  • Well you got me thinking enough to look it up!! Actually, stigmata is the plural of stigma:

    "an identifying mark or characteristic"

    One stigma of breast augmentation can be seeing the implant come off of the chest wall abruptly. Another stigma can be the appearance of a shelf under the clavicle. Another can be convexity in the lateral upper part of the chest wall. I work very hard to avoid these stigmata of breast implants by careful preoperative planning and meticulous operative technique.

  • That is an excellent question. While there are no guarantees in medicine, it is likely that someone with subglandular implants can still breast feed. When implants are placed, there is a small risk that the ducts to the nipple are divided and this can create problems with breast feeding. This situation, however, occurs in the minority of patients. More frequently, breast feeding is not thought to be affected by breast implants. -Dr. L
