Gotta love it Shawn. The 'finish' is where it all 'starts' from. Guess that's the reason you urge us to start in our finish and let our arm-club unit 'fall into our backswing'. After watching this video I realized that I was lunging forward into a finish, rather than letting momentum bring me up into the finish.
I must have watched at least 50 of these and I also purchased Shawn's new 5 DVD series in support of his cause. I urge you to do so too.
What a wonderful teacher. Yes momentum carries me to the finish - that's the missing piece for me. As a chiropractor I love Shawn's references to the nervous system, his use of a skeleton to show us what's anatomically possible. Don't know why I didn't find these videos before - perhaps the saying 'When the student is ready' is - so true.
When properly braced against the left side, the only place for the arms to go is up! See "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update" and "golf pro lesson get more power and club speed" Shawn
Your videos are of great help and helps me to correct and fine tune my swing.
I see an issue with the way I finish. In my finish, my shoulders are not inline with midsection. I see that my upperbody is little behind, which makes a reverse "c" [ ) ] and cos of that finish,I see that i take lot of pressure on my back.
So I would like to know, is it a mistake to end up in that position? If yes, could you tell me where am I going wrong and how do I correct it.
A great way to feel the correct brace is in the "golf pro lesson one leg swing no weightshift" video; then see "golf pro lesson leverage power uphill";
My finish position felt manipulated because it was my only focus on the range 20 minutes ago. It worked like a charm, got the smash back, and straight shots.
But my back foot stayed down until after impact, even though I felt it was manipulated, so I guess its okay?
Back foot will stay down easily when you maintain tilt in the downswing (right leg stays as support system for the head in the downswing) and especially when you have enough backswing to effortlessly whip the snot out of the club to the target without feeling the need to thrust with the right side!
I think I didn't write it clearly enough the last time.
I felt I was manipulating the finish, with having that as my only forward. It felt like I was raising my foot to get to the finish as I swung trough. But I noticed the foot stayed down, even though it didn't feel like it.
I guess here comes the importance of feel versus fact.
I think maybe the focus of getting to the finish no matter what forced my body to not sway, because then it would be "impossible " to get there.
HMMM; sounds like you are trying to keep the head down too long and are not allowing the body to get out of the way of the arm motion; see how you do with either a heavy club or with weighted training gloves like in the "Golf Pro Lesson Nike Heavy Gloves" part 1 and 2 video; see also the "Golf Pro lesson "timing and tempo update" video for a free arm swing into the finish; Shawn
Shawn, I was wondering about your comment about the back foot staying down. I notice with irons, a lot of the professionals do what your saying. With the Driver. however i notice some lift in their back foot like Adam Scott and Tiger Woods as examples. I'm just curious if you could give a explanation. Obviously, the driver is longer, so is the pull different because of that?
If that back foot is coming off, it means there is a compensation going on or some extra thrusting to try and promote more juice coming through; have a look at my "Golf Pro Lesson Leverage Power" video for more on this; Shawn
Well, i have been looking around and found out that the right heel coming off the ground in the downswing with the driver is used to delay the wrists. Do you agree with this?
As a beginner the videos that you have posted have been great at helping me progress, so thank you very much.
One quick question, when i finish a full swing my club always seems to end up in quite a vertical position out in front me, rather than wrapping around the back of my head. Is this something i need to alter or not?
A very appreciative note from Italy. As a non athletic 50 y/old high handicapper, it's amazing how I could finally understand and "feel" a dinamic and balaced swing with a square impact. Golf teachers do not generally tell you that 80% happens passively. You are excellent in explaining the technical reasons without making it "mechanical". You gave me the real keys to allow my body to learn by feel, with so much more clubhead velocity but relaxed tempo, and looking good!
It is actually a game where we try to wrap the horse shoe around a metal stake in the ground at about 10 paces away using an underhanded toss technique like in softball...great for beach parties and for short game practice!
You are either keeping your head down too long or thrusting too much with the hips and legs or sliding in the backswing...Check out the "Golf Pro Lesson Leverage Power" video...Shawn
Great video! Very helpful and entertaining. I love them. Thank you for doing this! My finish position has been bad, it's really hard for me to stay at the finishing posture after the swing. It feels really awkward. I think maybe it's because I didn't turn my body enough.
Most people who tell me this about their finish are not tilted enough from address through impact; go to my website at shawnclementgolf dot com and watch the following: "Fine Tuning the best drill", "proper spine tilt", "Braced Tilt", "Through the Ball"; and let me know how you do! Shawn
No worries here; as long as you feel that you can crush that can under that left foot at the end without any strain on the hip or the ankle; the foot print is on the outer half of the foot so if it rolls just a bit that is fine! Great comment, Thanks! Shawn
Golf seems to be so easy when I watch your videos. I have just discovered them and I cannot prevent myself to look at all of them, one after the other. I've just discovered them and I can't stand watching all of them. If only I had a great teacher like you in France where I live. Thank you so much. (Sorry for my bad english)
I play golf in the mid 90s, I have read a lot of books, and watch zillions of videos, but finally I found you videos, and let me tell your, they are great and easy to follow. The key here is to play and get back to watch the videos again, specially the ones that correct our faults in the field,
mr 'swisstrader' im pretty certain mr clement is a much better golfer than you. i personally believe that shawn is one of, if not the best instructor i have ever come across. everything he says and talks about is sensical and has helped my, and from what i can gather everbody else's, golf swing. and yes, he does talk alot about balance, but each instructor/teacher have their own specific piece that they focus on. shawn's is obviously balance.
One of the worst swings I've seen in years. I don't even know where to begin, but for starters, on the backswing, his right knee comes completely out of position and does what every pro avoids looks to avoid doing. Even his finish looks like no pro I've ever seen. Finally, what's the message here except stay in balance??
Shawn, pay no attention to the comment above. You have received nothing but praise on all of your videos and 5 star ratings. I believe you are a diamond in the rough.

Shawn, The finish to all your swings seems to be just left of your head as opposed to more around your neck. Is there a reason for this?

As long as the feel that got you there is the effortless and powerful whip through the ball and to the target! :)

aren't you supposed to thrust with the hips when hitting the iron? or is it just a lateral movement of the hips?

I love your "balance" and "gravity" things because it sounds so natural and efficient to me.
coramdeojee 4 years ago
is it therefore important to know what your finish position looks like? or is the finish just a result of how the swing transpired
pecky1234 4 years ago
Both! And you should especially feel what it should be so your brain has a direct link to it! It truly is the tuning fork of the swing;
