I was sitting in my 7th grade music class at 12:26 pm on the afternoon of 9/11/01 listening to this when I heard the news. Still gets to me even today.
Continuity issue! I didn't know that happened in cartoons but the clock on the first guy's bedside table is laying down in the initial shot but laying down in the following shot. Still a great movie though!
After a while, this whole sequence - the animation style, the music - grows on one quite a bit. I think this was one of the best segments to come out of Fantasia 2000.
Never knew why everything was blue in this video and then last year we played it in band, I discovered it was called rhapsody in BLUE and BAM musical epiphany!
Oh my god... I saw this when I was just a toddler, then they used the beginning of the song for the Glee New York episode and I swore I had heard it somewhere before. 10 years later I still recognized it, weird.
all the characters have names. the purple drummer is called Duke, the jobless guy is called jobless joe, the girl is called rachel and the guy with the red mo is called flying john
the first and last time i saw and head this was ten years ago. This song has been in my head since then but the name lost. which has bothered my till now~
@koyoteblue1998 The first Fantasia let the music speak much more, or how to explain it... and it was more visually appealing. However, Firebird was the only truly great piece Fantasia 2000 had to offer, at least visually :)
@6HagareNo6Yumi6 I disagree. Fantasia certainly had a great many wonderful pieces in it (Nutcracker Suite, Ave Maria) but that's no reason to pretend like Fantasia 2000 didn't have some wonderful pieces also. This one actually moved me to tears the first time I saw it (in my twenties) and the Toy Soldier sequence was pretty visually appealing (I loved the artistic style-- the geometric quality of the jack-in-the-box and the soldier and the play of light and color).
Last year, Ray Coussins visited our school for the big musical performance we put on. He wanted to be part of it, which was awesome. We played this, and he tore it up on piano.
He used no sheet music, and played it all by ear/memory. It was amazing. Instantly fell in love with the piece.
yesterday i was tinkering on the piano and i was like "i love the way this sounds" then i noticed it sounded like the chorus for this piece. (sorry if i got my terminology wrong)
@doomgiver234 I'm guessing because that this clip was set in 1930s New York (which was where the song was written) and the shop is owned by a Jewish person
I remember watching this in preschool and among the other things that I watched like god knows what I remember two movies and a couple of shows. The first is this one I don't really know why but I remember it vagely. Another is some movies with a dragon and in the end some witch takes a teardrop from some girl and completes a potion and there was also a dragon if I remember vagely. early memeories are the ones that lay a foundation for the rest of your life no matter how insignfigant.
This was the only good piece in Fantasia 2000. Not only was the musical selection good, but the animation in it is top notch. It's very stylistic to the song; taking nothing away from it while also adding to it with its smooth curves and overall simplicity. On top of that, you have four stories all being told within this one segment, each giving enough information and each just as entertaining as the others. This is also the only piece to really pull off emotion. It's brilliant.
@tricky317 Weather they did or didn't, this is still the only piece that was pulled off brilliantly in 2000. None of the others can even compare to this.
This is the most unique segment of fantasia cuz this is reality- the dynamics of urban areas/city life. This is not fantasy and theres no fictional things here. Nevertheless, the music is great, so lively.
@LedHead0501 -I don't know either, but it's a work of genius. And whoever thought of using Al Hirschfeld's cartoon style for the animation knew what he or she was doing too.
i love all the different characters in this, how they all have their own lives and problems, and how they all end up happy. I also love how absolutely everything that's going on matches the music PERFECTLY. Amazing :)
normaly, i love (hard) rock, but this song... GREAT! love to turn op my volume and sing like : PANANANANANNANANANAAAANAANANAANAANA with the melody . Love it
The old classic and emotional classics are evn better. yeah sure the cartoon isnt as 'high tech' or digitally HD or watever. BUT they are so beautiful and so good.
The emotion one company and power they can use with music no sound and just clever animation is insppiring. :/ If i have kids i don't want to have to show them the pixar but show them these 'cartoon' things that will soon be forgotton by the world. :(
I dunno.. I strongly believe that the classics of 2D, and the innovation of 3D can co-exisit and children of future generations will be able to appreciate them both :) I love the timeless disney classics, but change is good too (pixar)
@PlayingWithWordsXD Impossible. They cannot be forgotten as long as there are people like us who show the old and GOOD disney pieces before it became this new age crap. (Not including pixar, ghibli, or any other animation studio)
@PlayingWithWordsXD -3- You know I never could stand the feeble arguments. Art is in EVERY animation whether its traditional or computer. Actually computer animation is USED in traditional to surpass boundaries that would be very difficult to do by hand...and you had no idea of it. So don't diss an art form...diss the creative minds that doesn't produce engaging storylines, which ISN'T Pixar. They can spend a year...perfecting a storyline, because it's muy importante. =3= the end
@nekoneko109 I never said there wasn't art in pixar or any animation. I'm just saying in my opinion I find the classic cartoons far more engaging. I love pixar aswell, i'm actually talking, if you had read my comment more carefully, about how disney or any other company doesn't do cartoons anymore I wasn't DISSING any art form, I was dissing at the fact one wonderful art form wasn't there anymore. Cartoons are magical things, i'm sure thats why you were watching it too.
@PlayingWithWordsXD They're still making 2D animation, it's just not as prevalent as 3D animation. The Frog and the Princess, while not being the best example, was their most recent 2D animated film. I agree with you - I much prefer 2D over 3D any day. I often find that the more money they put into effects, the less thought they put into actual the story. That's why I prefer dreamworks 3D animation over pixar - there's actually more narrative depth in their 3D films than pixar.
@PlayingWithWordsXD I understand what you're getting at, but Toy Story by Pixar was the first movie completely animated by computers. Personally, I think they were innovative and exploring a new way to express their art and story. Art is art whether a woodcut, painting, mosaic, or whatever! Love anything for what it is worth so long as it is still beautiful
I got a chance to see this performed by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra last night in Central Park and as I laid on the grass looking into the blue sky listening to the orchestra play, I remembered of the first time watching this video when I was 10 or 11 (10 years ago) and the happiness I received from the memory of the music reminded me a reason why I am a music educator today.
Each key has a different emotion attached to it. All minor keys aren't as bright and sweet as major keys, but some are dark, some sad, some angry, some bittersweet. Changing the key is changing the feel and emotion behind the piece.

yes, I checked my volume settings to see if they'd wiggled while I wasn't watching. But it ends in the middle of a note and a phrase? (Poor little girl!)
The trains are no way near as bad as the London Underground, it is even further underground it was the first underground so it is the oldest and in summer in stinks the most and is the most cramped by far.
At that part, it's actually the trombone. But French horns were used in the ensemble. it was one of the first pieces to have strings and french horns, making a literal "jazz orchestra".

The trains are no way near as bad as the London Underground, it is even further underground it was the first underground so it is the oldest and in summer in stinks the most and is the most cramped by far.

At 3:30, is that the French Horn with the melody or some other brass instrument?
schreiberbj 1 year ago
@schreiberbj
At that part, it's actually the trombone. But French horns were used in the ensemble. it was one of the first pieces to have strings and french horns, making a literal "jazz orchestra".

I remember watching this when I was really little. This was my favorite song from Fantasia 2000. Watching this now brings back LOTS of memories... :)
LilMissSunshine956 1 year ago
This is doctored. The Fantasia 2000 version (as well as the original version) is lowered than this.
