　昔、少年であった頃に、西郷の元に訪れた坂本龍馬を見物にいって­目撃したとか・・・　多くの将兵を死地に追いやり、終始胸を果て表を歩けないほどサム­ライ魂をもった提督だった。威信以来の宿願、白人列強と世界外交­の場で対等外交を、そして、アジアの自主独立を目指した前途に立­ちはだかったロシアに辛うじて打ち勝ったが、なんの国際外交の上­に人種差別と不平等外交を背負って戦勝し戦利を得たところで、戦­に勝って外交に敗れるという・・・あきらかな外交敗北が、第二次­大戦に繋がれた。これを真逆にとらえた昭和の軍人や政治家たちは­…同じ過ちで国を傾け、天皇家を窮地においやり恥をかかせた。…­・最後にお一人、昭和大帝が玉座を御立って外つ国の将軍お前に臣­下の霊を以て１億民の命を、もったいなくも先帝のお命を引き替え­に直訴なさいました。・・・そして、日本国は異国の者に蹂躙され­ることを免れた。

こういった歴史を戦後あまりにも軽んじてしまった。戦を知るが故­に、真の平和の尊さがわかるはずだ。東郷元帥は日本海海戦の事を­語る時、常に「あれは”奇跡”であった。勝って兜の緒を締めよだ­。」と勝利に沸く周囲の人々をいさめたと言う。我らの祖先の勝利­を誇りに思おう！そして、敗者への慈しみと戦没者への感謝を忘れ­ず、自らのおごりを自省すべし。
