In, but i still have doubts with On, an Example: the music On/In my hand is a power, is it right? ( someone who can answer ) thanks :D

  • @betoerick the music of my band

  • Thank you very veryyy veryy much

i feel that im understinding!! 10kssss

  • THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.... APPRECIATED FOR THIS LESSON

  • Generally 'at' is used when the duration of stay or activity is not long. And 'in' is used when the duration is gonna be long.

  • ok....thank you!..

  • thank you so much. I understand eveything...

  • that was clear.

but stil what's the different b/t (at home ) & ( in the house)

though it's the same place.. but we used different prep?!

    can you explain that plz!

  • @samaher9098

u can say at richard's house/home, i think its the same (using at because it is specific area), and in the house (in enclosed area). right?

  • Comment removed

  • wowww,it is good for me,very appreciate.

  • God bless you Alex.

  • Thanks alot we appreciate your help

I am libyan and i am too much confused with using such those prepositions, as you mentioned at 4:40 that in is used with the closed areas, therefore isn`t Jhon`s house in the first example is a closed area?

If you say cuz it is a specific area, then My bedroom is a specific area too!

  • @kabrera100 nice one thats what i am confused

  • @kabrera100

remember that a bedroom is enclosed area so we use IN, mate.

  • @xewaxxx Jhon`s house in the first example is a closed area?

  • @kabrera100

you could say: You are in your bedroom, at the table. (bedroom isn't very specific)

I think it depends on the meaning (it's often difficult to see (when you look at a sentence) what somebody want's to say). But yeah, there are a lot of exceptions, it's confusing.

  • THANKS FOR SHARING YOR KNOWLEDGE

  • you are a nice teacher. thank for teaching us :D

  • Thanks a lots Mr.Alex

  • thank you sir

  • for the second eg we could have used 'in' as well coz theatre can also be an enclosed surface ryt? ->

My brother is 'in' the theater.

  • Hi tell me why this word is write like this Easiest Way to Install BackTrack 4 On A USB Drive is correct bacuse LINUX WILL BE inside the USB not around the usb i don t undertand this sentence please can you explain to me why this sentence is like this ON insted the IN thank you

  • Excellent, teacher..thanks so much from Brazil!

  • Rueltee when your talking about someone who is doing something TO you, you generally don't need a preposition, such as your example. You would say "he is chasing me" or "he is helping me" sometimes you use TO "they are talking TO me", "he is reading to me"

  • Hello Alex Good day I'm ruel I'd watched your video and its understandable however I had a little confused?? how if I have this kind of sample sentence ( are you chasing at/on/in me?)(you can leave a comments at/on/in my facebook wall) please can you correct this prepositions i really confused about this...hope you can help me???

  • thanks

  • good teacher...congratulations

  • Thumbs up if you noticed the Simpsons reference.

  • Thank you, i liked very much...

    Very good!!

    Well done...

  • FAVOURITE is british english!

  • thanks, good bless you

  • AT theater?

Can you explain to me why you are using "at" instead of "in"? I haven't found yet in some online dictionaries that theater, home theater, or cinema are preceded by "at". I apologize if that's my wrong.

    Thank you

  • i should have a tutor like him. Nice work

  • Im not a native language but I thought I have good grammar, could somebody tell me why he write "FAVOURITE" ??? like that

  • @adnerbzaid He wrote favourite because he is Canadian, and in Canada you will notice that people use the british spelling rather than the american one in words such as colour, centre among others. But it's not wrong if you write it like that, at least that's what I've been told.

  • @odesasmty

    thank you! :)

  • it was superb SIR...

  • Bed is a flat surface right ? , how come we say "in bed" but not "on bed" .? :)

  • bed it's a frame and matress it's where you lay (in) down

  • if i say, "He is at the school." is it wrong? if yes. why?

By saying this sentence, i am pointing to a building which is used as a school. what do you say?

  • @foyzulkarim just say he's at the school :) your's it's right but we make small sense easy to read :)

  • I'm not a native speaker but isn't it possible to say "He's in the theater"? Or it's wrong and I should say "He's at the theater"?

  • If someone who can explain further what does it suggest if i say "im at the lybrary" and "im in the lybrary" ...i will deeply appreciate it.THANX in advance.

  • thank youuuuuu so much

  • brilliant

  • Than you, I will never forget these examples, and I will never forget Mr, Alex as well,

  • thank you

  • so, what's the difference when you say for example...

I'm at the library. AND I'm in the library?

  • @smetiks both are correct, it depends on how you are trying to say it.

  • l'm AT my house; ON my bedroom; watching a video IN youtube.

    Did l pass the test?

  • @JayJA5ON It should be: I'm at my house, I'm on my bed or I'm in my bedroom, watching a video on youtube.

  • @bongmanding haha yeah

  • @JayJA5ON hey it should be well i think .i am in my house at my bedroom.watching a video on you tube.

  • I pay my english teacher much money, but he dosn't explain the prepositon, just sad me: Learn the preposition, but how I learn if I don't understand?

Thank you very much the vid!

  • Really interesting

  • you speak too fast.

  • It is really helpul, but I've always wounder what the difference would be if I say:

"I am at the hospita" and "I am in the hospital", or

"I am at school", and "I am in school". if it is possible to say so!. Would you explain that t me please, I'd really apreciate it. Thanks.

  • Hi,

The difference is the following - I'm at school means you're going to school everyday. Let's say - someone rings you up and asks - hey, were are you now? You can answer - I'm at school - because the caller would most likely know you're a student and it's one of your common places to be.

But let's say, you're a construction worker and you have three different buildings you might be working in. Your boss rings you up and asks - where are you at the moment? Now you can say I'm IN the school.

  • Thank you so much!
