@Tokiohotelgirl97 It's a beautiful dress. If people laugh at you, ignore them and smile. Sometimes I wear things that aren't "normal" and I've actually received a few compliments! (Not trying to sound like I'm boasting; I'm just saying people may love the look!) Go ahead and wear your Audrey-inspired dress. I'm sure it'll look lovely.
The haircut serves several plot purposes. First, it's the Princess doing something impetuous, just for herself, without consulting anyone or being told not to do it. Second, it's an explanation of how she can spend the day in public without being recognized (as the barber reminds us when he's finished). Third, it introduces the dance that night, where the climactic fight scene will take place.
And...it makes Audrey even cuter and more lovable to look at.
I've cut my hair from really long (almost to me butt) to really short(above shoulders) 3 times. One of those times, people asked if I was going to cry but after it's always was a happy feeling.
Almost like the previous commentor said, you feel light cause weight of the hair is gone (along with memories and feelings of the past). Sometimes you feel like a different person.
Though I end up growing it back because keep short hair styled is a hassle, well at least to me with fast growing hair.
I thought of this scene when I cut my long hair off a few weeks ago. I got it cut short like Audrey's and I truly felt as if the negative weight of my life had floated away as my hair was being chopped off! I felt so liberated and so happy! I love it and I am sure that any girl who got their hair cut short would feel great too!
Every woman who has had a great short haircut knows how truly liberating and joyous it can be. I chopped mine off at 19 and never looked back. All the while I was remembering this great scene!
It is hard to be a beauty once. What is amazing about Audrey is that she show her two faces in each of her movie, My Fair Lady, Sabrina and of course Roman Holiday. She started as a beauty (maybe not in fairly) and took it to a whole new level later. You are the best, Audrey.
For the purpose of the plot, Audrey (the famous princess) needs to be unrecognizable so she can have her holiday among the people. And this scene achieves that perfectly, without being forced or artificial. And the hairdresser character works perfectly too, in making her feel better about herself, and he even shows up later in the film too. And, of course, Audrey looks even more stunning after the haircut is finished.
no there was no threat to her being seen or recognized up to this point, long hair was the custom. Short hair just started in Europe, then in the United States and she wanted to look modern, so she had her hair cut.
And let's not forget Eddie Albert, a great actor and comedian. As they said about the movie, it possessed the charm of Hepburn, the wit of Albert, the panaches of Peck--all brough to the screen by that master, Wyler. It's almost more than we deserve.
A difficult decision that no man can even understand, much less make for you; but I've loved women with hair they could sit on and other with hair shorter than Audrey's. This is about as personal a decision you could ever make.
But why do another post and tell us what you decided to do?
Maybe this is a silly question, but do they actually cut the wig she is wearing? (I know that her hair was really short to begin with in real life). But it's such pretty hair - how do they do it?
I guess they did. I mean, I'm not much of a hairdresser myself, but I won't ever cut such big locks. Your hair will end up into such a nasty nest in a few days or so...
LOVELOVELOVE this movie, lovelovelove Audrey, and this scene really, truly gets me each and every single time. Audrey Hepburn will live in our hearts forever because of magical moments like this. Her smile is so breathtakingly beautiful, in my opinion. R.I.P. Audrey! Thank you so much for posting.
