This song was written during World War 2, and he was referring to the people of the United States. Wages cannot be raised artificially - they respond to the market. At the moment wages are being depressed by the downward cycle in the economy.

Try Paul Mattick "Business as Usual", which sums up the current state of capitialism perfectly!
Read your history, HomestarAK. Guthrie was opposed to Fascists both abroad and at home, and wrote songs to support those views. He was pro-Union and associated with American socialists and their efforts to create a more equitable nation. It's doubtful he would have been associated with you.

Wages cannot be raised artificially - they respond to the market. At the moment wages are being depressed by the downward cycle in the economy.
I get my economics from Marx and some Marxists. Their analysis of the capitalist system is profound whereas most of today's 'economists' haven't a clue - they are more like astrologists trying to predict the future. Try Paul Mattick "Business as Usual", which sums up the current state of capitialism perfectly!

Read your history, HomestarAK. Guthrie was opposed to Fascists both abroad and at home, and wrote songs to support those views. He was pro-Union and associated with American socialists and their efforts to create a more equitable nation. It's doubtful he would have been associated with you.

By "Union," he was speaking of the United State of America and the Allied forces including Russia, England, Free China etc, not a bunch of whiney bitching labor unions, boys and girls. And by Fascists, he was talking about Mussolini and Axis powers.

Unions are still a vital and important institution, but the union of today is nothing compared to the unions of yesterday. We need to get more active in our unions and bolster them with good, hard working people who actually try to give their best while at work, and when not at work - say, when about to retire, do not accept shit new provisions to the existing contracts so they can make off with a sweet extra while burning the bridge for future workers. If the unions fail, it's because we failed

See Ron Paul's Myspace page when I noticed his favorite was Guthrie. I don't like the corruption that arises from the unions who use their power not for the benefit of the union members, but are in bed with the corporations and dirty politicians .
