The institution of slavery ( human owning another human) didn't end until 1865, people live well into the 100's, so when you grow up hearing about what it was like be in the service of whites, it's hard not to be sensative. If we let go of slavery, what about all the years after that? What about the 20's-40's when blacks were being hung from tree's? What about segregation and the civil rights era? What about James Bryd Jr.who was drug to death in 1998? Stop giving us reasons to be sensative.
It boils down to this, if you are not a racist white then you have no reason to say anything negative about another race. You have no authority to say anything about another race as though you are part of that race. As far as getting over slavery, that's hard to do when you are still thought of as inferior and it's even harder when you come from an older generation family where you knew a family member that was an ex-slave, born to slaves, went through the lynching years, civil rights era, etc.

Obama was saying that his grandma holding stereotypes was not unique. He was trying to establish that there are still widely held streotypes between the races. And that there is historical context to these thoughts existing in our society. And that we need to keep moving away form holding these stereotypes. He does have a unique perspective of having a mixed race and religion family background that exposes him directly to some of these negative thoughts. and he rejects those thoughts as a result

The institution of slavery ( human owning another human) didn't end until 1865, people live well into the 100's, so when you grow up hearing about what it was like be in the service of whites, it's hard not to be sensative. If we let go of slavery, what about all the years after that? What about the 20's-40's when blacks were being hung from tree's? What about segregation and the civil rights era? What about James Bryd Jr.who was drug to death in 1998? Stop giving us reasons to be sensative.

okay I'll be the first to admit I don't know a whole lot on politics but why is it about race? It should be about who is qualified(sp?) for the job. As far as the "Typical White Person" comment goes, wasn't he raised by white grandparents??? I would find that to be legitimate although many people would jump on the phrasing. I don't think you can have a meaningful dialogue without giving the message more credence than the phrasing or else we just play this politically corfrect semantics game all day and no true progress occurs. Thanks for the post Vitalfinds. I am a black person and over the course of my life I have changed views on ambiguously offensive talk. If someone calls a group typical I really just want hear an explanation in what way they are typical. I was satisfied that there was no racism in his speech because he immediately explained the common mistrust that many white people of black people they don't know. If another candidate referred to the typical black person having some mistrust of law enforcement

Personally, I hope he doesn't get the nomination. The reason why is because the Democratic Convention is held before the Republican Convention. If Ron Paul gets the nomination at the Republican Convention, which he has a good chance at doing, then he could lose votes during the national election if Obama, the Democrat's candidate for change, gets the Democratic nomination.
If Hillary is selected, then Ron Paul would win the national elections by a land slide.

Obama was saying that his grandma holding stereotypes was not unique. He was trying to establish that there are still widely held streotypes between the races. And that there is historical context to these thoughts existing in our society. And that we need to keep moving away form holding these stereotypes. He does have a unique perspective of having a mixed race and religion family background that exposes him directly to some of these negative thoughts. and he rejects those thoughts as a result
