the so called "bonner engine" of Walter Schmied has similar working principles, but it utilises a divided "crankshaft". He has patented it in the US (Pat. number 7721684)
It was already build some decades ago by a german university. The scientists concludedthat it ran great but the perfect balance wasn't eneaugh to justify a new mechanism.
But at that time NVH wasn't as important as it is today, thats why I digged out that concept.

Well this just looks like a much heavier and unrealistic version of the engine we have now

when the piston is moving upwards, does it suffer an opposing force from the balancers?
