@mechanicojoe sorry man but no, the blade does nothing of the sort. Yes the flywheel is aluminum, no, it is NOT light, and yes the crank is plenty strong enough all by itself. they're HUGE. Anyway, if I put an aluminum flywheel in my car, does that mean it needs a blade too?

@sbartasek Mechanicjoe is right. When one of these engines are not used on a pushmower they have a cast Iron flywheel. Go ahead and take the blade off your mower and start it up, have fun wit the broken hand they like to kickback with no blade. And on the aluminum flywheel on the car, the typical 4 cylinder (I am guessing since you said car and aluminum flywheel) fires every 180 degrees of rotation, This lawnmower fires every 720 degrees.

@sbartasek Maybe you're right, but I've never noticed a serious issue? My Cub cadet cc-3075 trimmer kicks back worse than ANYTHING I've ever started with no blade attached. But I do have to say that it's a powerful engine for it's size and takes a beating. Use mine on a modified troy bilt cultivator with a cinder block tied on and a rope to my belt to till 6 inches into clay. Wide open for hours in 95 degree weather and not a hiccup! (transmission gets HOT though!)
