Umm... let's not anthropomorphize this animal. It's a wild animal that doesn't need anyone to 'take care of him'. If anything, this animal should have been killed long ago by natural predators or from falling out of a tree. I suspect it probably has a parasite or some disease that affects motor function, not narcolepsy.
Probably a neurological condition. I raised a baby squirrel almost from birth who had a similar condition. He would have small seizures any time he tried to eat. The only way he could eat until he was about two months old was laying on his side like this squirrel seems to be doing. He eventually outgrew it, but it seems as though this one has not.
It looks like the poor little fellow suffers from Narcolepsy and Cataplexy - these two Neurological disorders are almost always combined. Cataplexy is brought on by strong emotion, eg shock, excitement, anger etc and results in the sufferer losing total muscular control of their body (whilst remaining fully conscious). It usually lasts only for a matter of seconds. It seems that the squirrel is so excited about eating the nuts it triggers an attack!
Narcolepsy in animals is usually triggered by excitement over food - hence his little episode while eating. :] Don't feel bad for giggling, narcolepsy doesn't affect them living a normal life besides the slight interruptions.
how can that squirrel have survived that long in nature without being eaten...? If a predator is after him, the narcoplepsy won't really let the squirrel get very far...
@1234gimmeascream Depends on where the posters live. If there isn't much in the way of natural predators there then the Squirrel is fine, well as fine as can be. Most suburban and urban areas where you still have lots of squirrels often don't have many real predators left except for the occasional raptor. Odds are this squirrel will get to live out a full life if he's made it this far.
@Triberius maah, didn't think of that... but damn, this shows how much we interfere with natural proceedings! even though i'm happy for that squirrel if it lives is an urban area :)
I know out where I live they have been trying to re-introduce a few types of predators, mainly Coyote. One of the big reasons was to help control the deer population since Coyote will hunt down and kill fawns. It just goes to show that outside of cities there is a lot we can do to help restore the natural balance, if we take the time to do so.
@Triberius yes, around where I usually go to in the holydays they have reintroduced wolfs to control the deers as well, but the farmers are afraid of them and shoot them down when they see one, they cannot believe that basically their dog behaves like a wolf which is used to humans. People should get informed about it, some think all wolfs are like in little red riding hood and will eat children.
did you built the woody house? its so sweet.. I think the squirrel can do better if it doesn't try and stand.. poor thing. Is that cause of human pollution again?
Rabies, ha-ha good one. Keep them coming... keep in mind though; over twenty hours of film to get two minutes for Youtube... Not Rabbies; Not a vampire who has trouble seeing during the day; and not squirrel aids "Squaids" either...
I have a resident squirrel with this problem - it is very saddening to observe. Its mother had the same thing, and died from a fall from a tree. I'm wondering if this is genetic or some communicable disease
Yes there are many many hours of film over a period of a few months to get two minutes of usable footage. I would think that if anything was done to the squirrel we would have got more footage.
Cerebellar Ataxia is a disorder of the cerebellum (the balance center of the brain) which controls balance and coordination. This squirrel is "usually" fine (the video is obviously cropped to the points where the squirrel falls over) and then suffers brief episodes in which there is a loss of control. Narcolepsy is a disorder not where the affected falls asleep, but temporarily experiences the same loss of control experienced during REM sleep while fully conscious; it might be narcolepsy.
I agree with the theory of the poor squirrel having cerebellar ataxia; the way it moves is almost identical to the movement of my disabled cat who has a similar genetic disorder known as cerebellar hypoplasia. In other words, animals suffering from either of these disorders have a very hard time controlling their movement and maintaining balance.
seed rot during some time and they develop alcohol; they just get drunk; same effects happen in Africa with some monkey and other animals that eat rotten fruits from the ground..
They are seizures, not Narcolepsy or as Mangina said, ear mites. You can see many instances where is lower body is doing something completely different than his upper body...
i´m a guy from germany and i tried to find out what this "narcoleptic" means, but google sucks and seems not to have the right answer.
how is this caused?stroke? and if so, did you try to get this little fella? i mean, being unable to stand or run off, makes him a pretty easy target for about anything.
as bad as I feel laughing, thats funny, its sad the poor little thing has got something wrong with it

I doubt this is narcolepsy, looks like it has a cerebellar ataxia, causing problems with balance, fine movements, and it seems to have a tremor.
Or you've given it poisoned food thats made it 'drunk'.
