@theangrypeter The reason Mario games exceed others (in so many people's opinions) is because Mario doesn't have swords or guns, he just has his ability to jump. Simplicity is the key- that same jump is how he gets around. Due to this dead simple system developers have (and take) the chance to fine-tune game play to perfection, which is why it's so fun to play, and in turn so popular. And the levels do not look the same to an unbiased mind, they're just simple and have a common style.
