I have a c4 in my 65 that probably needs a rebuild. I also have a rebuilt-ready to go- cruise-o-matic I could put in. Is it worth redoing the C4? Is it that much better? Car has a 352 2v.
I have always wondered why the 390 never really reached it's full potential ... it is an almost forgotten engine. Was it because Ford performance parts were scarce in the 60's? The 390 seemed to have vast potential as a big block monster but it was under-utilized everywhere except maybe in Stock Car racing. The popularity of the Chevy big blocks makes sense, but the almost complete discounting of the solid and reliable 390 doesn't. Why didn't the street guys use this engine more?
@hammerogod The 390 was never meant to be a race engine. Ford designed the 390 as a workhorse to power full-sized family cars, station wagons, pickup trucks and the like. The engine was good for its intended purpose, it was cheap, reliable, smooth, and produced good low end torque. It ended up in the Mustang, and other sporty cars by default. The competition was offering big-block muscle cars and Ford needed to respond. The 390 was the way to do it on the cheap.
@MrSloika like to disagree with you... Ford ran the 390 in nascar and if you look in the record books.. the 390 holds almost every record for NHRA in its class...
don't forget to show us your galaxie when it's completed. looks like you're doing a cmplete resto. a lot of work and money but it'll be worth it. a '62 is such a fine looking ford.
sounds good...what cam you running?..just finished my 66 tbird's 390...Comp Cam 268H cam and springs, lifters...4V Holley...sounds alot like your motor....what ignition advance?....thanks...
Thanks for the compliment. I haven't set the timing yet. I plan on doing that this summer. My cam is a Comp Cam also. I'll dig up the cam card in the next few days and let you know what it is.
Nice job. Couple of questions. Where did you purchase your upper radiator hose and did you make your own alternator brackets?
