truth be told, that katy cooper manga book is not the greatest one in the world. I only use it to reference hairstyles and the stick figures that she uses for anatomy. It's an okay book, but it really should be called

"How to Draw Incredibly Americanized Manga."

and I am aware that it's old.

Also, It doesn't really matter what books you read about drawing manga, I'd suggest reading them all just to get variety in your "training"

I didn't mean to totally hack down on your video it's just. . .I'm anal about detail and feel sometimes (out of my own experience) that these kind of things when I was starting out made it seem that there werent any other options. It was a bit restricting.

But like I said. Other that that, great video about how to get started.

What was I gonna say. . .right. The book suggestions were good, but a particular pencil and so on isn't really enccesary if it's drawing for practice. . .in fact, The only requirements for any drawing is a pencil of any kind and an eraser that can erase said pencils lines. Though of course you know this i guess

The MegaManga book by Keith Sparrow is very good!! It teaches you alot of variety of basic manga foundation to begin with and about so many things. The only thing is that it doesn't go beyond the basics but if you are curious about it, by all means, BUY IT!!!

I suggest picking up a few of the "How to Draw Manga" books made by real professionals. No offense, but those books are very amateurish. They don't show you how to draw real manga. The characters in the books look awkward and very lacking. For example, their eyes are too big. Plus, they need more shading and detail to give them more dimension. The list goes on, but that's all I can tell you right now.

@NicoleLouis I completely agree. These books didn't really help me at all. When I got the red one up there, my level had already surpassed it, so I was like.....EH, WATEVS. I suggest studying different styles, like Death Note, Naruto, DBZ, Bleach, just to name a few, Study those specific styles, and then make your own. MUCH EASIER :)

those books are alright for the very basics, but I wouldn't take too much from them because they are amaturish at best, after you grab the simplicities I would move onto other books. I suggest 'Draw Your Own Manga: All the Basics' it goes into the process of manga not just the charcters. And as you go further in you manga you should really learn to outline with ink instead of dark lead pencils. It gives it an overall cleaner look...just my opinion though

Those books are actually good to start off with.

But dont use them after you have gotten your basics down, like after at least a year.

Then I recomment the next step up. Such as The Monster Book of Manga which you can get at any Borders store. Then again, after a year.

Next step. Start freestyling. You should be down by then and start molding your own style. Keep working hard, believe in yourself, practicepracticepractice and you'll be on a good way to success. :)

Just keep reminding yourself to say MON-GA and you'll get used to saying it that way without a second thought.

Also, you might want to include some rubber erasers and mechanical pencils. Rubber can really help you with quickly getting rid of marks without pressing hard on the paper. And mechanical pencils can give you nice clean, clear lines. You know, not really dull lines if your pencils wear down. It keeps you from having to keep sharpening. But they are wonderful for shading! :)

The Mega Manga book is a horrible style of manga ..I absolutely think it looks weird, the lines the the characters hair is crooked, the lines for the face is crooked and everything ! the one on the right (I own it) is way better ! there is more festive hair, and way more varity.

good vid. though do you have the How to draw manga books by Go office. a good pencil you should try is non photo blue which wont appear on the scanner if you draw light with it. a good book to pick up for muscles is how to draw manga bodies and anatomy and if you like mecha get the HTDM giant robots. have a good day 1Animekitten :3
