i don't know that fairness comes into it. it's based on the evidence and that could change with new fossils being uncovered all the time.

When Cristobal Colon and other explorers reached America(the continent) for the first time they thought they had circled the earth and reached India, that's why the natives where called "indios" (or indians in english). Then later, after the new world was identified as a new continent by Amerigo Vespucci, the northern natives were also called native americans I suppose by the British settlers sent there. But still to this day in the rest of America the name "indio" is still used.
