I've been playing in pitch black with a headset and just got to the prison. Jesus. Christ. I just had to turn the game off, it was just too much. That was enough psychological trauma for one night.
A suggestion to anyone willing to play this game. SAVE YOUR LANTERN OIL. I suggest you play through a good portion of the beginning of the game without using your lantern as this game will get EXTREMELY scary later on. The horror will only be amplified about a million times when you can't see a damn thing.
@leewolfgang I thought the same thing when I watched it. To clarify, the reviewer meant that he never had any confrontations during the crazy hallucination sections.
@BlueScream7 I don't believe there's much of a spoiler there. Instead of specific events, I talk about how the story goes into certain concepts. Since you have amnesia, I figured it's only logical to spoil as little as possible.
Definetly scarier than Resident Evil cause Resident Evil for me was just goofy for me what made Resident Evil goofy was the dialogue and actions of characters really head for the police station come on.
Ehh, I'm not too sure about the "Shows the lows that humans will go to-" thing that he said. Penumbra: Black Plague actually made me really think about how the Infected saw humanity and how both could be seen as nightmarishly horrible- Amnesia on the other hand... Just made me piss myself in fright.
@XionZacor Well there are huge differences between the dangers in Penumbra and Amnesia. Penumbra is sort of the generic "zombie outbreak" sort of thing (a little more mature than that, of course), but the things you find out about in the latter half of Amnesia *spoiler*
sgnieb namuh rehto ot sgnieb namuh yb enod yleritne
*spoiler*
which struck a chord with me that Penumbra never came close to reaching. Though I did feel much more attached to Penumbra's characters.
I had this game on my hard drive for 2 weeks before i even dared to install it. No joke! After installing, I played for a while, part of me wanted to quit within the first few mins because the graphics were so bad, but I knew that the real reason was that I was too scared to play it and I was looking for an excuse not to.
Finally I got to playing it and I liked it, it's creepy, creepy in a way that's different from Resident Evil or anything else you've played.
Why is every one complaining about his voice? I mean not every one has to say it but his real deep reviews make up for "his voice." you are one of favorite reviewers that dont make a short summary of the game they play and say their final words like "oh dont bother with this game" or "this is a great game" and then say go read our full writen review (thats mainly im too lazy to read the whole thing)
but for those who've passed the game... did you notice that you never actually encounter a real physical person...? only the beings that seem to be ghost and those cosmic wastes that seem like monsters?... that is just one of the mysteries that envelopes the game... i consider two games in my life horror games... Sanitarium and Amnesia...
@therealattacka i don't even think that developers even have the real truth wrote down somewhere... but it is weird and i was even sceptical during the game that i will encounter any living "sane" creature with the clothes on^^... so in the end i think that daniel is only a ghost...many things indicate that he is
@RubiixCat i have it (a good game like this is a must have) but he dosent want to see it he claims to have played the demo and based on that he says its not scary
@CyberPohlice It's okay. Lots of the scary parts are scripted (get item X, monster Y spawns), which means you can see things coming before they happen the second time through, but the story is great and worth another playthrough to absorb it. There's also commentary on how the game was made (interesting!) and there are community-made mods that you can find mainly on the FG forum.
Penumbra's lifespan is better though because threats are much more real, things don't just poof away after a while.
@leewolfgang My message wasnt intended to offend, apologies if it did as it was a mess around, but I dont remember knowing he was a ghost from the first part of gameplay that I played (Didnt actually play it all because it just wouldnt run well.....well...at all on my machine to be enjoyable)
@roadkill1001 Well I didn't mean ghost literally (though Nesterov's corporeality is debatable, but far too much to fit into a 500 character textbox). I said you feel like a ghost because in both Amnesia and Cryostasis because both worlds are populated completely by the dead/undead.
Invited 4 friends over to play this game, as a fun horror movie/game night. Even though we had 5 people in a room, this game still scared the crap out of all of us. Also, with the addition of 5 minds, the puzzles were solved quite fast and progressed the story (which is a good thing). All in all, this game is worth getting x5.
@adamanddustinh not grammatically correct swedish, looks like you used babelfish since it's pretty much directly translated from your english sentence. am I right? ;)
On another more relevant note, this game looks completely amazing, this review convinced me that I want to buy this game, thank you reviewer. this is definitely the best review on youtube.
@mrtopaz No... This is correct... I grew up in Sweden, I think I should know. If you used Google Translate to check what it says and grammar and such, it will be wrong as it has been almost every time I mess around wit hit and translate English and Swedish. And lolwut is Babelfish?
@adamanddustinh uuh.. okey? "Det här spelet och företaget är ytterligare en anledning till att jag är stolt över att vara svensk." is the grammatically correct sentence... but yeah, I don't even know what to say about that one.
@mrtopaz ...I dunno. What you are typing looks wrong to me and what I am typing looks wrong to you. Whatever. Just btw, my Swedish has a heavy influence from Norway, so it is highly possible that the difference in dialect does that. But I did misspell some words... oh well.
should i get this game ? i like horror games but i thing iv only played horror games that do nothing but try and make you jump out of your seat if this game makes you too sceard to even want to play it then is this game good to start me off cos i havent played that many horror games ?
@harrisonpie It depends on how scared you are of the ones you've played. My first horror game was FEAR, I think, and I was just "pssh, whatever" about it. If you're "pssh, whatever" about the games you've played so far, then you might want to try this.
I tried out Amnesia on the suggestion of a friend of mine, and I was very pleasantly surprised, and one reason why I thought the horror was so good was that there are almost NO jump scares at all. You can hear almost every enemy before you see it, and the horror is built from the atmosphere. I can only remember once or twice when I got a shock, and even then, they were subtle (something similar to seeing a picture wink at you... it's as shock, but it's not a zombie jumping up.)
I invited a friend to play it with me after 30min playing this :) Awesome game, scary as hell at times. You're always on edge, and the adrenaline rushes are almost forcing you to take a few breaks. Which I would, if it wasn't such an incredible game. A perfect balance between "action", horror and puzzle.
I just beat the game yesterday. Definitely in my top five favorites, along with Metal Gear Solid, Mass Effect, Half-Life, Assassin's Creed, and now Amnesia.
I absolutely love how this game provokes your survival instinct. I totally agree that this is probably so far the most disturbing and scary horror game that has been released.
"Even if after you buy it you're just going to watch people play it on youtube because you're a stupid wimp" lol exactly what I'm doing, trying to see as many people as possible say how awesome the game is so I'll suck it up and play it.
Play on the hardest difficulty, all the enemies kill you in one blow. (two if you get lucky and they just graze you). It is much more scary when you know that If you are caught you are pretty much screwed. And it is far more realistic...
@leewolfgang I know, and even that level isn't that tough. but just KNOWING that you are so vulnerable and can be taken down in a single blow by anything is scary. im not looking for challenge, im looking for the fear of knowing how dangerous it is...
One of the commentary nodes explains that they didn't want to make Daniel a full character because the old Danny is erased by the amnesia potion. They said that they wanted the player to become the new Daniel and project themselves onto him.
@DesertSun0 I don't think I ever objected to that, but I think you're referring to my statement that people rarely communicate with him. I'm saying that there should probably have been someone who communicates with you and you'd need to get to him or her as an objective, like Red or Amabel in Penumbra.
lol your right i am a wimp, im currently watching a lets play of this game but even while i watch i get scared to watch T.T. this gameis caryer then every other game ive seen or played. maybe i wouldve played it but its only for the pc. i have a console
I gotta question do the enemie move in a fixed route like in other stealth games and only deviate from their path if they see you? Also those damn creatures are fast and so much for runnning 0_0
@Tom3744 I don't really know the specifics on how enemy AI works. I think it's different from each one. Many encounters are scripted so that something only searches and then may not be seen again, while others are by patrolling enemies following a guided path. And there are other types of encounters too. You'll just have to find out which enemy does what.
This demo scared the shit outta me. But I find that i will not buy the game because of the inverted effect that is a constant when i play the game. perhaps i need to get the hang of it but it was a big drawback playing the majority of it upside down. it took away from realism and made the game harder than it needed to be. frustrating.
@kalashnikov96 the only but i got stuck on was the part after you see the first monster, with the door leading down into a celler, the leaver to open it would not work :P
Once again Great review, I tend to only favourite videos i think i wont remember that i think are great. But both your penumbra and amnesia reviews i find great! ill definitely check these games out some time.
By the way, all of this footage is from my first, completely blind playthrough. Things like 3:43 - 4:50 is a real reaction I had when I first entered the level.
I used to think I was somewhat brave. But after seeing this gameplay, I don't think I can play this game without playing with a freind, a million bright lights, and a photo of jerry seinfeld with me.
@ThePeanutShark Ah but the atmosphere is the best thing! I'd usually have something on whilst playing a horror game, but this just looks so atmospheric i dont think i could bring myself to ruin it!
This is, hands down, one of the best amateur reviews I have seen.

But I find that i will not buy the game because of the inverted effect that is a constant when i play the game. perhaps i need to get the hang of it but it was a big drawback playing the majority of it upside down. it took away from realism and made the game harder than it needed to be. frustrating.

@kaine180 Yeah the demo was pretty hard for me with the Insanity thing turned on. The game itself is amazing though!

@kalashnikov96 the only but i got stuck on was the part after you see the first monster, with the door leading down into a celler, the leaver to open it would not work :P

@kaine180 Yeah, I was so disoriented that some of the puzzles proved quite fidgety

I like how you started with how generic amnesia is in games.
