do you have any tips for my situation? I find that when I eq the vocals, they friggin shoot up into the red fast, and if I mix my beat down any more then it's not nearly loud enough.. do you have any tips for eqing and mixing vocals while keeping the beat so that it's loud enough?

If you mix mono track you know it sits exactly in the centre. You dont have to deal with phasing and some other issues.

I didn't find my freq. before hand, i always let my ears do the talking , using your ears when u mix is VERY important, trust them, they are your friends.Mess with the E.Q. until your ears tell you what to change.

nice vid! just to add to what he said - it's important to take out 1-2 dB at 4k on the instrument tracks to create a 'gap' for the vocals to stand out a bit more. Complimetary eq!
