Why should we give a damn about exoplanets? It is not like we can reach one any time soon. Astronomers are just collecting more data of no practical use. Don't astronomers have to know about gravity?
So why can't they figure out that the distribution of steel has to be important in skyscrapers? Can't astronomers comprehend the physics of 9/11? Why should everyone be interested in the problem of exoplanets if scientists won't resolve a problem on this planet? Do astronomers have exobrains?
@psikeyhackr Ahh the classic "why don't we fix the problems on this planet before addressing others". SETI is actually privately funded. But even if it wasn't it's a drop in the ocean compared to other government projects. Don't you want a benign purpose that can inspire the lives of millions of children? The US already gives more than the NASA budget in AID each year! Cancel NASA and that's a good idea according to you?
@halcyondaze82 I didn't say anything about SETI and I didn't say anything about FIXING anything. But SCIENTISTS that have to understand gravity should at least be CURIOUS about how an airliner could obliterate a skyscraper more than 2000 times its own mass. But so many of them have been SO QUIET about it for TEN YEARS. That is curious by itself.
This is the best video since the discussion of the book FIRST CONTACT that had Frank Drake, Jill Tarter, Seth Shostak and the book's author, this is what I want from SETI, I love it.
@setiinstitute - I have a request, concerning the cut-out for the display of the presentation. It does not match the size of the presenter's slides. That's why there has to be this scrolling. I find this annoying. If there is a way to show the entire slide all the time, please implement it. Thanks.
@setiinstitute lol no worrys buddie humans are only a young species just keep up the awsome work what you guys are doin with keplar an we will find a planet with life an aliens jeez you guys only launched keplar for 1 year of all times that humanity has begun so consider this the beggining of the search dam keplar is so awsome im guessing about 10 years an we will find another planet that has life everything the earth produces leads to this moment an beyond thanks mother earth
@setiinstitute Jeez if you had around a100 keplars youd probably find a 1000 planets per week fuck, bill gates alone can fund 20 keplars i mean come on goverment ,they should help fund for more keplars an james webb kind of projects i mean the usa defasit is over 10 trillion dollars an thats 999 billion dollars per trillion i mean you could have atleast 20 of these things they know what there looking for already just every one should contribute, finding a planet with life would be REVOLUTIONARY
@bigwaverider1000 The design of the Kepler mission is such that only 1 is needed to tell us what we need to know. The rest can be extrapolated statistically from the data. But Kepler cannot tell us if there is life. The next step is to take the spectra of the reflected light. You can do this by subtracting the spectrum at its brightest, when the planet is beside the star, from that when the planet is behind the star. JWST will be able to do this in some cases... if we can ever get it launched.
Best S.E.T.I talk I've seen...Geoff Marcy is a great speaker.

@ 32:57 Geoff Marcy should have said, 'than do the bigger stars' but he said, 'than do the bigger planets.' Anyone else catch that?

Marcy rocks! one of my favorite astrophysicists. Exoplanets, what an amazing endeavor. 5 people believe earth is the only planet in the universe

@halcyondaze82 and this money is not going in to a black hole (so to speak); it's creating jobs as well.

Where did the colourful animation of the exoplanets' orbital positions come from? @38:00
