  • the change in sound and the drums make the intro sound realy jazzy, bill was very much into experimentation with jazz so i guess i wouldent take much to tweek it.

  • #69 greatest guitarist of all time lol'd @ 69 hurr durr

  • Close to the Edge - a very complex piece of music

  • He is one of the few guitarists that can get away with playing that clean. It's refreshing to hear someone play without the safety net of distortion. He is a killer of a player. I could not imagine Neil Young playing this clean, he sounds horible playing distorted. If he ever did this it would be a disaster.

  • thank you for posting this video

    just love steve

    watchin him play ...wonder full

i appreciate it all... so very much

its good when he looks as if he s having fun !

you are (a) lucky, son !!

best wishes to you and yours !

    again, many thanks

  • Definitly hear the Wes Montgomery influence, its always a treat to hear Steve play, I cant wait to see him this summer...tix to #3 shows!

  • @prry45 Just before I read your comment, I was thinking exactly the same thing. You can Wes' influence on Steve, and I am ahuge fan of both!

  • Seconded. When are they coming to Midlands again? I wanna come see them.

  • Haha, this version is definitely a departure from the loud aggressive sound of the album version, still very well done though!

  • Again thank you for sharing this video/ music with the rest of us, agree on all counts about Steve, cant stop watching him play, he is brillant!

  • when i was very young - late 70s alot of the bog standard rock marshall-blues-scale-players sounded awful to me. SH was one of a few i could listen to with any enthusiasm. his tone and scales were fab. but he seemed to be showing off a bit playing fast instead of sticking to arpeggios/chords in places. 'yes' were very generous letting him dominate it seemed. however he is without question rock's king of the unaccompanied solo.

  • Mr. Howe, to me, is the greatest guitarist on the planet. I always had a love/hate thing with him: Loved what I was hearing-but hated the fact that he was so damm good I would never come close as a guitarist. Other great players you can kind of figure out where they're coming from--but not Howe--where he came up with this stuff heaven knows!

  • to me,,the best guitarist ever is steve.. he's not a trickster like some who have better following..but he's techincally good AND interesting..

  • he's not an electric guitar trickster, but he can outplay any guitarist fair and square, he dominates all possible genres in guitar, plus he's a natural talent

  • my point..

  • This music has a really great vibe to it. These Yes tunes really lend themselves to Jazz very well. This is a trio people...they are playing jazz not prog rock...and it's good!

  • Most perceptive.

  • Yeah, you know according to Mr. Bill Bruford, Steve is really into Wes Montgomery's guitar works and Wes was great. If you listen to Wes and then Steve Howe you can hear a bit of the influence in some of Steve's riffs. Not so much in this clip, but The Yes Album may be a good example or perhaps in the song Mind Drive and others of course.

  • Interesting, but I think it would better with a bass player and piano instead of organ.

  • lousy keyboards!

  • Well that's his son Dylan playing the drums, but I dont reconize the keys guy. I was expecting Virgil.

  • i don't get how Dylan could have started as a punk drummer having such a talented father! anyways, he's very talented too, glad to hear their trio stuff

  • How could they be tagged as progressive rock, when so much of their work has such a jazz accent.

    Steve Howe, F T W

  • Well that's because part of the prog rock lable is jazz as well as many other genre's all mixed up.

  • Hes a monster musician n I love it.

  • I saw Steve perform in Milwaukee a year or two ago - he was incredible and just such a pleasure.

  • as always this guy is insaaaaaane!!!!

  • this trio aproach made it sound a lot more jazzy. very gooooooood!

(but I miss Squire a LOT. his sound is so perfect.)

  • Steve Howe-still with his Gibson shredding, incredible.

  • Cool version!

  • Yes indeed Dylan Howe can play!!!

  • jaw dropping organ... thank you

  • Very cool! Wish they'd played more of the song though.

  • Bravo! Great interpretation.

  • Enorme

  • Hey, Dylan, how many of the Yes songs can you play? Throughout the years I have often thought that Yes songs were so intriquet it kept musicians (pick up bands) from activating any to their repitoir...

  • Nice Howe!

  • what a cool interpretation- wonder if there is any onstage competition between father and son. light-hearted and good humoured, i would hope! :)

  • classy.

  • wonderful..

  • Come to Seattle and I'll play bass for you!! Sounds great.

  • This is one of the coolest songs ever. Period. To This day nothing sounds like Yes (except people playing Yes with steve hehe)

  • One of the coolest songs ever. PERIOD. Exactly how I look at this extraordinary song.

  • The Boofin is spot on. When Alan White joined it forced Yes to rock more and when Moraz joined it gave the band it's most radical live sound. Even when Wakeman returned the sound slowly became more "adult". A shame. With Jon now probably retiring, watch Yes live at Queens Park, particularly part two, bad sound or not, Yes were never so powerful. Want old school prog power today? See King Crimson.

  • I saw them do this in Kendal last night -- fantastic performance. They also make a great job of Siberian Khatru. The Hammond player is Ross Stanley, by the way.

  • Howe in the world did they do that? Had me smiling and remembering the first time I heard close to the edge. fine thing to see and hear before I lay down for the night. well done gentlemen, thank you :)

  • Neat!

    Never saw the trio.

    Very cool jazz translation!

  • who is on the keyboards?

  • Steve you are amazing and your son is a master in the drums

  • If I had a criticism of Howe (and Yes) these days, it would be in the area of sound. I loved his (their) raw Yessongs sound but for the last 10 years or more his live sound has been devoid of any valve amp character and there is no aggression to the sound. Yes music requires a raw aggression. Especially as he ages and his physical aggression subsides, he should follow Neil Young and maintain an edge to his sound. Play thru a cranked 20 watt amp. Simple.

    Love, Steve

  • @theboofin spot on:-)

  • @theboofin It is just a different vibe, at least in this video, but I do agree about the boutique sound...

  • @TonyMarmottaX Yeah, Tony I realise this is more jazzy and probably not the best place for my comment. Even Squires sound is too clean these days. Hell, the world is too clean!

  • @TonyMarmottaX @TonyMarmottaX Yeah, Tony I realise this is more jazzy and probably not the best place for my comment. Even Squires sound is too clean these days. Hell, the world is too clean!

  • @theboofin or......he could play with the sound *he* likes...

  • @theboofin Interesting comment. But you can't really expect an artist to be like he was when he first started out. The Yessongs album is in a league of it's own and is one of my favorites. I don't go to a Yes show now expecting to see "Yessongs". Howe can't just "plug into an amp" and crank it up. A concert is a big production. Also, music back then was less (technologically) complicated, so that's why you got that great raw sound.

  • The live version on YESSONGS is AWESOME!!!!!!

  • I own the DVD, It is great.

  • this makes me want to listen to....wait for it... close to the edge

  • Thanks for the post! Will the Steve Howe Trio be performing in the States in 2008?

    thanks

  • No, but Yes is touring in 2008 for their 40th anniversary tour, with Howe

  • thats the way the rums are supposed to sound ..man its about time...I think they lost something over the years( YES) doing bigger and bigger stuff

  • SUPERB! DRUMMER RULES!!!

  • Great to see a Yes man unafraid to Finally take the music and break it out of the original template. If only Yes as a group wasn't so hide-bound by the dogma and orthodoxy of their original vision. How many times can I hear Roundabout like the last 300 times. Please put a twist to it.

  • Intelligent comments on Youtube are rare - this is one of them.

  • I agree - But we will see Yes again - at full power. Steve is getting old. It would be nice to see him and Trevor on the same stage again. Peace

  • Steve is the best guitarrist on the world.

    STEVE

  • Wow that was amazing. Yes, I was there in 76 also - and have been ever since. This is actually a pretty rare interpretation of the piece - we're normally not treated to something so outside - but I loved it even if short (I love the DVD too). Thanks for posting the vid Dylan! Could you pass along a request for The Remembering in 2008 to dear ol' dad, please?

  • Bitonality and polyrythm...

  • Steve Howe is bald!

    Yes!

  • steve and i get our hair cut at the same barber!however he plays guitar far better than i

  • I always enjoyed when he takes the time to LOOK at the audience? ALOT? He is still my BEST!! You really Hooked us up! Thanks so much for this SPECIAL share!!

  • the drummer is Dylan Howe, his son!! Currently on tour with the Blockheads (also amazing :)

  • Wow! A MUST for Steve Howe fans!

Who the heck is the drummer? I didn't know they still had drummers like that!

  • Wonderful to see how this translates to another orchestration, although mot of the original parts are intact.

  • man u dont know crap u probly like fall out boy and stuff loser

  • It's called 'fusion'

Ever stop to think that not everybody likes jazz just because it is hard to play?

  • It's a masterpiece from 1972 and the first time I have seen Steve Howe that clearly as he plays it. Excellent video. Close to the Edge is still the pinnacle for YES in my opinion.

  • I saw Yes in 1976 and stood in front of the stage right in front of Steve. Yes was amazing to watch, but watching Steve play that close was an experience I'll never forget. ...And he was standing the whole concert!

  • one of the greatest guitarist ever !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • BRAVO!! I really enjoyed it!!

Felt to me like a jazzy sort of texture in there... Really nice job!!

  • Really enjoyed this version.

  • Far Out! Close To the Edge is 1 of my all time fave LPs, & to check out "The Solid Time of Change" with the Master blasting it out is awesome. I was elated when Yes whipped out"Ritual" on tour again some years back. I hadn't seen them play that since 76 in chicago. There will always be Yessongs in the air & ears somewhere-Way too much inventive music to be forgotten-Oh yeah, thanks for relaying that clip, PEace!!

  • treatments are seen everywhere

  • Listening this, I can't help thingking what Yes in their early 70's form could have done with today's equipment and gadgets.

  • Ok, it's been some time, but didn't Steve Howe "invent" or whatever, the talkie or something like that for guitars??? Sorry, can't speak guitar... but, I do recall something he came up with, just not what. :/

  • this isnt yes, so its not gonna be like yes

  • Not only does howe try and do something new with the tune , his playing is better than on a lot of later seventies early eighties yes. in my estimation!

  • Cringeworthy? Sorry, but this is great stuff. Maybe the SOUND isn't so hot (hand held cams are like that) but it's gutsy to take a piece like CTTE and give it such a different treatment. I would LOVE to see this trio in person. Howe has been a personal favorite for over 35 years. Thanks to Dylan for this clip!

  • wow, really unexpected that way! cute:)

  • rubbish? What is wrong with your ears?

  • I see your point, but this isn't too cringeworthy for words! The trouble I find is it doesn't go anywhere, a bit like a chased snog behind the bikeshed, it leaves you wanting more but in the worst possible way!

  • You as a critic need to be more constructive and less retarded.

  • what a master guitar player steve is...ctte is the high end of progressive rock.

  • Favorite Yes song!

  • Now this is wonderful - not that you guys don't already know that!!!!!!!!!!!! CTTE has much meaning and significance personally.

Steve - what a thrill to be playing with your sons.

    Thanks,

    Mark from Toronto

  • dang! this is insane! Steve just keeps getting better with age.

  • cool .. finally steve howe moves on i got a little tired of the obligato reunion stuff that couldnt stand in the shadow of their former live. now this get me going great! thanks for posting DH

  • If Bruford would've had it his way in 1972, this is how CttE would've came out. :-P Very superb!!

  • Thanks Dylan loved the show in Morecambe.

  • Pretty avant-garde!

  • I 2nd that motion atomsmasher !

  • This is extremely cool...!
