i like both of them but i like how in the Iphone HDR shot you can see outside of the window better. thats just me i guess cause when i Do HDR i don't go for higher saturation i just go for all around visibility.
Its really not that much difference between that and the built in HDR.. Obviously if you use the built in HDR and apply more contrast, it will look the same. Even in your screenshot of the controls of the app, it showed that the contrast and many other things was adjusted. Its not the Pro HDR that makes it better, its just those adjustments.
WTH? The two pictures you're showing are not taken from the same place, and quite likely therefore not at the same time! In fact I don't think you're making a good case for the pro app at all, since Apple's own HDR capabilities show such great capture of the light and shadows coming in from the skylights, AND show the blue of the sky outside. What does the pro app show? None of that! Yes the interior details are more balanced, but it's a very flat and undramatic photograph. I'm not sold!
are there any plans to make a video HDR app, ive just got the ipod touch 4th gen (miles better than the samsung galaxy S or at least better than the one i had which turned into a completly useless media phone with android 2.2 that wouldnt connect to wifi, would constanly have a slow clock, and wouldnt connect to samsung kies on windows oh and battery life was still crap, ive now gone back to an lg ku990 which seams to work a lot better) though HDR pro is an awsome app thanks once again blunty.
yes; Pro HDR is hands down the BEST HDR app I've played with too; I love it! The built in HDR function on the iOS4 is a joke... makes the pictures look worse then standard...
by the way, I'm going to be calling it HDRRRRRRRRR from now on too, lol, thanks for that
Blunty, great review of the App. I have purchased it and you can TRULY take stunning photos. Could you do a review for the best panorama stitching app? Thanks from Alaska!!
@Blunty3000 You are ALMOST as awesome as KB, but that is an unfair comparison, seeing as he was born in the Temple of awesomeness!!! haha jk great review all together, keep up the great work : )
The test between iPhone 4's built in HDR and Pro HDR inside this hall is falsified, in that the pictures were not taken at the same place. With Pro HDR, you're at the first floor, while you're on the second floor with the iPhone 4. Please, make a comparison at the exact same spot with both HDR's; it's not possible to judge impartially like this. I'm really interested to see a correct comparison of both. Thanks for some interesting comments however.
can i just say, all the yanks trying to knock this guys accent are forgetting the fact that this is OUR language (the ENGLISH language) so ACTUALLY it should be US taking the piss out of YOU fucking ignorant americans. good review.
@000TheGingerOne000 I agree. Even though I'm American, I wonder how our accents even because so altered from the standard English accent. What would even cause it to change the way it did? Why did our accent change, but yours didn't? Meh, it's whatever I suppose. Accents are just accents; they shouldn't change your view of a person or a group of people. You could say that what matters is what they say, not the accent attached to it.
The dynamic lighting range of a human eye depends on if you have lazy eyelids [to remove glare from above] or openly stare like a maniac to get more glare.
An app that tones down bright light to match darker areas will make your pics look silly!
Cheers for the review. I bought this app after watching you vid and it's GREAT! I never know about HDR but I am now basking in all it's glory! Thanks mate!
i dont think the photos were fair comparison. Notice the pictures were taken at different levels of the mall. The right one is compositionally superior than the other. Even without the HDR in effect, the right photo would still look better. Secondly, notice the light casted on the golden dome on the left photo. It changes the dynamic of the photo completely as it brightened up a big party of the photo. second photo didn't have that to deal with. To me, i am not sold on the comparison.
@jasonckliang The app is cheap as chips (and has now been updated to compatibility with iOS4.1 so you CAN take DIRECT comparison shots unlike what I was able to do), and iOS4.1 is now publicly available. So feel free to do your own comparison shots, I have absolutely no doubt you'll find yourself agreeing with y assessment that the Pro HDR app, while slower, offers vastly superior HDR shots to the slightly hit-and-miss but still usable results of the built in HDR
I only figured out how I managed to not find it. I couldn't find it because I'm an idiot and I searched for it on the 3rd generation iPod Touch in the app store app instead of the program on my computer. Sorry for wasting your time like that.
@Shaun4karate Aaah, yes... that'd do it, seems the app store tends to not bother showing you stuff you can't use. Fair enough, at least we know you're not going insane or blind or something ;P
My Nikon D50 can do HDR by taking three very quick shots with different apertures, all automatically. Still have to process the image on my PC, though :P
What is the actual name of Pro HDR? I searched for it in the app store and didn't turn up any relevant results. It may be because I'm in the USA and that app may not be available here. let me know about this if you can.
@Shaun4karate It's "pro HDR" why would I spend the entire video calling it that if it wasn't its "actual name"? I even showed a screen-shot if its own icon. It took me two seconds to find a link. Hell, even the second result in Google for "pro hdr" is a link to the US app-store webpage for it. I've no clue how you managed to NOT find it actually.
"i've been blunty" you know, it's not weird your saying that. It's the most common mistake people make in presentating.. i know.. because i'm doing that same thing myself.. P annoying :P
I don't even HAVE an iPhone but this is a valuable review. Thanks! I'll be sharing the information with friends who do have iPhones. Poor photo quality is a big complaint from loads of people using their phones to take pictures.
Love how you explain stuff! Thanks for explaining the whole HDR thing - I never knew what those letters stood for. And now you've made it all clear to me!
Heh i think this is kinda weird but when ever i get a response from you it feels like I'm getting a response from a famous person, not that your not famous but you are pretty cool.
I just bought Pro HDR also, great app, but Steve's little announcement of built in HDR made me feel I wasted my money. But all is good now that I know the built in stuff isn't as good and I didn't waste my money. Hopefully the Pro HDR guys can use some features of iOS 4.1 to make there app take 3 shots faster and use the led flash.
The biggest difference in the side by side comparison photos was you took the photos from two different floors of the building, I know that's not the point but, I notice little stuff like that.
i love images taken using a HDR camera, me being a artist, i really like the look of the images. When i bring HDR images into a program like photoshop, it adds more pop and overall makes the end result of whatever im *photoshopping* even more awesome. great review as always Nate :).
Your pictures aren't really good evidence, why you may ask? Well for one, you took them on different levels + Obviously seems to be later on in the day.
@2PwnNewbs Feel free to do your own comparisons when iOS4.1 is released in the next couple days, it's free and the App is cheap. (Hopefully the ProHDR will have their update ready to fix the comparability problem that caused me to have to take the pictures on different days by then).
thanks for explaining HDR, heared it a few times before but never knew what's behind it : ) Even my untrained eye can see the difference, it looks beautiful!
Ugh, from a photography standpoint, most actual photographers think that 98% of HDRs are overdone and done badly. It's a fad, and I really do hope it passes over soon.

Wow! Check that out. Basically it really makes your photos look "Professional." It's like a Professional that throws a Filter on a lens and using the correct FStop and film speed. It is Modifying, but just in a different way. Make you get all NetGeo! Love the slight push up of Saturation. When ur HDR Pro gets fixed hope you do a Montage of your pics.
Blunty, have you considered reviewing that star viewing app? The one where you point your Iphone or Ipad at the night sky and it tells you what star formation your looking at?
I was about to say "Well warn people that iOS4.1 will have HDR included" but decided to wait for the video to end.
I think I might use Pro HDR anyway, I doubt they'll include the HDR feature for the 3GS' and I doubt it will have any blending tools. I just hate how Apple don't include stuff just because they want people to get the next model. Like iMovie, that supposedly requires a front facing camera to work (Facepalm) I have the ReelDirector alternative that I found out from you.
Wow...I needed this when I was in Italy taking all those great photos... :P
I wish my video camera had something like this, it's a pain in the ass to get two different shots of the bright stuff and then another one of the dark stuff..
i like both of them but i like how in the Iphone HDR shot you can see outside of the window better. thats just me i guess cause when i Do HDR i don't go for higher saturation i just go for all around visibility.
