  • Again, @ 5:55 the P-40 proves its worth. The P-51 was a thorough bred race horse. The P-47 was a flying tank. The P-40 was a working mans war plane. Not the fastest, not the toughest, but just kept on going when times got tough. It took a licking and kept on kicking. It faced off against almost every Axis fighter of the time due to it being about the only plane the US had in any real numbers to ship to Allies. It held the line when there was simply nothing else to be had. A real "Warhorse"...

  • When the Japanese representative for the government of Japan boarded the Battleship Missouri to sign the articles of surrender, ending WWII, he looked around at the assembled Allied officers. His first statement was, "Where is Chennault?".

  • What was the Japs thinking. Their new plane oscar, not armored. They didn`t lear a thing. Here is a classic example of light & cheap. You will get kill.

  • @canadadry0g The Oscar was newer than the Nate, but it was already in production by the time they started fighting U.S. aircraft, too late to make changes. And it wasn't so much a case of "light and cheap" as "light and fast". They were sacrificing armor for performance, not for cost. What they really needed, and lacked, was a stronger engine that could drive a heavier fighter.

  • @colindhowell The stronger engine was the Nakajima Homare 11,12,and 21 which produced about 2,000 hp. The engine equipped the later model Ki 43, Ki 44, and the great Ki 84.

  • @canadadry0g They were also much easier to produce. Instead of having an 8 fighter squad you could have 40. Just look at the raid on Pearl Harbor. It was successful because of the shear number of Japanese planes.

  • @ScientificExploits Actually, the Ki 43 was IJAAF and was not seen in the PTO because it was not a carrier based fighter such as the Reisen Kanjou Sentoki. The "Oscar" was a land based fighter and was used in the CBI. Also, it was difficult for Nakajima to make the airframes so not that many were produced compared with the P40.

  • That was a really good documentary

  • outstanding video documentary
