  • chill out on comparing bob dylan to woody. two different people with two different views on society. no need for the debate now

  • When was this song written?

  • "In all corners of the globe, the worker's slogan is this: Speak to fascist in the language of fire, in words of bullets, with the sharp wit of the bayonet!"

  • People are confused as to what Fascism, & Communism are. They are not interchangeable. All you kiddies who have a Political Science minor need to ask for your parents money back from your 20k a year private schools.

  • @Luckmann

I think of Woody as an anarchist.

    That is all.

  • @Mshrms He was a "fellow traveler" of the communist movement.

  • @Luckmann This song was written during WWII and he is "clearly" referring to the United States. He probably was doing his best to rally union men to the cause of fighting right wing totalitarianism. So what? Leave it to you Bund loving teabaggers to try and tear down a real American hero.

  • @Luckmann Of course it's pro-unionist. Specifically, the Union, as in the proper noun, as in the United States of America. This song was written during World War 2, and he was referring to the people of the United States. Guthrie himself was pro-labor union as well, because he cared enough about his fellow man to understand how important things like safety regulations and the minimum wage were, but that's not what this song is about at all.

  • @Luckmann Join the IWW.

  • @Luckmann You can be a pro-unionist anarchist. You've heard of the CNT in Spain right?

  • anyone know the chords progression?

  • Fascists come in many forms.

  • Damn proud to be an Okie!

  • "This machine kills fascists."

  • Guthrie was far more radical than Dylan

  • @troykivey no kidding

  • @troykivey I'm pretty sure Dylan would completely agree with that statement.

  • John Henry!

  • This is a version of "John Henry"!

    Chords are: C - F - C - F - C - G -C

Greetings from Spain, from a Woody Guthrie´s fan. AND GOD BLESS THIS AMERICA

  • how do you pronounce guthrie again?

  • @picklepie159 guth-ree

  • A. Lincoln, Gen. Smedley D. Butler, D. D. Eisenhower.... essentially were echoing Woody. Sadly, no one is listening, they're all watch the Food Network and Dancing with the Stars.

  • the U.s.a. To my recall still fly a jolly rodger. no?

  • @gilliancarson it's john henry

  • American buisness' sold the nazis alot things that help build they're armies..so we sold them their material,so they could build their armies,so we could go to war with them..am i wrong?

  • I did always think the Union he was talking about was the Union of American states, it makes more sense in the context of the song. I mean American wasn't Spain, the trade unions didn't have armies that were literally fighting the fascists.

  • @HomestarAK Guthrie was a communist. Why don't you go ahead and listen to "Better World A-Comin'"

  • Thumbs up if you believe in the dignity of the working man!

    Death to Fascists!

  • @LittleDrummerGrrl96 Yes, and to let them have dignity they have to control their production!

  • communism and some labor unions can also be related to gangster fascists!

  • @cordfluidnevoie I wish the Unions were as powerful as the conservatives have convinced their idiot lemming followers they were.

  • @815Sox sometimes they are way more powerful. never forget that only work can bring wealth..

  • ANTIFASCISTA SEMPRE ITALI

  • Anti-fa Belgium!

  • Anti-fascist and anti-Capitalism, capitalism is a liberal "fascist" ideology...fascism is not a big problem longer, capitalism are !

  • @MrRanger654 "Fascism is capitalism in decay".

  • @Sydwayman Communism is capitalism in decay.

  • @keysersozae Communism is inevitable.

  • @Sydwayman @keysersozae any kind of Socialism is..se germany for ex. destroied by a war starving.. there was only two ways for them.. the so called left or the so called right.. just another form of corporativist imperialism camouflaged by either stupid ideology.

  • @cordfluidnevoie If you are referring to NAZI Germany as socialist, then you are sadly mistaken. NAZI Germany was fascist. A dictatorship, and joining of corporate power with the state. In fascist countries, corporations of the same industries band together to fight for their interests. Socialism is worker control over the state, and state control of production and distribution. You can't have socialism without democracy.

  • @Sydwayman fascism is a modified form of socialism. That is why Nazism is called "National Socialism". Mussolini, who concocted fascism, was a Communist and claimed so to his dying day! He saw the weaknesses of Marxist thinking as far as it's ability to advance socialism worldwide. Fascism is an effort to advance Socialism on the national level so that eventually it will advance all over the world. Read more books!

  • @thorpypoo Mussolini began as a socialist; but later denounced socialism and lead the Fascist violence against the socialist workers of Italy. He never claimed to be a communist; he was in fact very anti-communist in his speeches and policies. Fascism is the antithesis of socialism: fascism being pro-corporate, socialism being pro-worker. Fascism strengthens private property and corporate power; while socialism aims to hand the means of production to society.

  • @thorpypoo Ignorance.

  • @thorpypoo This is rubbish. Which books do you read? National Socialism had nothing to do with socialism it was just a name conjured up by Hitler and his goons. The British Labour Party called itself socialist (I'm not sure whether it still does - Blair expunged the word from their vocabulary) but has never been socialist. Neither was the USSR either socialist (or communist - Marx used the two words interchangeably).

  • @gefriolsaeme

The Labour Party is (and always has been) a non-Socialist party, with (some) Socialist members. The USSR most certainly were Socialists. For about ten years, at least.

  • @ignoranttwat How do you define socialist? I'd say a socialist society would be one where nations do not exist where money is only seen in museums and such a society can only exist on a world wide basis. Thus the USSR was never socialist.

Check out the World Socialist Movement.

  • @gefriolsaeme A good place for you to start is by reading "The Road to Serfdom" by Friedrich Hayek. It was written directly against the Nazis. In addition to that I would recommend Heaven on Earth: The Rise and Fall of Socialism by Joshua Muravchik and Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg all of which are very well documented works so if you have doubts it is relatively easy to fact check.

  • @thorpypoo Hayek I've read - free market or free for all and screw your fellow man in the pursut of profit

And Muravchik along with hundreds of others hasn't a clue about what socialism is! Lenin - socialist? Ha! Ha!

  • @gefriolsaeme I don't think you have read Hayek or else you would know that Hayek was not totally against social insurances when it is feasible. I think you are a liar.

  • @thorpypoo I read Hayek years ago and years ago realised he was merely tinkering with captialism to justify it to the rampant free marketeers. I'd rather see captialism confined to the rubbish bin of history. It and religion have done nothing but destroy millions of humans. It is a malicious 'system' and only serves a few.

  • @gefriolsaeme Actually religion does not cause wars as is supposed by Marxists. Politics causes wars. Capitalism does not serve only a few. It allows the greatest prosperity for the greatest number of people who are then able to care for their friends and family. Socialism makes people dependent on the state, removes motivation to achieve, and keeps the greatest number of people poor. Also, it is stealing. You premises concerning capitalism are simply false.

  • @thorpypoo Religion is one of the props of capitalism. They are very cosy together.

State - socialism? An oxymoron. Socialism will free people from the suffocation of the state and allow them to grow as humans. Since around 500m people are currently suffering from malnutrion capitalism is doing a great job. Please don't quote me USSR China etc - they were merely state - captialist nations of a particularly nasty type (are America and some of its allies moving in that direction?)

  • @gefriolsaeme Religion predates capitalism so I don't know how any rational person would think that religion and capitalism are related. It sounds like to me you are in the odd position of being a left wing anarchist which makes you simultaneously on the left and the right. The Fascists would have loved you. At any rate, Statism is necessary for Socialism because socialism denies man's true nature which is evil. Capitalism puts human nature to use for good and allows freedom.

  • @thorpypoo Money also predates capitialism but making it is the driving force behind capitialism.

Statism is neede by capitalism but not by socialism. Capitialism enslaves!! Man's nature is evil? Who said that? God?

  • @gefriolsaeme Yes actually. Also Socialism enslaves, not capitalism. Statism kills capitalism. Capitalism only works in a free society. Socialism prevents the "pie" from growing, capitalism makes the "pie" bigger! And you are an uneducated fool. I will bet you didn't even know I used the fallacy of ad hominem attack there at the end.

  • @gefriolsaeme I would bet that you would say it is wrong if someone murdered you, lied to you, or slept with your wife (that I doubt you have), or got angry with you without cause. I guarantee that you have lied, committed some form of sexual immorality, stolen, and murdered in your mind because everyone has. Yes, human nature is evil, which is why government exists in the first place genius.

  • @gefriolsaeme Are you on welfare? You sound like a lazy bum who never really made an effort at bettering yourself and family. Kind of like my wife's Marxist uncle. What an idiot. He acts like he knows everything about everything and never even left Germany!

  • @thorpypoo I have a good job and I have a PhD. But I know if my job becomes surplus to the capitialist system I could end up homeless.

I don't presume to know much at all...

  • @gefriolsaeme Okay, so you are either a professor or a bureaucrat, both of which are not real jobs. They are gravy trains and you are sucking the life out of the economy. I wish they would take all the Socialists of all stripes and give them a country of their own where they are not allowed to leave so the rest of us can live and work in peace without having to worry about the Gestapo showing up at the door to take our guns and burn our books.

  • @thorpypoo Neither professor or bureaucrat! As I said socialists know no country!! You need a gun to protect you from what? The have nots within the capitialist state!!

  • @gefriolsaeme 1. Where did you get your Phd and in what? 2. I am the have nots. I make ten dollars an hour in a country that uses the Euro and the German state steals half of my wife's income to give to socialists who do not want to work. 3. I need to protect myself from criminals because human beings are by nature sinful and tyrannical government because human beings are sinful by nature. Did you know there was a time in Great Britain where everyone had to be armed by law?

  • @gefriolsaeme Did I mention one of those socialists who do not want to work is her uncle? Is it just that my wife has to pay for her lazy uncle's wine and cigarettes?

  • @gefriolsaeme Is it just that my wife would not only make twice as much money in America and pay about 20% less in taxes just because of the influence of socialistic thinkers on German society? No sir, I am the have nots and you are the ignorant chattering class that is oppressing me and doing everything you can to spread ignorance and stupidity! No facts will change the mind of a leftist. Their only come back is Marxist slogans.

  • @thorpypoo Hey! I don't even have a picture of Marx on my wall! I hate speaking in slogans. I live in Britain and as you may know taxation here is sky high. But it is capitialism that controls the level of wages etc not the chattering classes - they just chatter about how much they are hard done by!

  • @gefriolsaeme Yet you have done nothing but repeat Marxist clichés. It doesn't matter about the wages. Capitalism allows social mobility, however, the leftist policies that cause the high taxation take more of your money so that you no longer have it and then take away incentive to try and get into the next tax bracket. I see it in Germany too. Germany is socialism within a capitalist context which means they have not totally dumped Fascism (neither has the USA).

  • @gefriolsaeme Even if you were to artificially raise wages it would do no good because then those wages just loose value. I recommend you read a book calle "Economic Facts and Fallacies" by Thomas Sowell because you don't understand jack diddly squat about Economics. I notice you have refused to say what your PhD is in and from.

  • @thorpypoo PhD in history.

Wages cannot be raised artificially - they respond to the market. At the moment wages are being depressed by the downward cycle in the economy.

I get my economics from Marx and some Marxists. Their analysis of the capitalist system is profound whereas most of today's 'economists' haven't a clue - they are more like astrologists trying to predict the future. Try Paul Mattick "Business as Usual", which sums up the current state of capitialism perfectly!

  • @HomestarAK all historically true. but if woody lived today, he would be singing the same songs about different people

  • @HomestarAK Wrong. Woody was a lifetime supporter of labor unions. Facists are what labor unions fought against in the past and hopefully they'll do so in the future

  • @Mshrms True that, he sings about the Teamsters in other songs.

  • @Mshrms They fought against fascists and corporations xD

  • @HomestarAK going to come here every day for the next year just to dislike your comment

  • @HomestarAK loool he is singing about WWII but I think you being dogmatic. How you also address unions means your obviously a right wing camp that hates on them. But the subtext of this and the other facist song he done still have multiple meanings in this day and age. along with a lot of his other songs because he lived through the great depression.

  • @HomestarAK So the Union workers in Woodys time were whiny and bitchy because they worked 14 hours a day 7 days a week in hellish conditions where many of them died on the job just to make ends meet, and they wanted fair pay?

You know, us working class folk are people believe it or not, we have our own lives, yeah work is important, but working class people live for other reasons that to work every waking moment so some fat cat can sit on his ass and count his money all day.

  • @HomestarAK You just went full retard, dude.

  • @HomestarAK You need to learn more about Woody Guthrie.

  • @HomestarAK wow you're pathetic

  • @HomestarAK

lol you know nothing, do you?

  • @HomestarAK Thousands just witnessed your ignorance how does it feel?

  • @HomestarAK

"the best thing that I did in 1936 was to sign up with the Communist Party."

-Woody Guthrie, My Constitution and Me

  • @HomestarAK Woody Guthrie was an open anarchist, radical leftist, and trade unionist, and a substantial portion of his work is based on that viewpoint. He wrote songs in honor of Sacco & Vanzetti, fer chrissakes. To try to depoliticize him is to ignore and dishonor his entire career, and I don't imagine he'd care for that one bit.

  • Unions created the middle class.

  • Antifa Albania

  • Unions are still a vital and important institution, but the union of today is nothing compared to the unions of yesterday. We need to get more active in our unions and bolster them with good, hard working people who actually try to give their best while at work, and when not at work - say, when about to retire, do not accept shit new provisions to the existing contracts so they can make off with a sweet extra while burning the bridge for future workers. If the unions fail, it's because we failed

  • @horsesflu Well said!

  • @Freethinker12341 I guess you don't read or listen to Ron Paul. He has stated that he is against force - as in being forced to join unions. See Ron Paul's Myspace page when I noticed his favorite was Guthrie. I don't like the corruption that arises from the unions who use their power not for the benefit of the union members, but are in bed with the corporations and dirty politicians .

  • @Freethinker12341 Ron Paul will save America!! Liberty is what he stands for. The idea of liberty shall never be defeated

  • @sibkiss2009 Ron Paul is a corporate fascist

  • @Freethinker12341 There is a saying going around, when Corporate Fascists lay down, they don't look under their beds for monsters, they look for Ron Paul! LOL
