what am i to take away from that film? i am used to folk tales being full of violence child abuse and really disturbingly dark subject matter, but what the hell was the point of all that? endure endless abuse, and you will live hapily ever after? should i get a blind woman her stick? set a hunchback fairy on fire? marry children? WTF?
I've got a reasonably weird question for everybody: Does anybody recognize the song being sung at the wedding? Is it a traditional Russian folk song, and if so, what is it called?
So...here's the question: If Pearl wasn't around, would Mike be a captive on the SOL or would he convince Bobo and Brain Guy to join them all in the theater? Whenever he's actually with the two of them, it turns into guy's night out.
It's weird, but this is another one of those films I really didn't mind that much. Maybe it was just that it had all kinds of mythological stuff in it, which I love, because it's certainly an example of why some stories are better told than seen. Whatever the reason, it didn't cause me the pain of most MST films, and they had a lot of great jokes for this one too.
Plus, nearly every line in the film was stinger material.
this one was very funny, one of the best episodes i have seen in a while. which probably makes this one of the worst they have ever viewed. and oh yeah, MERRY FFING CHRISTMAS!
Not that this is partcularly funny, but I like pointing out rare moments on the show. I think this is one of the few times the show ends without Mike on the SOL. I also think parts: the clonus horror MAY be the only movie not announced before mike (or joel) and the bots go into the theater.
I'd say the best ape movie was the original Planet of the Apes, but the only 'chimp' movie I've ever seen was Dustin Checks in. I thought it was pretty good, but then I was 4 or 5 when I saw it, so at that age I thought all movies were great.
Tom *furious*: You make me sick. Look, just forget it, you couple of morons. I'm cute. Okay? I'm cute like that scrawny little squarehead in the movie, but just forget it. The whole cute thing's in the crapper!
@SovanJedi - I agree. If I'd seen this or The Day the Earth Froze by themselves as a kid, I would've loved them, just as I did The Magic Pony. Not saying I'd have any idea what was going on, but I seem to be a sucker for Russo-Finnish faerie tales, nonetheless.
Sometimes I swear this show's almost too clever. For about the last 3 parts I was thinking that the moral of the story seems to be that ugly people are inherently evil, and here we are at the end, where Tom Servo paraphrases my very thought! Good call, boys!
Fairy-tales where witches live in magical houses on giant chicken legs, that walk around on command, employ Ents as henchmen, and own sleds that turn into pigs?
I know what you mean, as ridiculous as that movie was I couldn't help but be interested in the folklore. I don't think I'd watch the non-MST3K version though because if not for it I probably would have been annoyed by some parts that the commentary made funnier.
they refrained from commenting on the disturbing nature of the relationship between that bear face guy and the girl. i was waiting the whole movie for that.
@Tareltonlives By today's (and western standards), yeah, definitely. Keep in mind, though, for the time period and culture that this movie & tale were based in, women were married off when they were able to bear children; they were considered adults at menarche. Now the fact that the actress looks only about NINE, *that's* the creepy part.
hey, I've got plenty of friends who based their marriages on nothing. I WISH that was something that only happened in bad movies and fairy tales.
I think Servo may have been right when earlier in the episode he described marriage as a "dizzying existencial ride to nowhere." sounds a lot more plausible than Mike's "niceness is fun" argument.
@trapadoored Actually I think their relationship is based on their being more attractive than the other characters. And that he rescued her, (sort of) and that's %90 of fairy tale marriages, which are more substantial than some real ones.
I think it's both. Babushka is the traditional handkerchief, but I think it's also a standard nickname meaning 'granny'. My russian friend always called her grandmother that....
Oh how unfortunate! I suddenly made a peculiar parallel of Pearl and the boys to stepmother and the old man. I hope Pearl doesn't have Munchausen Bi Proxy Syndrome.
Nerd lesson! I think it's by proxy and I think proxy means by someone acting for another person. Munchausens is when someone pretends to be sick to get attention, so , I think Munchausens by proxy is like when someone pretends their child is sick to get attention. It's really weird and I actually don't entirely get the guys joke about it :-/
