the day has come. this was meant to be my mourning song for my sweet cat Blu. She went just an hour ago and I dedicate this to her, who was such a special wonder. I thank her, with all my love*
YEP! I am going to be FIFTY FIVE - BEEN THERE - DONE THAT - THERE is no REASON for BLUE.... Joni is so RIGHT; Whay are we all BLUE??? I will "State the Obvious" (and I am NOT GAY) MEN - DO NOT GET IT.. This song was with me when I moved from Hawait to Maine in my late teens. It made me SAD - and - "Disconnected" at 17 - all alone - from "Bikini's at the MALL" to "Turtlenecks" at the EAST COAST. And Men are ALL the same, no matter... They have ALOT within THEM to GIVE. LOVE - Kathleen
Ever since I was a young girl I have listened to this too many times to even comprehend. Now pulled it up and it all came true for me and this is the first song of hers that I ever heard and since then have become one of her biggest fans. That voice...there is no other like it.
Beyond entrancing and the ultimate in sentiment and fragility. "Hey Blue......there is a song for you" - wow, this is truly the next best album next to "Court and Spark".
Well...each to their own I suppose but Musicpriestess ....I wonder what you are using for ears. Joni Mitchell was an absolute original, a huge talent (all these songs are her songs, composed by her, played by her and based on her own life). The Hoffman version is junk in comparison (her 'Hey Jude' cover is even worse!). An 'also ran' in the world of music, soon to be forgotten (unlike Joni who is one of the immortals!). No offence intended...but I find such statements hard to comprehend!!
@Musicpriestess I must be being really dumb or something...but I can't find the Hoffman version on Youtube..and I'm keen to hear it as I would genuinely like to hear a version someone else reckons is better than Joni's. There are a few plinky plonky amateur things by someone of that name...but you must be referring to someone I just can't find...
In fact I would go as far as to say...it doesn't seem to exist..
@next285 ....yes exactly!!! it takes me somewhere else....and i fell in love with this song through my favorite rapper go figure....it was sampled and that song just stuck in my head and i had to find it. Joni touched me decades after this song was released. Thanks Joni
This song is about drugs, but "Cold Blue Steel" is about heroin addiction. Joni
writes and plays songs that are pertinent in her life....probably the best songwriter and female performer we have seen yet. These songs from the 60s and 70s appeal to so many people today which is evidence her talents are extraordinary
Her dedication to giving her fans her soul, almost lead to a nervous breakdown, during the writing of the songs on this album.I wonder how many writers share that dedication to their art...???
en 1980 me cayó este album y esta canción en particular me gusto..la había olvidado por completo hasta que la vi en este canal...no solo de rock vive el hombre sino tambien de toda cancion que sale de buenos artistas...........
Thanks for this real track. Joni is an artist that will be know for centuries. I feel she wrote the song to her daughter during birth, but hey, I don't know.

I have loved this whole Blue album since I was 18 years old, I am now 42. It is wonderful when you want to be alone or are feeling alone. It has got me through alot in life.
@bayviewbob Or maybe this song was simply just before my time? .. It was made in 1976 for christ sake.. Nice way of sounding ignorant calling someone else ignorant in the same sentence
@Buanand I've not heard that before. I heard this was written about the conclusion of the 60s, her reflection upon the dying Hippy movement ("Acid, booze and ass, needles, guns and grass, lots of laughs"), sort of an internal dialogue with her depression over the end of an era that had so much promise. Whichever way around, it's a beautiful song that's perfectly executed. Thank you Joni.
Brilliant song ...this and her song 'River' always reminds me of my youth ... non stop festivals and never going home for days on end ...living out of the back of my old 'mini clubman' and Joni on the cassette tape .!!! what more would you want eh ?
I've heard and sung this song to myself hundreds of times since I first heard it almost forty years ago, had many chills listening to it -- the song, the sentiments putting a period on the sentence of the sixties.
Unquestionably my favorite album of all time, and maybe the best of so many brilliant songs on that album.
"During this time, I perceived a lot of hate in my heart. I perceived my inability to love at that point. And it horrified me. 'Blue' is an honest album."--Joni Mitchell re: the Blue album

@Undadogg69 Same here. For some reason hearing this song for the first time shocked me. Like she was describing a part of my mind. This song STILL makes me pause years later.
