  • Better than Trey.

  • Phenomenal, I enjoy all your videos. How about taking a crack at first tube?

  • Thanks for putting this up. Great flow, nice job David!

  • just jizzed everywhere. no homo

  • wow....amazing, I tried to get this song using the tab,,,,it kicked my ass.....Its really amazing how spot on u are....

  • this is good, but the vox are clearly overdubbed

  • @themayking666 Thanks for the compliment, but you're clearly mistaken about the vocals.

  • @sneakypower my apologies i guess its just a little lagged then by the end and/or your using a rly good mic. which reminds me, what mic are you using?

  • @themayking666 The mic was the built in mic on my old Canon Gl-2. I have definitely seen many YouTube videos with lagging audio. Very Annoying!

  • SUPERB!

  • Great cover man!

  • holy crap dude!!!! you're awesome. i subscribed

  • wow only seen scent of a mule and this cover A++ you guys!!

  • Cool. Check out a video of my playing the drums to this song. Its my only vid so far, so you better see it!

  • while listening to all your jams, i can def imagine the whole band behind you.

  • my favorite part is when it goes up and down and up and dowwwwn in chromatic scale 5:25

i agree about it's ice... god song i'd like to see it

  • very very nice. well done!

  • ive been working on short acoustic versions of a handful of long phish tunes to throw in my live set......guyute, the divided sky (basically the white tape version is what we do), pebbles and marbles and tela. we do a full electric jam on dirt and a reggae-ish faster version of waste. cheers!

  • Great job! That arpeggio part after the country roll is so cool

  • Awesomee! I can honestly say you do it justice, not many people can =]

  • good things will happen to you if you post tabs to this exactly how you play it

  • All good except for the whistling, but shit, Trey can never get it down either...very well done my friend

  • Nice Job! Very Nice!

    KUDOS & *****

  • very clean, and great sounding guitar! what is it a Martin?

  • dude...those unison bends were dope. killer recording, man.

  • haha yout gotta love them tri tones...

  • Comment removed

  • props man

  • Very NICE!!!!! Difficult song to do as a one man band, but you pull it off very well!

  • Good jog! Please give famous mockingbird a run, lets see what you do with it

  • awesome man, great video

  • you inspire me! i have this book, but guyute has intimidated me thus far.

  • Of course it's intimidating...it's Guyute. The good news is, a year from now you'll probably have your version on You Tube and it'll probably be better than mine!!!! Let me know when its up.

    DH

  • Amazing!! Keep up the good work!!

  • Hey there I love your work! You guys are awesome and try to send your videos to all my Phish/Dead fan friends.

That being said I have one request. I know you like tackling the compositional technical songs so I propose to you to play It's Ice. A personal favorite of mine with a great groove, great lyrics, and awesome composed section.

Anyways I hope you guys got tickets to a couple Phish and Dead shows this coming Spring/Summer!

Take care and once again great videos!

    It's Ice!!!!

  • rrescozoo5,

Thanks for the comment. It's Ice is a great song. I will give it a listen with guitar in hand and see if it's doable for me on the acoulstic. Believe me, it's a compliment in itself that you think we should attempt it. On another note, we should have a couple of new videos up in the next month...one Phish, one Bob Dylan.

    Take care and stay tuned,

    David

  • hey man, i just found you on youtube. all i can say is wow. you cover all 3 of my favorite bands, and do it amazingly. Just started playing guitar myself (acoustic). I am 27 got a late start, but I cant put it down. You are great man... id comment on every video but i dont wanna seem like some crazy creeper stalker dude. Anyways, more Phish, GD, and Panic covers. where do i make requests, see ya. play on!

  • Ahhh...bit by the guitar bug. Good for you!!! Here's to a life of joy and the insatiable thirst for guitar knowledge. Request away! I'm always curious to know what people'd like to hear. Keep in touch.

    David

  • Can I get a nice Deep Elem Blues. I mean you said request away. :)

  • what scale is 4:15 - 4:28

  • Well...The first few seconds of that time period includes a few trills based off of a major scale. The remainder of that are the arpeggios of about 9 different chords--no scale to speak of.

  • wow - good stuff man!

  • Love it, man. I'm going to Phil & Friends/Allman Brothers on Tuesday. I'll be thinking about you guys. Glad to hear Phish will reunite for a few more shows, though I can't make it over to Hampton.

  • did you use tabs for this? if you did where did you get it from?

  • yo sneaky will i bee seeing ya at hampton coliseum this march??

  • I kind of doubt it- but if you'd like to take up a collection for me, that'd be great. I'm kind of hoping for a west coast summer tour where I (or maybe Hugh and I) could get on the open road and catch 5 or 6. It's been 10 years since I've done anything like that! What part of the country do you live in?

  • very nice. do you have the tabs posted anywhere by chance?

  • nice playing! is your guitar tuned a half step lower?

  • Thanks. Rarely do I (or "we" in the case of HMG)

  • Thanks. Rarely do I (or "we" in the case of HMG) make the effort to tune up to concert pitch. We just pick up our guitars, make sure we're in tune with each other and play. That was probably the case here.

  • damn how long did it takeya to learn that

  • I have two answers...1) About three weeks of breaking it down and practicing it 2) I'm still learning it.

    Thanks for watching,

    David

  • omg amazing man....im a fan of all the good jam bands and i watched ur other videos man....all i have to say is completely amazing. ill subscribe... have you head of the disco biscuits?? u should do one of

those songs like kitchen mitts or something.

but this was like a perfect cover nice.

  • i see a bass behind you

    play it!!

    nice video

  • I have the bass to play along on my home recordings. I love to play bass and jam with people but I'm not exceptional! What is it you want to hear on the bass?

  • weekapaug dude

  • Tomkts07,

You're killing me. Weekapaugh? Not likely (my slapping is awful) but I'll get crackin' and see what I can do. Why don't you post it and I'll learn it form you! Keep in touch,

    David

  • oh....thats not happening haha

just sayin. u dont have any bass videos.

help on the way has a cool little bassline

  • This is my favorite song of all time. And, dude... the last 9 minutes were heaven. Awesome job...thanks for sharing.

  • Wonderful!!! Thanks for the kind words and please keep in touch.

    David

  • ahhh ya hit that f instead of the d at about 8:50 after you nailed all the other sections including that sweeping part at about 4:20. nah im just kiddin, that was sick. best cover ive seen on here, especially for such a complex song.

  • I've always kind of been lucky like that!

  • damn...on an acoustic no less! i'm in the process of tackling this one myself, so thanks a bunch man! i'd say you're the 53% and the other guy is the 47% haha.

  • Good luck...and if you ever learn Reba, you can teach me!

  • after this i've just about had it with the technical numbers...i was considering making a vid of stash or divided sky though. i know a little bit of reba, but probably nothing you don't already know.

  • nice job, i enjoyed that.....very nice song for solo acoustic.

  • flawless

  • Listen closer, you'll find a few. But, thanks a lot for the kind words!!!

  • You sir, are awesome....

  • Thanks.

  • fuckin gold man,

    play some bass shit

  • you make me sick

to know you learned and played this

    so well

  • Hey guys.. just to let you know that you now have a subscribed fan from Central America. Keep up the good work, it is very enjoyable.

  • very cool. how many takes was that?

i've got some phish (& trey) vids on my page too, if anyone wants to check them out.

  • I think this was the best of four. It's a really long song and I was messing up around 7 minutes. Eventually I just said, "Just let it go and take the best one you've got..." I could have been there all day!

  • Great, Tucson's 'secret'

  • Someone from Vail...I might see you at the grocery store!!?

  • yes, I live in Vail, friend of mine told me to check out your videos

  • Thank your friend for me. Do I know your friend?

  • cant be less than 5 stars, incredible

  • I really appreciate that! Have a great day.

  • love it. you guys are great. cant wait to use you're vids to help me practice. keep rockin! thanks so much for spreadin it around!

  • WOw, I just got back from basic training because I joined the Natioal Guard so I was gone for 5 months. Before that I followed sneakypower and couldn't wait to here your latest entry. I am thoroughly impressed at all the new stuff. Great material for learning this one is. I do belive i requested it too a while ago thanks and it's good to be home!!!

  • Good to hear from you, old friend. I'm so glad you like our new postings (some of which are now old) and I hope the training was worthwhile. I also hope that you stay stateside!!! Please keep in touch.

    David

  • AMAZING!! good to see we still have some love for good ol phish! your so talented beyond your wildest imagination!!! KEEP PLAYING I LOVE IT!

    and nice fretwork man!

  • I found the chords for Gyute on the internet. Thought I was pretty good whistling and stumming my little chords for my wife and phello phriends (skipping any picking or solos of course). Then I saw this. This takes it to a whole new level. Your fingers are amazing. I couldn't believe the fretwork! Seriously good! Keep it up! I now have a new goal to strive for.

  • Thanks for the kind words. I'm sure you'll be doing all of this and MORE in no time.

  • that first sentence you said about finding the chords and playing for wife rings so true to me at this moment cuz i was just strumming away the chords and the begining fingerwork but as i watch our bro here I am reminded just how intricate and difficult it would be to actually get the whole thing down. lots of time it would take a non jedi to try and become one.some of these dudes are excellent and seem to be morphing into young-jedi.

  • you are increible !!!

    keep it up !!

  • This is the first time I could ever understand the words to this damn song. Thanks!

  • i echoe the comment by johnm14. excellent job though.

  • "Genius" is such a relative term. I believe that people consider Trey to be a genius because of his talents in composition and guitar playing in comparison to their own. Would Trey consider himself a genius? Does he stand beside Bach, Stravinsky, Paganini, Rachmaninoff, Charlie Parker and John Coltrane? Devil's advocacy aside, I love the man!

  • Kick ass man. you rock

  • wow you make trey's quick part (prob the hardest part of the song) look easy

  • You don't have to be a "fucking genious" to learn something like guyute or YEM by ear. You just need to know what your hearing and understand music. You have to be a fucking genious to WRITE something like guyute or YEM. Anyway. Solid job man. I should have some new vids up pretty soon you should check em out. David Bowie and Foam. And I found some mistakes in my Reba I think I'm going to redo it as well.

  • Anyone who enjoys my videos would love John's. Check him out! He's a great guitarist and I hope to learn some things from him.

  • thanks man

  • the beginning doesnt look to hard...mostly chords, anything would be greatly appreciated...thanks

  • any way u can post the tab for guys like me?? this is incredible i would love to learn to play this. u have to have it written somewhere...

  • learn it by ear - david did :-)

  • Solid, Harris... solid.

And it's true... I've played with this guy for probably ten years - he learns it all by ear!

  • Great fretwork. How long have you been playing?

  • Thank you. I've been playing for about 18 years. Shit, where does the time go?

  • that was just... awesome. put me in a better mood immediately.

  • hell of a job man! keep up the good work!

  • ok sorry for the triple post, but i used to drive a yellow 1980 volkswagen bus, which i'd named guyute. too long a story for here. over beers someday. p.s. thanks, again you drive me towards a nicer acoustic this much faster. do you work for martin?

  • speaking of trey, i must say that because you played this so meticulously to its form, trey's genius comes through. i was more mesmerized by the melody than by your fretboard work, though i'll go back and watch that eighty times. genius song, geniusly rendered.

  • 3:49 - HUGE SMILE

5:37 - i just picked my jaw up off the floor

6:52 - THAT'S HOW HE DOES IT. eureka for me. very jimi, too.

7:44 - only fish does it creepier - excellent work

8:36 - you're timing switch - your inner metronome works

8:51 - the clam, as you put it. the shaking smile is what makes it so Trey

  • Bullshit not 18 years.

How does he do it ? One word, TAB.

  • I don't get your comment.

  • I have played with Dave for years. Truth be told... he does not read tab.

  • Wow - great job. It's always fun finding a new post. Kudos on the song selection. I'm going to go try and find a 3rd ear.

  • freaking insane

  • another gem. keep it up!

  • I'll just go back to strumming my chords now...

  • your my hero

  • Holy Crap! Unreal. You have some serious talent. Thank you...

  • I'm so glad you liked it...and then just think... there's another guy who WROTE it ( and Reba, YEM, Mockingbird, All Things Reconsidered, etc) and played them from memory night after night.

  • God I know, how the hell did he do it?

  • to put it simply, he's a f*cking genius

  • do you tab these songs out yourself or use anything online?

  • I play by ear.

  • Me too Dave; hmmmm, you must use both of your ears then... ;) hugh

  • ...and I use my secret 3rd ear.

  • That's the only way to truly learn something. I'm sure it must have taken a long ass time to learn this one by ear. Kind of like picking out YEM by ear. Especially those chromatic lines at around 5:30

  • Hey there...I was just responding to another comment and saw this note. In case you haven't seen it, I posted an acoustic YEM. If you have seen it (or are not interested) disregard.

    Hope you are well,

    David

  • rad bro. been waiting for a new video and wasn't disappointed.

  • Friggin' Bravo to the nth degree you porker!! Lovin' this a lot. See ya!! hugh
