Thanks man...Only thing is I've checked all my plugins and Waves REQ has the best sounding fader...so now you are saying I should check the Free G. OK sometimes soon. take care. Go look me up on facebook you can hear my work from 1982 and up
here is a solution for you all: just use trim plugin before the compressor to reduce the gain. you can get it for free from the good people at Sonaksis. it's call Free-G.
I have to tell you, I use my ears to test how things sound...After 30 years of making records, I trust what I hear more then any "nulling tests"...It reminds me how amazing the CD specs sheet looked in 1981 and how CDs actually sounded...so, go figure...digital audio has two sides to it. What they tell about it and what you know about it by using it...keep listening. Good luck. YV
I tried this trick for myself and couldn't hear a difference. I tried running 2 instances of the compressor in parallel, one with the input gain set using the compressor and another set using Q3. One of these was phase inverted.
With the input at -24dB, they nulled completely (-Inf).
At +12 there was a 20dB difference. Howeve, the signals were nulled by setting the output of the Q3 to +11.7
Thnx for the tip Yoram, I read on gearslutz that its good to set up gain as you would in analog domain also in digital mixing, not so hot, I quote: "To have the same amount of "headroom" as we do on the SSL we must create a reference of 0VU or 1.23 volts at -20 from 0DBFS or the top of the Digital scale."
I was gonna ask you for any tips regarding a plugin to do the gain reduction that won't color the sound at all or take up CPU but it just hit me.Blue Cat got a free gain plugin, yay!
My friend, what you are saying about digital being ones and zero is a myth you need to let go off...As Bob Ludwig once said "never turn your back on digital"...Digital processing will fool you if you don't keep an eye on it... Finally , if you can't hear the difference, you either haven't done the test right or you just got to keep on listening very closely...
What difference? I don't hear anything and to be honest I didn't expect to, maybe it works in the analog equipment but this is digital ones and zeros which does away with voltage voodoo.
I have a question. Do I need really a highend soundcard to get a good sound? I know a good card sounds better, but what is with a X-Fi soundcard from creative? Is it really a question of the soundcard? Or what I make out of it trough plugins or knowledge?
Thank you for taking time to share this tip, I have been using this technique for 3-4 years now. It just made sense to me to go about it this way. I've used the "FREE G"
plugin from Sonalksis to do just this, And if your level is too hot to begin with, the FREE G allows one to bring the level down before entering the next plugin in the chain. WELL DONE ! MAZALTOV !
this tip was not aimed at musicians, but rather, professional colleagues around the world, who use Protools and share knowledge to improve the sound quality of the digital systems we are forced to work with after so many years of analog bliss.... Those who find this explanation confusing should be happy to realize that they need to do more reading and beef up their professional knolwledge and audio jargon... .
@yvaudio Wasn't confusing to me. A simple trick you use. ... I just recently got the VComp, and found this video. Great sounding compressor (!), though I'm not a fan of the hiss you get when the analog feature is at 50%-100%.
Basically you are saying, "Don't use Input Gain reduction on Vcomp". There are different input gain knobs on different DAWs. In Nuendo, for instance, you don't need a plugin to reduce the gain before the signal enters the plugin. Unless of course, you have protools and you need a plugin for that simple function. Unfortunately, sir, I think your video is confusing for beginners.
What do you mean by "Insert another plug that has a level control on it to adjust the amount of level GOING INTO THE VCOMP" ?? coz at mine, i can only appLy or use a PLug one at a time.. so i need to either use a PLUG for gain Reduction first, then use the VCOMP.. or vise-versa..
great. now that your vcomp is set, leave the input level of the vcomp at zero, all you have to do is insert another plug that has a level control on it to adjust the amount of level GOING INTO THE VCOMP. until the comp shows gain reduction and it sounds right to you. bye
i aLready got a setting for the V-COMP,, but i am getting confused at the part where to Tweak the "INPUT" at the V-COMP,, u said, the "INPUT" at V-COMP must aLways be set at zero.. but before using the V-COMP, i must use another pLugin to give a Gain Reduction.. is that it?? Sorry i am just a newbie about Compression, i appreciate much your heLp..
with compressors in general, you first decide on the ratio, attack and release you want. you set that up and then you set the threshold to a level that will give you the desired gain reduction. so, set the vcomp to whatever you desire and then bring up the fader up on the plug that's before the vcomp until you get the gain reduction you want.... capish???
so,first, i wouLd have to use gain reduction in another plugin and set it to the GR of my taste, then use the v-comp where input level i set to zero? Input level at vcomp always at zero... is that it?
Hey guys, YV here. All there is to it is simply, do not use the input level knob on the Vcomp. leave it at 0. now to get the desired gain reduction use any plug with a level control to adjust the amount of the input level into the Vcomp until you get the right amount on GR to your taste...very simple. Glad you like the tip. Yoram Vazan.Firehouse mastering Studio. Tel Aviv.
heLLo,, i just want to cLarify,, so before using the V-COmpressor at vocals, i need first to appLy a pLug-in which can give a -14 db reduction to the vocaLs, then after that, i wiLL now use the V-COmP with the inPut LeveL set at 0..?? is that it? can i use the "Amplify / Fade process" at the Adobe audition do give a -14 db reduction? is it the same to the other pLug-ins?... another one, where does the output LeveL takes pLace, what's the use of it? is it for voLume GAIN? thanks in advance
I found that this compressor act like real analog compressor without look a-head if I'm not wrong,
so It has slow atack time and that cause slow gain reduction and you get an fx in the beggining of a track when beat start it's louder before gain reduction start, this is bad...didn't try if this is deppended by ratio
Hey labanx. You have to ask waves why...I read the manual and it was suggested in it, that in order to get the best sound out of the plug, you need to feed the plug's input with a signal no higher then -17 dbfs or so...now beeing that alot of the tracks that I mix are recorded way too hot, i decided to insert a level trimmer plug before the V comp to give it what it wants, - 17 dbfs...then i compared the 2 ways of operation ( with and w/o a trimmer) and voila...cheers Yoram Vazan
My pleasure dude/ what's going on in Paris? I hear a lot of big studios and rental companies are going out of business. Is that true? How can I find out about there gear sales???

After several tests with this concept I can confirm that both methods nulled completely. In other words .. I call SNAKE OIL :)
I would love to be proven wrong, but I must report that this, so far, does not work!
