In all seriousness, what story really is there to SF? I mean for crap's sake, Ryu's story since Day 1 was "I just want to find a fighter worth fighting...". A story so generic that it stands on its own. But that just goes to show you how much anyone should pay attention to a storyline for a fighting game.

Except Guilty Gear's, because you couldn't write that story if you smoked the best weed/crack in the world.

First, the storyline of Street Fighter is about Ryu who wants to become the best fighter is learning that he cannot just be the best through physical training.

Second, lots of fighting games have story like Fatal Fury, Tekken, King of Fighters and (as always) Soul Calibar.

Third, rock music can make someone make a story as good as Guilty Gear. Weed only makes you make some of the most funniest jokes that are as funny as all the best comedians combine.

You just summed his story up in half a statement. I don't know about you, but that's not exactly a super-grand story in my book.

As far as fighters having stories; they're there if you want them. They don't add or take away from the gameplay itself. Sure, you know the character's motivations, but does it make that character that much higher in the tiers?

And that Guilty Gear jab was me poking fun at some of the story's side-details. Dizzy's a stacked 3-year old Gear, Bridget's a dude, etc.

Ryu was trained in the ways of his martial arts since his childhood, Zangief is a Soviet born wrestler fighting for his homeland, Chun-Li and Guile wants revenge on M. Bison by winning the tornament and face him theirselfs. Pretty much story does effect the tiers (like thats important) of the characters.

And I already know thats a joke, I was just throwing it back at you just to be a conter joker.

Yeah, I don't just play fighting games for the gameplay. Besides, the story only makes the gameplay a little more interesting.

Tiers aren't really a "system", per se. They're more of a chart of fan speculation as to who's better than who based on lots and lots of post-release player testing to see what moves out-prioritize others, have higher risk-reward payouts, etc.

I honestly haven't met a single person (prior to you, anyway) that has chosen to play one fighting game over another simply because of a better storyline. Bottom line, they're called fighting GAMES; not fighting stories.

I never said anything about you liking fighters strictly for their story. What I was trying to get at is that it seemed to me as though you were over-emphasizing the importance a sense of story has to a fighting game. To me, stories are nothing more than the catalyst to be able to bring new gameplay quirks to the game in the form of sequels.

Sorry to sound like I'm only here to disagree with you (which it really seems like I'm doing, unfortunately), but I disagree with you.

Fighting game AI is a relatively pointless aspect to judge a game on. It's like saying you like eating hamburgers for the ketchup. No point.

Backgrounds and music are important design aspects, but these two things along a fighting game does not make.

Balanced characters and an intuitive fighting system improve gameplay. Not much else does, in my opinion.
