  • @MrWallerand Thanks very much. CGCF+CD

  • Adam...this is still my favourite version...thanks ever so much for posting it.

  • Is this your own composition (On the guitar)? Very Very Nice!

  • Beautiful song..beautiful cover.... excellent

  • @Sanctuary1952 thanks very much, you're very kind.

  • i have never heard this song before but you play it beautifully

  • Great performance Adam.. liked this version very much.. Mike

  • holy monkeynuts batman!!!

this is extremely good. The guitar is flawless and the vocals are honest, becuase if there is one thing I hate, it is singers who obviously have no connection to what they are singing.

5 stars, wish i could give six

  • Thanks Wiggy. Very kind of you.

  • beautiful.....

  • great song, great guitar, great job.

  • Great comment! Thanks

  • realy freakin good mad props

  • Thanks

  • I really like your version, I'd love to learn to play it like this. Good work, and Cheers!

  • Thanks, you can get the tab from Martin's website.

  • Nice playing and nice singing, too, I like it!

  • Thank you.

  • I don't know why people are complaining about your singing i think this song needs lyrics it's beautiful guitar by itself but the lyrics make it even better.

  • Very Kind

  • Brilliant..thanks for posting

  • Thank you.

  • Simply amazing. Absolutely great playing. The only MS song I can play is Betsy the Serving Maid...

Do you think you would be able to play Gone Fishing? Because I'd love to see you doing it.

  • I'm working up a new batch of songs which I will upload shortly. I might have a go at Gone Fishing after though. Thanks

  • Ah ok I look forward to those.

I've now learnt John Hardy and Gone Fishing - it's very fun to play.

  • Loved that, gave me the inspiration that you can do great piano songs on guitar play guitar man. Makes me jealous. If you have to work that hard on the strings, who has brains (and talent and education and bla bla) to sing. Would come to listen you any time. keep going.

(one of my favorite randy n songs too, and I am dutch, still wondering myself, so why did you choose it?Did you have the tabs?

Great. Keep posting, I am list'nin'

  • Hi, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I chose it because it's a Martin Simpson arrangement, and he's my guitar teacher. You can get the Tab from his website.

    Thanks

  • Superb playing.....is that a Sobell? Your voice is good, you just need to believe. A very long time ago I was told to find a point on the wall at the back of the room and sing to it. It worked..so sing out....it's great. Where do you play? I'd come to see you...

  • Fabulous playing mate and take no notice of the negatives re: the voice, we've all heard far worse in every folk club in the UK at least you hit the notes which is more than I can do. Besides, when you play like that, who the hell listens to the singing anyway.

  • Thanks, what a nice thing to say. As it happens I shall be at one of those very folk clubs singing worse than this next week!

  • Beautiful playing Adam, I'm learning fingerstyle and if I get half this good I'd be pretty damn chuffed with myself!

Just curious - are your Martin Simpson performances by-ear transcriptions, or have you been lucky enough to find tabs somewhere?

  • you don't need luck to find the tabs, just do what I did and buy the instruction videos that Martin has out. They come complete with tabs. Or you could do what I am saving up to do and join one of Martin's tutorial weekends in Shefield. He holds them every year usually in May.

  • class!! You play very well m8!

  • Thanks very much.

  • A good voice, a relaxed, tender way of playing such an emotional song.

I would pay good money to watch you play, sir, well done indeed.

  • You are very kind. Thank you.

  • with much respect-

could you please record this without singing

  • Ouch, I know I'm not Frank Sinatra...but that hurts!

  • simple misunderstanding-

the guitar playing is so lovely, I just wanted to listen to it without the vocal.

  • God - I wish I could play like that...

  • Thanks - what a nice thing to say!

  • Very nice.

The most tender version I've heard.

  • Thanks

  • Tres Bien! I love this song, and i love this version. Well played sir.

Since seeing this vid i've bought the tab from Martin Simpson's website and am enjoying playing, tis a beautiful version, so thanks for turning me onto it!

  • Some fine playing, I've enjoyed listening and watching the videos. I'm going to check them all out on your channel. Look forward to seeing some more sometime soon. Carl.

  • I really enjoyed the playing, I saw Martin with Eric Bibb a while ago. Amazing

  • Hi Adam,

Got your mail but my company blocks web mail (had to do it over my phone and it won't send a reply for some reason) so it's proving a real pain in the backside to reply properly so I'll have to do it tonight. Thanks!

  • Thanks Adam. I know what you mean, I'm in London as well but it was worth the journey up there to attend his workshop. I'm waiting for the tab for this at the moment and can't wait to have a crack at it!

  • Hi Adam! Nice piece of playing! What tuning do you use for this? Just recently been to one of Martins workshops which was mind blowing so it must be awesome to have him as a teacher!

  • The tuning for this is CGCF+CD (the same as Bareback to Bulhassocks). It is great having him for a teacher, but a long way to go for a lesson - I'm in London, he's in Sheffield - very inspirational though.

  • this is magnificent... one of my favorite songs, and my nw favorite version... and as an odd side note, if I ever have a son, I've ALWAYS wanted to name him Adam Grey... and I just stumbled onto your work today... hmmm... Anyhoo, amazing stuff!

  • sobells are indeed magnificent guitars, as someone who clearly knows his martin simpson could you posible do a video of martins version of icarus as it is my favourite song of all time and all vids of martin doing it were removed from youtube. i've got second row seats to see him in manchester on the 26th of june, cant wait!

  • Hi Tom - Done, although it's a bit slopy as I've not played Icarus for about 6 months.

  • It's a '95 Model 1 (I had an Indian Rosewood Model 0 - but sold it to buy this a couple of months ago). They're great guitars aren't they. Get a copy of this months Fretboard Journal if you haven't already - big articles on both Stefan & Martin.

    Adam

  • PS: Ive got a 99 Sobell Model 1, which model is that?

  • Hello Adam, great playing! I love Martin, he is, for me the finest player in the world. I've had the priviledge of taking a couple of his workshops when he lived in the states. You?. I was wondering if you have the tab for Bouree la Revolte and Louisiana 1927. Any help greatly appreciated. Matt

  • Thanks Matt, it's a lovely piece. Yes, Martin is tops for me too. I'm lucky enough to have him as my teacher - which is cool!

Sorry, I can't send you the TAB as Martin sells them, I guess that would be a bit like copying one of his CDs and posting it to you. Although the TAB isn't listed on his website, he has it, so drop him a line.
