@tillyandthepoo That's Fender's Ballroom in Long Beach, California. That place and The Marina Palace were the places to be in the 70's and 80's. I was there that night a LONG time ago.
Great vid. This is why youtube is such a great thing...rare stuff that would never have seen the light of day.
No Doubt singing about chaotic London schools in the 70's seems odd to me. But fair play to them, they do love their Madness. I've read Gwen cried for a week when she heard Suggsy was married ;)
British Ska was pretty big here in San Diego and especially in LA. I was a "RUDY" from jr. high through high school (80-86). Anybody that was into 2 Tone followed the Specials, Bad Manners, Madness, the Selecter, the English Beat, the Bodysnatchers, etc. who all hailed from England. Local bands like Fishbone and the Untouchables were also popular (pre-No Doubt). LONG LIVE SKA.
They were big in the US in the early 80s. Our House and to a lesser degree It Must Be Love were hit singles in the US. No Doubt was on the leading edge of the ska revival in the late 80s early 90s. Mainly because Gwens brother was into Madness.
Okay correction : Tony wasn't even in the band at this point. He was watching the show, and then tried out a little while later....before Spence's suicide, though.
exactly he wasnt checking gwen at this point tho coz he was scared eric would mind. Btw does anyone else find it wierd how there covering a Madness song, i didnt even think they were big outside england

WOW, footage with john spence! he really does have stage presence and nows how to work the crowd. The audience are manic!
It's ashame tho that he killed himself...he had alot going for him and was so young and talented. He must of had alot probelms to deal with...
I think no doubt would have evolved into a very different band if he was still in it tho.
RIP john
