3:13 video: "Stardust" is an American popular song composed in 1927 by Hoagy Carmichael with lyrics added in 1929 by Mitchell Parish (July 10, 1900 – March 31, 1993)
This was my Mother and Father's song. They were married in 1936. Later in years when my Mother heard this she would just stop whatever she was doing and just listen. I knew where she went. Back to her youth and just remebering her times. The song remaines one of my favorites. Nicly done here just like she would have remembered. Thanks for the memories.
I recall seeing Hoagy Carmichael play and sing this on TV a long, long time ago. Loved it then and love it now. I thought Hoagy wrote the words. Now I learn he didn't write them. They are masterful. A lot of composers could learn from these lyrics. I think I used to listen to Julie London's version in the wee hours of the morning while driving home, but it could have been someone else.
Thanks for posting this. It should have ranked higher.
Was surfing for Dusty Springfield's songs on youtube and I stumbled upon your channel. Way cool!! I like your cover of Stardust best. Your stripped down version I believe really captures the era in which the song was written. Not so easy to pull off in this age of Autotune LOL!
...in time immemorial when His ponderance of sub-real particles coalesced into a brand newly created universe of things and moments, where His song vibrations popped into being that urged the the things to form stars which to live and eventually vaporize to a dust that will make its way next to the essence of a soul that will sing the song we call STARDUST...
Perry Como, who sang everything so well and for a long time, sang Stardust, but versions are hard to find. I think one was up on Youtube for awhile.
Andy Williams had a fine version, too.
So did the Great Dinah Washington.
NPR did a series on the 100 best songs of the 20th century, and the article on Stardust was really interesting. Such a fine song, conceived by Carmichael as he was walking across his college campus at twilight. Check out The NPR 100.
Nicely done with careful attention paid by the vocalist to the phasing which demands control or will just spill all over the tune. Thanks for this site as a very entertaining tribute to a musical time and era that lives on through the old and the new, Kudos to you!
Oh my God just love this version! That's just the way I use to sing it, and I was really irritated by Natt King Cole's version, wich is very different, much quicker. Congratulate you!
Wonderful - thank you so much for such a beautiful work of art - a tribute to a wonderful song from a great composer so beautifully sung. Would like to subscribe to your videos!! BB x
What a beautiful rendition of this timeless classic!
Regarding the guitar part - do you know where I can get a copy (as chords, on the stave or in TAB)? I would like to have a go at this myself. It sounds as though you, Shuie, are playing a nylon-strung acoustic guitar; which is what I play, too.
Misspopanoche, you have taken this very difficult song and made it sound effortlessly simple. Colour me DEEPLY impressed.
And thanks for the back-story. (I'm familiar with Hoagy and his many wonderful tunes. He's certainly one of the best things Indiana's ever produced ;-)
We both thought this was a lovely version, and enjoyed the information you provided. I'm a classical musician, but ashamed to admit I didn't know the song, before my SO got me to search for the Nat King Cole version and Hoagy Carmichael original today. Thanks for your version, I think your smoky timbre is perfect for this and the guitar accompaniment simple and just right. Hoagy's own version almost obscures the beautiful simplicity of the melody!
In one of my favorite old movies, "To Have and Have Not" with Humphrey Bogart and a young Lauren Bacall, Hoagie Carmichael has a bit part where he writes songs and plays them on Piano while Bacall sings. Stardust is a song from a far classier time than ours. Thank you for your nice interpretation of it.
very beautiful version of a very beautiful song: both the guitar & the vocals, makes me remember my puppy love, my first love, my true love, makes me romantic once again. THANK YOU!
VERY NICE- beautiful voice- love the guitar work!! One of the great American classics for sure-- Thanks so much for all the great info- My personal fave was the Nat Cole version, then yours of course:)
YOU Have a beautiful voice and know how to get the message across.. great job..nice guitar work too..who are you guys? do you do gigs? The mics dont matter when the music is really there like in your case..
Beautiful!!! Was looking for Hoagy Carmichael singing, but, this is fantastic. Great interpretation!! You know, guys sing some great songs for us gals/ladies ;0) - often we would love to have a beautiful song sung by a lady for our fellow of our dreams!! Yep, Girl of my Dreams was another beautiful song sung by a fella - please will you give it a whirl ? Thank you for the great rendition!!
Thank you for this most beautiful rendition of Stardust. My favorite song since since i was a very small child. Your version is what I call youtube serendipity, (a happy accident )while looking for another song.
This is a perfect arrangement of this wonderful song sung perfectly, the accompanyment is sublime with just a guitar played with aplomb.. Can I get a better quality copy of it from ur website or anywhere?
Hi eaglesonofwill, I'm thrilled to hear you enjoyed our cover. It is a wonderful song. We only have this recording, It was recorded with an old gig mic so it's great quality. I'm hoping to get a few recorded with our upgraded equipment soon.
Thank u for ur response. I remember hearing an old version of this song and thinking how wonderful it would sound with just a solo jazz guitar and a great singer.. and I listened to ur version and was amazed to have found it. I have this listed as a favorite: I would love to have it as an mp3 to add to my listening collection. Many thanks again.
Very nice version--just before I found yours, I was listening to 8 others, posting 4 them on Facebook as a challenge to friends to "choose the 'best' STARDUST." THANK YOU FOR THIS ONE! (I'm going to post it on Facebook now, too.)
Hi analogyman.. Thanks for a lovely comment. There are sooo many version of this song I'm sure you'll all have fun listening to them all... It was 'the' most covered song in history until Paul McCartney wrote 'Yesterday'.
This was awesome. I've been looking for something like this for a solo for my choir next year and I definitely thinks this sounds like a challenge. You make it sound easy, but I bet it isn't
Hoagy and Nat King Cole make it sound easy - Until Paul McCartney wrote 'Yesterday' this was the most covered song ever so it is a challenge a lot seem to take. Good luck, I'm sure you'll do it beautifully.
a great version thanks alot- your sound is simple and that is a a difficult feat of itself- my band sounds alot like you guys- standards without the whole bebop thing- nice stuff-thanks

Hi miaastro. Thanks for such a wonderful comment. We're very happy to hear you enjoyed our interpretation, it's a beautiful song that we really wanted to do justice to.
I enjoyed this a lot... I am looking for a certain version I heard almost a decade ago. I haven't found it, but your list shall help me in my search. thanks for posting this. Your version is also very good.
Beautiful! Perfect, in fact. YES! The most recorded tune in the history of music up until the 1980s when something or other beat it out and right now, whilst listening to you beautiful voice sing this ... I'd rather not trouble to think which it was. No matter... the song is its own legacy!
Hey.. so sorry for late reply. Thanks for such a wonderful comment. The song you're thinking about is Yesterday by Paul McCartney.. god awful song if you ask me LOL but what do I know?
This song is just a beautiful classic that will always stand the test of time.
I am a huge fan of Hoagy's.Like Hoagy I was born in Bloomington,Indiana and moved away.Like Hoagy,I am an IU grad. While I was a student my favorite bar in Bloomingbton(along with Nick's)was the Stardust, which is no longer there.Hoagy was a brilliant composer, pianist and personality-which you can see by his brief movie appearances. He wrote many good songs, but Stardust,Georgia on My Mind,Skylark are exceptional.Missp.&Shuie, you did Hoagy proud.Great job&thanks for all the information on Hoagy.
I can't tell you how thrilled I am when we get comments like this.. I'm sure Hoagy would be amazed at how long lasting his music has become. Very, very few songs of today will stand the test of time..Hoagy will live on for decades to come.
Well done!! It's hard to beat the voices of Nat King Cole, Ella's, etc., but the whole project, with the little bits of info from wiki, is pretty neat. And by the way, that guitar player is awesome!
Thankyou Tomate. The guitarist is awesome - I said I would like to have a go singing this and he(having hardly heard it) just picked up his guitar and played it start to finish.
This whole project took us less than 30 minutes to complete. Glad you enjoyed the info, I found it all pretty neat too.
Hello missp. what a wonderful rendition of, to me,the best song "ever" written, played, sung. And you do it justice. You have a lovely voice dear. The guitar sounded great, and the fact that you had a "not so expensive" mike, didn't make any difference at all. Thank you for it. Lovely!!
Songs like this prove they can stand the test of time & arrangement. You don't see ANY songs written in this day n' age that we can say that about. Frankly.. who needs them when we have material like this to work with.
that was sweet. thank you.

Thank you so very much for sending it!!
Just lovely!

Hey.. so sorry for late reply. Thanks for such a wonderful comment. The song you're thinking about is Yesterday by Paul McCartney.. god awful song if you ask me LOL but what do I know?
This song is just a beautiful classic that will always stand the test of time.

You certainly have done justice, no you made it come alive again...sultry, silky, sad, sentimental, soft....

Thanks again, you've really made my day.

Lovely!!

Lovely. Voice and guitar. Voice and orchestra, voice and piano. It seems there's no limit to this song and I haven't heard a bad version yet.

Songs like this prove they can stand the test of time & arrangement. You don't see ANY songs written in this day n' age that we can say that about. Frankly.. who needs them when we have material like this to work with.
Glad you approve of our version tho.
Thanks for commenting.
