@sji123 Haha... Add Last of The Summer Wine, All Creatures Great and Small, The Antiques Roadshow and Songs of Praise. Guaranteed my homework will get my full attention. I always got better grades after the weekend then during the week.
@sji123 This man is a blood brother who knows some of my darkest and repressed childhood memories, except it was French and maths homework I usually had due in Monday mornings, ;-( I liked Bergerac a little bit, but when my folks forced me to watch Howard's Way it really pissed me off. All I can remember is a slimy guy called Ken, Maria off 'Allo 'Allo (best thing in it), extremely dodgy shirts and a fricking boat called the Barracuda that was sadly missing an iceberg. Sigh... ;-)
@actualitycheck But wasn't Bergerac on Saturdays? (That's rhetorical, I know it was Saturdays). Howard's Way was a yawn fest on Sundays but Bread always offered a little light relief before those Monday blues kicked in. That's Life! was always a good chuckle to conclude the weekend's telly.
@CnutRexAnglorum He he. You dare to challenge my nightmarish memories sir? ;-) You are right in part, but your answer isn't rhetorical. The series are as follows: Series 1 - 1981 on Sundays. Series 2 - 1983 on Sundays. Series 3 - 1983 to 1984 on Saturdays. Series 4 - 1985 on Fridays. Series 5 - 1987 on Saturdays. Series 6 - 1988 on Saturdays. Series 7 - 1989 on Saturdays. Series 8 - 1990 on Sundays. Series 9 - 1991 on Saturdays. My bad dreams must relate to the 1990 series. :-0
i was too young for the original, but i watched the repeats in the 90s/early 00's, I loved it, it was a nice way of spending an afternoon with a cuppa.
You know I can really relate to that, it's funny how we grew up loving these shows and yet you knew full well that it was STRAIGHT to bed after Bergerac, and thus the reality of school on monday! I used to bunk off school and watch ITV schools, feel guilty and then go back to school after lunch! ha ha
Maybe it was because I was a young kid at the time but the Bergerac theme and the prospect of an hour of the show to follow always sent me into a state of chronic boredom.
Haven`t seen B. since I was a kid & watched it during its run in the 1980`s. Saw an episode of it for the 1st time in 20 odd years recently & was wondering beforehand what it would be like in hindsight. Hasn`t aged a bit & was just as good as I remember it, much better than the bloody awful & lifeless serial dramas that the BBC churns out now.
It was a culture shock to watch a T.V. drama that worked again & it showed how bad things currently are in this area of T.V.
At one stage the BBC were seriously considering a Bergerac spin off entitled "Hungerford" but when they costed the amount of cigars they'd need they pulled the plug
artsalloverme:- darling i know its a fictional tv show and I have visited the island on holiday -i dont think the sarcasm transferred correctly in text form x
I didn't mind it. At least it had the French touch with the accordian in there. IIRC, they were later to screw up the original theme even more, so small mercies, I think.
I've never heard of that show. Although I live in England I never watch English T.V. shows. They are just simply too dreadful. I do like two shows from your country though. A very old show called SEEING THINGS and TRAILER PARK BOYS.
Chiggs58th: The scenery in this series was beautiful. One of the main reasons i watched it occasionally. As i recall "Shoestring" w/ Trevor Eve sort of competed with this series although 'The Sweeney' & 'Minder 'were at the top.
I remember that Bergerac himself was a recovering alcoholic and even though I never missed a show I can't remember a single thing about it. I remember liking the old geezer, he was like a half gangster or something wasn't he? Yes the sceanery was a big attraction too
He was a divorced recovering alcoholic who had been suspended from the force after a drink related accident at work. When he comes back he is put into a fictional team dealing with crimes caused by non residents. The old Geezer was his father in law, a wealthy man from Yorkshire who had a dodgy past and somehow through a money making scheme would end up involved in nearly every story somehow. Bergeracs ex wife and daugher vanish by series 6, but he has several failed relationships
Brings back memories that. I loved that show and have the first 5 series on DVD. My wife and I even spent our honeymoon out in the channel islands (sad eh)! Great show and even better place to spend a holiday.
Another great theme to bring back those memories.... remember watching this at my Grandama's house on a Saturday night as a young child..... good old days!!! thanks for posting
begerac was great, charlie hungerford was a good character, john nettles has made a career out of solving murders, unfortunate to have moved from jersey to midsomer, where the crime rate is out of control
All I'm going to say about Midsomer is that if there were that many murders there I'd bloody well move. Good show like Bergerac though don't you think?
do you live in jersey? i do, and it's even less than that, apart from the last person to be killed in jersey, she was killed by a foreigner as well and before that it has been like 30 years or even more that something has happened. to have a murder in jersey is extremely extremely rare.
Agreed - the start and end title theme tune from the earlier series all had the twangy guitar as well as that French accordian - which added that extra 'exoticness' and placed the show in Jersey. Shame about the later revamp.
It's a lot better but the later theme, which was re-done twice, is good and fits the time. Suits the series as it was going through a few changes. I think it's great to have more than one version of the theme.
listen bergerac push of mate,my names bodie and this heres my pal doyle,we solve crimes in our ford capris and escorts, the cream vinyl seats go quite well with my cream leather jacket and my brown flares

I heard of Bergerac when Jeremy Clarkson made up headlines on an episode of Top Gear. One was:
"Windsor Park resident, the Queen, has eloped with John Nettles, er, star of BERGERAC."

I swear to God; if you look up the word "wooden" in an illustrated dictionary you'll find a picture of John Nettles beside it.

The reality is much different however.
On average 1 person gets murdered in Jersey about
every 10 years and crime is low so this bears little resemblance to the reality of living here.
