  • -What about velocity?

-As my keyboard skills near closer to rivaling my guitar, I personally would have no use for such a controller. This is only because I don't want to spend the money.

However, for multi-instrumentalists like myself, I could see how having this around would be an easy way to get inspired and write something new. I'm not a fan of a single patch that this guy used but I see the potential because I play guitar differently than I do my synthesizer. Could be very interesting

  • keep on pressing 4 :D

  • Cool stuff. So does this thing actually have a BASS sound or two in the presets? I saw a sample of the synth bass on their website (weak, it was), but I can't seem to find a list of all the presets on the web. I can only assume that it does.

  • @flowride68 The presets aren't very good. If you aren't going to use this with some sort of DAW you will probably be disappointed.

  • velocity ?

  • Looks like it doesn't have strings on the fretboard? That's the issue, I see it can track flawlessly, but with no proper strings = no expression = just a toy. Look at the Synthaxe and the Yamaha G10 both have full sets of strings all at the same gauge, the Synthaxe became an expressive instrument in the hands of Allan Holdsworth.

  • @drkam6 The strings are on the fretboard, but sort glued or build on the fretboard, so it's insanely low action. The YRG can be surprisingly expressive. The main thing you have to realize is the YRG isn't really a guitar but a digital interface in the shape of a guitar. It's an affordable polyphonic midi controller than can be played like a guitar. The Synthaxe, even used, costs almost 25 times MORE than the YRG and isn't close to 25 times better than the YRG.

  • sort of glued or built on the fretboard*

  • @xplicitpoetix "Because the YouRock guitar doesn't have normal strings, you can't do bends and vibratos as you normally would on a traditional guitar". I think it might be like some old controller I tried, the "strings" were just long plastic bumps along the fretboard. A Yamaha G10 (with real strings) is quite affordable these days although rare. Look for Dr. Ika's videos demonstrating its capability. Even the Casio DG-20 (with plastic strings) can get the expression of a guitar.

  • @drkam6 I'm a child of the 80's, I always wanted a DG-20, but never got my hands on one. The G10 looks alright, but I am weird about used stuff.. Although the expressiveness isn't quite the same, you can still do quite a lot with midi and vsti's. I was able to sample my normal guitar setup playing various techniques (palm muting, harmonics, bends, etc) and create my own soft synths, but I like it for controlling other instrument sounds where the expressiveness of the guitar doesn't translate

  • @DanMummSolo...this video was a HUGE reason why I bought the YRG. Very fun to play with as a midi controler, but I'm having a lot of issues getting it setup to use more guitar specific techniques, such as sweeping. Every time I try to sweep, I am finding a string or two is always omitted, despite being hit. My hammer-ons and pull-offs sometimes result in double notes. Can you share with us your settings from the YRG Control Panel? Looks like your strings are tight, is that correct? Thanks!

  • I did a lot of tweaking in the control panel today and hammer-ons and pull-offs are working fine. The string issues I had were resolved by tightening up the strings. I'm still very interested in @DanMummSolo YRG Control Panel setup, but mine is at least serviceable right now. RIght now I am starting to notice the volume of the notes are inconsistent, I think that has to do with velocity, but like I said, I'm pretty new to midi controllers.

  • very tasty playing, btw. Sold me. Can't wait to play one over here in Thailand in our beach charity mini concerts. Think House of the rising sun organ part....

  • @DanMummSolo how do you record your own voice using the You Rock Guitar? (I mean the "sample your own voice" thingy). I've been searching everywhere but still can't figure it out :(

  • @deliciouscraneberry If you dont know about recording it might be kind of hard..

First you need a mic or an audio interface something to record your voice into the computer.. OR you could record it into a sampler if you own one. On the computer you would have to put it into a software sampler as well. Then you need to plug the midi cable into your audio interface (that is connected to the computer) or in the sampler if you are using a hardware sampler, and then the guitar plays whatever samples

  • Will it work with Sony’s Acid Music Studio 8? Thanks!

  • dude what if the string broke???

  • So how hard would it be to strip this guitar down and put the electronics into a regular guitar?

  • im sold i will get this hope it work on windows and for fl look out us guitar player going midi lol

  • this midi guitar looks awesome.....

  • can someone please tell me the song he started playing with the organ effect when he started demonstrating the built in effects at 2:28?

  • @maggot93666 toccata und fugue by johann sebastian bach

  • This was the kind of review i was looking for. I've always wanted a guitar to control Reason and Vst synths. How does finger picking on it? I've heard some reviewers say it gets funky when it comes to picking non-adjacent strings in this style.

  • can you use this to control notation software?

  • great review thx!

  • @artgonewrong TOY? What an arse!

  • Looks like a great toy!

  • @artgonewrong Heheh I wouldn't exactly call one of the most powerful and versatile music creation tools to hit the market in years, a "toy"...

  • @DanMummSolo I call all of my 17 guitars 'ladies'...that this is no lady....sorry.

  • @artgonewrong No need to apologize. Sounds like you've got an old school way of looking at guitars. I wouldn't argue with you there. But remember, this isn't a guitar. It's not a lady or a toy. It's a powerful music creation tool. Your favorite guitar might be a "lady", but this is a "computer". You can't really compare the two.

  • @DanMummSolo it will destroy the world aahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahaha

  • @DanMummSolo exactly a computer not instrument. people should learn about music and how to play instruments not just use computer programs to do everything for you. that's how we ended up with rap music and dub step....eww

  • cesc fabregas? XD

  • What happens if a string breaks?

  • @DrxSlump I think you'd have to try to cut one of the wires that simulate strings in order to break it. I highly doubt that it could break from picking it. But in that event, you would just order a replacement and put it in the guitar. It's pretty easy to tighten and/or loosen the strings to fit your preference. I believe you could remove a string the same way.

  • @DanMummSolo thanks for the reply. Alright then, I'm getting this! I was thinking about remaking lost/unreleased soundtracks on Garage Band but I couldn't be bothered with learning keys, while a regular MIDI guitar costs a fortune. Seems ideal for my case...

  • Totally reminds me of Nintendo's Mega Man music...

  • Beautiful how you played Bach Tocatta and Fugue! Can't you post a vid with the whole song in it?

  • the "You could even sample your voice" bit was awesome

  • If I ever made a video game, I'd want to use that version of your song as the main theme.

  • I loved the sampling voice part.

  • ALMOST zero latency. i want none!

  • i wanna get it so i can get wilford brimley saying DIABEETUS

  • Very cool, especially for the price! Is it velocity sensitive with how hard you hammer on?

  • dude what happens if you break a string??do they have little replacement strings or what??and also its not like a touch pad is it like its buttons or what?

  • am what would you do if you snapped the string on the body ???

  • Really great review of the YouRock (it helps when you are a very good guitarist to :-) lol)

    Well done!

    Batninja

  • i know i do

  • This is by far the best demonstration of the You Rock Guitar. It surely has helped me to make up my mind about buying one.

    Oh...ya I'm getting one alright!

  • Nice demo and great playing, however the camera switching was a little over the top. :)

  • @polaris20 , there's always some ridiculous moaner who bitches about the most stupid things...

  • @luigiperso and likewise there's always some asshat hiding behind a keyboard and monitor, making dumb remarks about Youtube comments. I guess we can't win them all, can we?

  • @luigiperso I agree, why can't others just go to another video instead of leaving such horrible or assinine comments as you certainly can't please everyone nor would you want to really.

  • Great review Dan..U sold me!

  • @petepachio It is so much fun to play! Enjoy!

  • play the actual thing my long haired lizard

  • @turdynurd Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your rather cryptic comment, but if you're referring to the sounds that come built-in to the guitar, I do demonstrate those sounds for about the first half of the video. However, those sounds are not what makes this guitar so amazing. They are just fun so that you can play this wherever you go. Many midi controllers do not even have built-in sounds since the point is to be able to use them to sample other instruments and play synths. Thanks for watching!

  • @turdynurd P.S. I've been called many things in my life, "long haired lizard" is certainly a new one! lol

  • *sigh* What a piece of junk. Seriously, why not just go get a keyboard/midi controller? All this is, is a guitar shaped midi-controller. If it quacks like a duck, and has feathers like a duck, guess what? IT'S STILL A DUCK!

  • @pixelboxcreative Have you tried it?? You are totally mistaken. It isn't just "shaped" like a guitar, it has a fret board and simulates six strings. If you are familiar with the scales and modes, chord shapes, arpeggios, interval distances, and you are comfortable with writing melody lines, chord progressions, harmonies etc. on a guitar neck, with this you can do that with ANY instrument sound. Any new software VST instrument can be used with this. It is mind-blowingly amazing actually.

  • @pixelboxcreative P.S. I didn't realize this when I wrote my previous response, but you probably aren't a guitar player. If you are strictly a piano player then I would see why this doesn't appeal to you. But imagine that before now there was ONLY guitar midi controllers, and now they finally came out with a long awaited, fully functional keyboard midi controller. That's what this does for guitarists! Thanks for watching!

  • @DanMummSolo

Actually, I play guitar, and use a DAW with several VSTs and midi controllers. I'm certainly not at the level of technical ability that you've reached to be sure, and I guess that considering your position (as a paid endorsee), I can understand your response...it's just not for me.

  • @pixelboxcreative I can understand that you may not be interested in something like this. It's a great inspirational tool though, and when you can play guitar and have the sound of say.. a moog.. it opens those inspiration channels right up! To clarify, this is an unbiased review. The guitar was given to me as a demo model (upon my request after hearing about it) I got some extra exposure from their website, but I don't have an endorsement deal with them. I just personally love this thing!

  • so whats the price?

  • @billycat1965 Around $250 or less I think. Check out the website!

  • DUDE I WANT ONE!!!...sorry for the caps, I got excited lol.

  • Sorry, I have to ask. What was that piece you played at 4:23? Or if it was improvised, what arpeggios did you use? I recognize the Cmaj at the beginning, but after that, I'm lost. I've watched it 30 times and I can't figure it out, but I love the way it sounds.

  • @ThePantangler Just an improv. The arpeggios are C (as you discovered), B (in 1st inversion, which is probably why you had difficulty figuring it out), and finally Em. Enjoy the sweep progression and thanks for watching!

  • @ThePantangler P.S. for anyone who doesn't already know, 1st inversion means that the lowest pitch is the 3rd instead of the root. For this pattern the frets would be (from low to high - 5th string to 1st string):18, 16, 16, 16, 14 (hammer-on to 19)

  • I want one.

  • Imagine the reactions from people when an entire band comes on to the stage armed with nothing but this! :D

  • @bhargavsharma007 Haha what an awesome idea!

  • Very cool...sounding great Dan :)

  • Cool review! That would be a great travel guitar.

  • Kool:)

  • It's too bad they charge $82 to ship to Canada, and with FedEx, who charge another $100 when they deliver it.

I would have gotten one otherwise.

  • @valkiris That's too bad. International shipping can be a pain, even on the same continent... I used to run a small business on eBay and I ran into similar issues with International. There are a lot of headaches involved beyond packaging, insurance and postage fees. I'm sure they are charging the minimum they can. It's too bad though, if the shipping is what is making it unaffordable for you. Perhaps it will become more affordable later.

  • @valkiris They are sold at Long and McQuade for $219.

  • @garyblades123 Wow, didn't know that. Thanks!!! I'll have to drop by L&M.

  • @valkiris Alright! Problem solved! :)

  • @DanMummSolo Yeah :)

BTW, did you use any extra hardware to get any of the sounds in your review (besides sampling other instruments), or was it all done using software?

  • @valkiris The YRG actually works as a USB midi controller. You don't even need a special audio interface, or external sound card with a midi connection to use it as a midi controller. The YRG comes with both a Midi out port and a USB out, so you can use it either way. To record high quality audio using the YRG's 1/4 inch jack, you would need an audio interface or sound card with a 1/4 inch input. If you're not recording, there's no need for this as you could just plug it in to your amp.

  • @valkiris (cont'd) to answer your question more directly.. I used no special hardware to get the sounds in the video, only software. I used an Alesis iO FireWire audio interface (external soundcard/mixer) for both the audio and midi connections, but all of the sounds were made from using soft synths, VST plug-ins, and sampling software (obviously not including the built-in sounds which were recorded with a 1/4 inch input).

  • One question... can you palm mute on this thing?

  • @valkiris You actually can not. At least not on this model, or with this firmware. However, it has built in sounds of palm muted guitars, or you could sample your own guitar with palm muting if you have a sampler. I use Cockos ReaSamplematic which comes stock with the open source DAW "Reaper". Reaper is my personal favorite DAW to work with, over Cubase or Logic, and it's free to download and demo. A personal use license is only $40!

  • Great review! Loved the Toccata and Fugue at 2:28

And the drums... all I have to say is LOL!!!! Awesome :)

  • @valkiris Thanks a lot! When I was playing around with it and found the organ sound, I had to throw in some Bach!
