Are that drums Jinbao or simillar? Low cost drums, I mean. My drums are Jinbao, and I'm thinking about removing the covers and paint the wood directly, in a simillar way of yours.
i did learn a few things - to do and not to do.. but, u got my respect just for trying - i aint got the balls yet to even try.. i have a set of an old pearl, its good wood so i dnt wanna ruin it!
Great video! I refinished a drum kit that someone was throwing away. Almost the same kind you had with the black shell. Looks a lot better now. It's a good at home practice kit.
good video, i watched it 'cause it's funny. I Just painted my snare in quite the same way but with ways more steps. I'm thinking about refinish my entire drum kit, i used a spray to apply the lacque but it was not too good and it would be expensive for a hole kit. How hard is it to apply the clercoat with a brush? (i dont want brushmarks)
@MatrioskaCigany ive worked with just wood and clear coat in general alot and ive found if u do what he says dont go crazy with putting it on the brush you should be fine
awesome video man! I just got a '99 pearl export today from a guy and before I bought it, he told me he had recently refinished it. Well, long story short...it looks like shit. I'm going to sand it down and refinish it soon. I hope mine looks half as good as yours.
@wiseshanks I remember those kits. It seems from memory those shells are made of pressboard (MDF) rather than wood ply. MDF looks like shit with stain on it, but would be okay if properly painted; or better yet, 'wrapped'.
Where did you get your drum air vents from ? and what do the air vents actually do ? i mean can you just leave the hole there and it will sound the same? cheers man
I could be mistaken, but I believe the actual metal pieces in the air wholes are cosmetic. I doubt it'd change the sound if you were to skip replacing them, but I wouldn't for the reason of it just looking kind of strange in my opinion.
@JoesRedGuitar Cheers mate, fuckin great video btw, im doing mine in a dansih oil then buffering it in wax and its gonna look amazing - cheers for the help :)
you did a great job man. My Mapex Mars series is banana yellow, and the wrap is starting to warp. I have a dark cherry stain at my house and may use your video as inspiration
Good job. What you need to do is start with between 80 to 150 grit depending on the condition of the wood... then step it down to 100 and then 220. Make sure you use steel wool in between your finish for the best results. No disrespect but that why you have the brush drag. Also, buy a good brush (It matters) and dress your brush first by filling the Ferrule ... it will flow nicer

do you know the exact name of the air vents cuz I destroyed mine and the local Home Depot doesn't know what the hell it is. or could you direct me to a place where i can find some replacements?
I'm no expert either but I know the kind of repetitive pressure that'll be comin from inside that bass drum so I'd put somethin on the inside as well as on the outside of the holes.
Thanks for posting, you've made me consider refinishing my congas :)
ONE QUESTION! My drumset has those 2 holes to mount the mounted toms,I wanna cover them,How do I do that? Please help,And No,I like my drum set like it is,Its a Vex Wine purple-ish color,So I dont want to repaint it,Its wrapped not painted,How do I cover the holes on the bass,The holes for the mounted toms? Please answer and thanks :)
you may have to drill some holes put just get a small piece of steal and cut it to cover the holes this way you can make it whatever shape you want. you can even take it somewhere to get the name brand of your drums put on it and nobody will ever know. i have done this on several sets in the past and people have asked if i got a new kick because it ads so much to the set
So, the cool thing is, I'm doing the same thing right now to my old kit that's been sitting around for...3 years, 4 years? only I've re-sized all the toms, and put in re-rings, and re-edged the insides of them all so far, and and am now in the process of putting in filler, then filler sealer, then body filler, then off to paint, and then drilling new holes for the lugs and finishing the bearing edge, and then putting them all back together.
wat can i use so polish my cymbals but not mess up the logo? like any house hold product in particular or would i need to go out and buy one from guitar center?
I've never heard of any kind of polish damaging a cymbal, but I'm not sure. I own cymbal polish so i've never used other kinds, but I dont think there would be a problem.
@wcvj91608 before you think about using anything on your cymbals you need to have a listen and ask yourself "is this sound good" most products for cleaning metal are abrasive and even if they're not taking off the build up of stuff that gets on you cymbals will generally brighten the sound, this may not be what you want for certain cymbals as you may find overtones where you don't want em. Either way cleaning em too much wears em down faster.
@wcvj91608 Slice a few LIME fruits (the small green ones) in half. Use the sliced face to rub on your cymbals. This method worked on mine... way cheaper than cymbal polish. Hope that helps.
Hey im redoing mine and have gotten as far as filling in the holes and seems and all the imperfections. the first one i used a bit much of the wood putty but then again it was 5 am when i did that. now if anyone needs some advice take it from here. use a putty knife you can get one from a hardware store for about 5 bucks and you will always have it. but you can scrape away all the excess putty that is left.
i did mine a little while ago. i removed the wrap and just recovered them using only duct tape. i didn't feel the need to sand or anything, because the adhesive worked great by itself. i used a knife to cut all the holes for the hardware (time consuming) and put it all back on; it looks badass now!
those rivet-style air vents are a bitch to remove. i wasn't going to replace them, though
yeah man i ended up using regular paint for wood. that works too... make sure you sand the shit out of it!!!! I didn't do a great job with saning my drums so it left little wood bumps because i did a bad job at sanding.
i spray painted my drums and hardware , it came out pretty goood . if you take the wrap off i would sand it shitloads before painting , or you could spray over the wrap if you cant be bothered sanding :) i would use primers frist aswel .
I started staining today. Just read on a site that laquer on the inside will positively change the sound of your drums, by closing the microscopic pores and blah blah blah. Im going to try it, did you do anything to the inside of these?

I don't remember what the name of the stain i used is. I went to home depot and picked an orange color that i liked in the custom water based stains. It may have been called tangerine, but i dont know for certain.
alright so i have a homedepot about 10 minutes from my house. so like if my wood grain is already like a orange base but i want it like yours and stuff..... .any ideas?
i'm not really sure man... i guess if the wood of your drums is already orangeish, then maybe go with a lighter orange.... i would imagine that putting orange on top of orange would make a verhy very orange color... but maybe thats what you want.i am hardly an expert in this department heh
Sorry buddy, i have no clue which wood filler i used. I went to home depot and they just had some like tube that kinda looked like a tube of tooth paste. It was so long ago i dont really remember.
um, when it dried i'd compare the consistency to how you might expect dried mud would be... almost brittle, but once you sand it down, it fills the cracks in quite nicely and accepted the stain just fine.
Hmm, i did this kit nearly a year ago, so i don't recall the name of the color. It's a water based stain that i got from home depot, and it's one of their custom colors. I would imagine if you went to home depot you could find it, they've only got a handful of different oranges.
WOAH! Great freaking job Braddah!!! I've been back on forth about doing this with my set cause I am dead bored with that plain red wrap. But I really think I'm gonna go threw with it after seeing your results! Thanks for the inspiration Braddah!
we shall see what happens... im currently 1300 miles away, have been for about 6 months, and will be for 2 more. When i finally do get home, it will have been 8 months since i last even saw drums, so i'm gonna be pretty sucky, but once i get bakc into the swing of things, i'd say its a definite possibility.
i know it's lacquer but i can't remember what the brand is.... it's what ever brand that home depot had the most of.... if i heard it i would recognize it, but i'm currently in MS which is not where my can of clear coat is, so i can't check. I wanna say it's something like ... ok i have no idea... heh sorry
well for me anyways, i have my drums in my basement all the time for recording too, and since they are never out for people to see, i figured, what do i have to lose? i mean, the important thing about studio drums isn't how they look at all, but how they sound.... but don't do anything you're not comfortable doing.
i really really don't think you could effect the sound of the drums unless you sanded a lot from the inside and changed the shape of it, but that would be hard to do. As far as visually, of course you would effect that part! thats the whole point!
Looking to do this over summer..... just wondering what grain sandpaper did you use becuase i heard its really hard to remove the glue from the shell???
i'm pretty sure it depends which kind you get. There are a few different brands and different kinds of clear. I have a family friend who is a crazy wood working dude, and he said the kind i used is one that doesn't turn yellow, though he recognized that some kinds do.
thanks for the video, im going to be doing the same thing to my set soon, and your right, theres not alot of videos to showcase the process.
Gotta ask, whered you buy your stain and clearcoat?
(p.s. you look like Shia LaBuff, and sound like the actor in the movie Dahmer. Also, you seen like a guy id hang out with, and if meeting someone over youtube werent so creepy and gay, id buy you a beer.)

good video but if you take off the original wrap the sound will be worst ... you need 2 put the new wrap over the old one:)

Hmmm. That's not true at all. Wraps are for cosmetic and protective purposes. It doesnt effect the sound whatsoever.

home depot clear turns yellow over time..

i'm pretty sure it depends which kind you get. There are a few different brands and different kinds of clear. I have a family friend who is a crazy wood working dude, and he said the kind i used is one that doesn't turn yellow, though he recognized that some kinds do.

only water base turns yellow. I started this project a few monts back. Use a laquar clear and a oil base stain

my wood grain goes with the roundness, not up and down =/
this is taking along time for me. but its looking amazing!

well so long as it looks nice, i don't see that making it anymore difficult. you should definitely post a video of your kit when it's drum

thanks for the video, im going to be doing the same thing to my set soon, and your right, theres not alot of videos to showcase the process.
Gotta ask, whered you buy your stain and clearcoat?
(p.s. you look like Shia LaBuff, and sound like the actor in the movie Dahmer. Also, you seen like a guy id hang out with, and if meeting someone over youtube werent so creepy and gay, id buy you a beer.)

i got both from home depot. The stain is one of their custom orange colors.
