Because CBS was holding out hope for a Kerry win in OH. Generally speaking, a 51-49 win even in a large state normally gets called when about 85% are in.
Also this was the 1st election after 2000 and no-one wanted to make a mistake like they did in calling Florida too early & having to retract. Also, CBS historically has always been the last network to call a state.
Kerry indicated when he conceeded Ohio and the election that there were 100,000 absentee votes remaining, and he would need to carry every single one to win the election. He knew he wouldn't, and that was why he conceded the next day.

The only thing that saved him was the balanced budgedt proposed by the Republican congress. Clinton was then forced to take a moderate stance on the issues.
Although Kerry would've won Ohio, he could've campaigned in Colorado and Missouri and Iowa. His first pick for VP was Dick Gephardt from MI, IO is a neighbouring purple state, and Colorado is his birth purple state which is gun loving like him. Had he aimed for winning those states, he would've won the election with or without Ohio. (He could also have had WV or NM, but that's being a bit generous.)
I agree. He should have stuck with his Gephardt pick. That would have carried Missouri and Iowa. That wins the election right there. I think Vilsack would have done the same thing as well, winning MO and IA. Right when Kerry announced he chose Edwards I knew he'd lose. Edwards truly may go down as the worst VP pick in history.
He got more votes in Colorado than any other Democrat.
What he should've done was pick a good VP, I think when Edwards lost to Cheney, that really put his side down. Had Kerry picked Gephardt, he would've carried Ohio, Iowa, Missouri and New Mexico. Maybe even Virginia, Arkansas and Colorado.
I think you're giving too much weight to a VP choice. Even Al Gore didn't carry his own state when he ran for Prez. So, I doubt Gebhardt would have mattered in the VP slot. I don't think it matters that he got more votes than other Dems in Colorado. It was an unwinnable state that by the end he had to stop putting money into. He only lost by 100,000 in Ohio, and the money could have mattered there. Curious why you think Gephardt is such an all-star? Edwards is just as popular I've found.
Yeah, but Edwards' performance in the VP debate was just embarressing and surely hurt the ticket. I doubt Gephardt would've done that.
Oh by the way, erm, search google video for "Kerry Ohio" I think you'll find a video where people say that Kerry won Ohio, Nevada, New Mexico and Iowa (and Florida, but I'm not sure).
I think you are talking about Obama. Obama is the one who cant do anything because he has no experience. Maybe his nice speeches on race, gender, etc. will help him make important decisions. I think not.
I have put up with an idiot for 8 years, I can put up with the Democratic equivalent for 4 more.
I thought we were talking about Florida. Oh well, I guess you realized you were wrong.
And this country does not honor the popular vote for the national elections. Get over it, he won by the system we have, and the system we always have. Winning in the "legal" system is not stealing an election. If Gore had been declared the winner, that would have been a "stolen election."
I totally agree. I used to be a MSNBC watcher programmed to hate fox/oreilly but when that inadequate idiot beat Hitlery in April I went to fox in search of obama bashing, but found only supremely fair and balanced coverage, unlike that slanted crap at the other three. oreilly makes my day.
