Is 40 stitches about average for a mitten? I'm starting to purl knit, but it seems huge. Mind you, I am using bigger needles and it seems like thicker yarn too... Suggestions?
@lmdr25 It will depend on the yarn and needles you are using. Kelley is using worsted weight yarn which is about 4.5 stitches per inch. If you multiply the sts/inch with the # of sts cast on, you get the circumference (4.5*40=about 8.5" around). If your yarn & needles are bigger, you will need less stitches and you can take the circumference and multiply by your sts/inch to get your cast on #. Example: if your sts/inch is 3.5 then multiply 8.5 (hand circumference) by 3.5 = 29.97, so 30 stitches
Holy smokes when she starts pulling cables and switching needles back and forth it's impossible to follow. I hope the magic loop tutorial is A LOT clearer because all I've got on my needles is a half knit circle and no clue how to continue. Frustrating.
@Sheilaann1 Watching the tutorial on just magic loop alone is a good way to go, it focuses only on that technique. I would even just practice casting on and knitting a few practice rows before starting your mitts.
@Sheilaann1 You just have to remember to keep half of the stitches close to one needle, and the other half close to the other needle. Then when you finish knitting half, you have change the needle you were working with and start on the other half.
@xXxflash Kelley is knitting the mittens using the "magic loop" method of knitting. You can search our Knit Picks channel for that phrase and you will be able to watch an entire tutorial on that method of knitting in the round. I think that will help clear things up for you regarding which cable to pull in order to rearrange your stitches.
I can't wait to try the co on the circular needles. But for future videos could you please remove the knitting pieces in the background because the camera was focusing on those and not the knitting and it was a bit blurry. But overall it was still extremely helpful thank you!
@cookiemonster11221 You don't have to do ribbing, but it will help your mittens to stay elastic and close to your arm/wrist as knitted ribbing pulls in on itself.
Maybe in the future don't place decorative knitted items on the table. The camera is focusing on those and the actually knitting is all blurry.

nice easy way of explaining process but camera needs to pan out now and again to see how it looks from bigger angle.

Thank you, I've always avoided mitts because I'm nervous about double point ndles. Now my kids will get some homemade mitts!

I feel rather stupid. Even though the video makes it so simple and easy I still can't for the life of me figure out how to make it.
