NBC doesn't care about anything but ratings. The majority of hispanic and african-american viewers, who were usually split between Leno and Letterman, were watching The Tonight Show when Conan hosted. Also many younger viewers who have never giving the Tonight Show a chance were finally tuning in. Of course NBC just cared about money and ratings. In a decade or two Leno's viewers will be too old or dying and Conan will be (according to the ratings) number one. He's already number 1 in my book.

Regardless of what you think of Leno (Lord knows I've been on Team Conan for 8 years), this was a great way to end the show. And it was just as great when Conan parodied it by having all the kids clearly resemble him, and then again by doing it with Hamsters.

Jay should not be blamed for what happened to Conan and for NBC asking him to return to The Tonight Show...Why wouldn't he jump at the chance to go back?...It's not like they wanted to keep Conan...I'm a big fan of Conan because I think he's a fantastic talk show host and very witty and spontaneously funny but, for whatever reason, he wasn't getting the kind of ratings that Jay got...Someone has to fill Conan's spot, and who better to do that than Jay who was consistently number 1 in the ratings

Hellawaitsu: Conan's ratings sucked at 11:30. Less than half of what Jay was pulling in with Tonight. They couldn't afford to lose money with Conan. Its a business you dumb ass. Conan was offered a later show but he would rather take NBC to the cleaners for $40M than work. Conan's humor was just too juvenile and the ratings reflected that.

@NewDirection4us Conan wasn't pulling the ratings NBC wanted because Jay's new show was so bad leading into the late local news which led into Conan. Even late local news stations around the country were complaining that their ratings were suffering because nobody wanted to watch Jay.

@doomroot13 Actually, Conan had the Tonight Show for a couple of months before Jay came on at the 10pm time slot. Conan's ratings were bad during those first two months and there was no Leno to blame it on. Leno's flop at 10pm just made matters worse. They could fire Leno at 10pm and let Conan stay at Tonight at 11:30 but that would not have solved the problem because Conan was a ratings disaster all along. The best thing they could do was to get Leno back on at 11:30 and pay off Conan.

@NewDirection4us Conan would have done well just like he did in late night. All he needed was time just like in late night. It was very similar to when Jay took over the Tonight show the first time. It took him a while to do well and take over the number one spot. I have no doubt Conan would have taken over the number one spot eventually because what he brought to the tonight show was originality and genuinely good comedy.

@doomroot13 You may be right, but NBC wasn't willing to wait more than the seven months they gave Conan because they had to fire Leno from the 10pm spot and they had to do something with him or face losing him. Conan was too much of a gamble that he would eventually pull better ratings, if it meant losing Leno in the meantime. Leno was worth so much to NBC that they were willing to pay Conan & staff $40 million to resolve the Conan problem at the Tonight Show and get Leno back.

His material is very original and his ability to continue his comedy instantaneously amidst his interviews is amazing. Conan's interviews are hilarious, that is where Leno lacks. Just because Conan is quirky and eccentric has no bearing on his intelligence or the intelligence level of his material. Your logical fallacies and about him and his viewers is laughable.

Why was there not more fanfare for Jay going off. Granted he didn't host as long as Johnny as was not as good (he wasen't) but no one was, is or ever will be. But you would think he would've had a big send off. I remember when Johnny left he wanted it to be very low key but it wasen't. It was a BIG DEAL! With Jay it was almost not even noticed. I like Jay a lot and wished they would have done a little more. Maybe it's cause Johnny was going forever and Jay is starting a new show?
