All you people complaining about the glamorization of folk dances need to travel in time back to the 1930s, 'cause that's when the Egyptian dances were adapted for the stage. Personally, when I go to a theater or nightclub, I want to see a highly trained star performer like Ms. Nour. If I want to see farmers or sailors dancing, covered chin to toe, I'll go to a village wedding.
I think she's great, high energy, big smile and engaging. I don't know 100% certain but I was taught that Saidi is a folk dance from Upper Egypt, a dance of the people from that region...I was taught it was supposed to be dance in a lively and "folky" way...as if you were celebrating with your neighbors in your own neighborhood streets, not dancing like a beautiful princess. Is this true? I see arguments about her not being graceful and I want to know what's the real deal? LOL
I love the music in the first part. I don't like her costume, though. I wish she'd cover her chest a bit more... I spent the whole video being concerned about seeing more than what I payed to see!
I think she is great! Saidi is supposed to be a strong, fun, joyful party dance! She is totally engaging the crowd and having a blast. She is being sexy, but that is part of the energy of saidi.
@AlaudaBellydance - Saidi is a male oriented dance that originated from Taktib - a form of martial arts. How is Saidi supposed to be sexy? It's powerful, masculine energy.
@glamournurse - Powerful, masculine energy, especially when performed by a strong woman - IS sexy! She is sensual, strong, beautiful, fun and totally engaging the energy. A man performing a taktib OR debke or any other dance can be sexy too.
Maybe you have a different definition of sexy than I do...I don't mean sexy like "watching this makes me horny". That is porn.
@AlaudaBellydance I think we're just misunderstanding each other here. All I meant is Saidi is masculine and that is what I would consider the definition of it to be. I wouldn't define it's original energy as sexy. Where as I agree with you in that it IS a masculine dance that CAN be considered sexy because of it's masculine energy. I thought you were saying that it was supposed to be sexy and not masculine, which was why I commented that.
i think you're completely right. i think thats a big problem of many dancers, they try to be so OVER-sexy and feel the need to show their "talent", whatever it takes.
there's two sides to the thing> yes, flirting makes it interesting, but it should be kept to a nice level. More eye-contact and less obvious moves. Most professional and well known dancers made it without cheap tricks.
belly dance is a naturally sensual dance no matter what anyone else says, so it is the mans (or womans) fault for adding any negative sexual connotation to it.
I agree and I hate bellydancers who do this because then ignorant people come to the conlusion that bellydancer are lap dancers or something like this, which in reality they're not.
@aishagamila I agree with you. I think its okay to do it NEAR a man, but not to a man or directly in front of him. I've seen bellydancers who are "professionals" actually do shoulder shimmies on a mans head. It is disgusting. So thank you for posting your opinion because I wish more dancers would follow it.
YOu need to keep in mind that Raks Assaya - dancing with a cane - is a folk dance. It's moves by its very nature will be more strong, muscular, and earthy than those of a classic cabaret Oriental piece. She is certainly graceful in the drum solo, while, once again, the drum solo requires strength. She moves beautifully and seems to be a real crowd pleaser. I wouldn't chose to balance on my chest, but that is just personal choice - it demonstrates balance and an isolation so why not?
I agree that balancing a cane on ones chest can allow one to demonstrate isolations. She performed two different moves while balancing the cane on her chest, a chest circle - ok, and chest lifts. Let me explain further - Done facing the audience would have been innocent enough but facing a man and looking directly at him while doing the move - ugh! Again, I think she's a good dancer.
That move was quite common up till about 10 years ago. Why do you find it disgraceful?
You must admit, She is a Fantastic Dancer, And she has managed to get it all. She speaks Arabic is married to a Syrian has children, the little Russian Girl has taken Cairo by Storm Just listen to the public!. I'm sure nothing came easy. Good Luck & God Bless her.
I find it disgraceful because she did it in front of two different men and it looked like a cheap, tasteless trick. She's a good dancer but that move just disgusts me no matter who the dancer is.
I find it strange that a woman would find this offencive & I personaly think that you have a problem with your own sexualty The further comment you posted could have been penned by a Relidious Zelot Or Taliban.
7Vails - You're an ass and you don't know shit about me. Learn how to spell stupid. I'm not a religious zealot or a member of the Taliban. Your posts show your stupidity. This has nothing to do with my sexuality and I don't know why you decided to bring up something in which you simply do not know anything about. So go beat off somewhere else, you ridiculous fool!
this is great...i was always wanting to dance to this but i know the palestinians in my regular club would be looking at me WTF if i dare BD to a dabke song (even tho this is leb).
as far as doing saidi to it, its a great choice...the leader in the dabke line often uses a cane or stick.
The Debka is the Lebanies National Dance. In a More peaceful Lebanon their used to be a Festaval Every year In The Ruins of The ancient Temple in the City of BalBak, It was Dedicated to Lebanies Folk Song & Dance I frequantly watched Dabki their.
