Actually the original theory on 2012 is not that the world is going to end but the world the way we know it is going to change. The change is supposedly more geographically and climatically. One writing of Edgar Cayce who is one of the predictors of 2012 also said that if we take care of the earth then it won't happen. Its a matter of humans changing their habits.

It seems to me that when we fear "the end of the world" we see ourselves surviviing "the end" and the anxiety is not about dying from a disaster but about living through it and having to deal with the aftermath -- for which we think we ca "be prepared." I liked the message here -- heal yourself today and whatever happens tomorrow, you'll be as ready for it as you can be -- lol!
