I recently went to a Wrestling Reunion, and Bill Eadie(Masked Superstar)made comments on how todays wrestlers would have never made it back in the day. He wouldn't take his grand kids to any WWE event. Todays wrestlers can't do a promo if their lives depended on it. His feud with Mr.Wrestling 2 was very intense. Several times Wrestling 2 actually knocked him out with his famed knee lift, Mr. Eadie said. Georgia was his favorite area to wrestle because there wasn't a lot of traveling. Nice guy.
I read an internet interview with Eadie. He said that his fellow wrestlers couldn't go to dinner (Ricky Steamboat, Ric Flair, Blackjack Mulligan, Greg Valentine, etc.) without fans bothering them, while he and his family could go anywhere without fans suspecting a thing.
That is true. Eadie could leave the arena, take his mask off, and would not have any problems. The wrestlers you mentioned were always being "tested" by fans. Bill said that there 4 guys that you didn't want to "test" outside the ring. Dick Slater, Wahoo McDaniels, Harley Race, and "The Stomper" Archie Gouldie. Legit tough guys.
I was always told that The Sheik never broke character away from the ring, but Abdullah the Butcher & George "The Animal" Steele would talk to the fans if they saw them away from the ring.
In Ole Andersons book, he said that he almost fired Mark Lewin and Abdullah the Butcher for traveling together while they were feuding. A heel never signed autographs or talked to the fans. Ole was really pissed off at Mark Lewin for dressing the way he did. Mark was "GQ". Ole told him "if you are going to be the Maniac, dress like one." It makes sense. Look at Georgia Wrestling- Abdullah the face? Sullivan v Mansfield by Popculture stu. Look how Mark is dressed during the interview.
@mcfrs Many of today's wrestlers would have trouble because it was a diferent era. There were tougher standards and practices for television, there was Kayfabe, the product was sold as real competition...
you are correct. The wrestlers of old had to be able to get over without cussing and mostly naked divas.
Interesting that The Superstar would come back to Georgia full time in the summer of 1981 as a heel and win the National title from Steve O and feud with who else? Mr. Wrestling #2.
Yes, but he did feud with Mr. Wrestling II at first, but then The Super Destroyer came to Georgia and he and The Superstar began wearing identical masks. The Superstar would win the Georgia Heavyweight Title from Rich using the switcheroo.
Wrestling 2 was always a snappy dresser. His wife always traveled with him and during the winter she always wore a nice fur coat.

Gotta love Wrestling II's cardigan and tie. Must've been taking his grandkids out for ice cream after the interview!

Wrestling 2 didn't start feuding with Superstar until May of '82
MAY 16, 1982 (SUNDAY) -- ATLANTA, GA -- OMNI AUDITORIUM
(Paul Jones -- Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling)
Michael Hayes, Mr. Wrestling #2 & El Mongol d. Ray Stevens, the Masked Superstar & the Super Destroyer
JULY 18, 1982 (SUNDAY) -- ATLANTA, GA -- OMNI AUDITORIUM
Lumberjack Match: Mr. Wrestling #2 d. the Masked Superstar
This feud didn't last long. And it wasn't as hot as the '78 to '80 feud.
