I have friends who judged this show off this excerpt on the Tonys. I keep telling them to see the whole thing from the PBS special because it's incredible. Personally, this excerpt really turned me on when I first saw it.
This is on of the best musicals I've ever seen!!! Please do yourself a favor and rent the DVD on netflix. If musicals are not your thing, this is the musical for you.Whoopi looks great!
i love this!! i just saw it on-demand. does it remind anyone else of spring awakening? between the lighting and this song, they remind me of each other. i love both!!
The song is about when he lived in Amsterdam and how people are so much more trusting of others in Amsterdam then America and the acccent is supposed to be of a woman who asked him to stay at her house and offered him the keys to the house.
I don't really like this proformance... I saw and loved the musical, I'm not trying to bash it, but this proformance of it just seemed kind of botched and half-hearted...
when i first saw this on the tonys, i thought it was so odd and alienating, and didnt like it at all. then i saw the show and thought the show was totally incredible. i'm not sure, looking back, what they could have done to make a tony performance that could have stood alone and been powerful - this was thrilling in the context of the show but strange otherwise. anyway - props to this show. i hope it has a lengthy regional life. it's truly incredible.
it wasn't bad...but i felt the music just wasn't well placed. It honestly felt like the songs were rock songs placed blindly into a show, rather than the show being built around the music. I enjoyed the show, but it wasn't the greatest thing ive seen.
same lighting designer...band onstage...narrative interjected by rock music...staging focused around manipluating chairs...it's not that much of a stretch.
David Hyde Pierce totally wanted to be up dancing! Hehe.

2:21 - "take mine now..." what is that accent!? and where did it come from :-S
iamadramastudent 3 years ago
It sounds about as "Dutch" as you can get to me! Probably because they are supposed to be in Amsterdam, Holland!
macrent2 3 years ago
I take it you haven't been to holland! my father lives there and to me...the accent went crazily British for a word or 2 here and there.. :-S
iamadramastudent 3 years ago
I have been to Holland and I still think it sounds Dutch.
macrent2 3 years ago
Fair enough, we shall agree to disagree :-)everybody to their own, after all.

I'm dutch. It doesn't sound Dutch.

This looks oddly similar to Spring Awakening...

Uhm, they have absolutely nothing in common. How do you even remotely see that?

Yes both of the bands are onstage but in Passing Strange it is more of a focal point.
Acejunior215 3 years ago
yea the story it self is not the same. But every thing else that happens is kinda spring awakening related.
killxyaslynn24 3 years ago
He didn't say they sound the same. He said they LOOK the same. And they kinda do ...
The music and story had nothing to do with his comment. :)
