Mike's voice is a little weak but holy shit the music is fucking brutal here. Seems even more raw, more intense than the album. I love it. Amazing live show for sure.

@trusodapop I know, something went really wrong between The Roundhouse Tapes and Watershed, he lost it. Even in parts of the Roundhouse Tapes you can hear it start to give out. :(
@MusicalMisanthropist yea.. i know.. but it still hurts me to see him struggling with it. as opeth is and has been my absolute favorite band for a long time.
@cubbex MMM, not true. It depends on whether or not the vocalist is growling correctly. If performed properly, growling does not actually affect the vocal chords. Screaming, higher pitched growling, squealing, etc. (why anyone would even bother with these vocal styles, considering the obvious risk and little reward is a mystery) will definitely harm the vocal chords. Growling, if done properly, is fine though.
When I listened to Opeth for the first time, I looked at the lenght of the songs on the record an thought it was insane that almost all song were 10 minutes long. I even thought it could get boring, but how wrong could I be... every second is just a masterpiece. Opeth simply fucking rules!!
@TheHydropsfetalis that's usually the case with people singing in english that don't speak english fluently. it's just something about it that makes you fluent in singing. I know it myself. I'm also swedish (like opeth) and when I sang in english way before I could speak any good it was fluently
@Thompaam MMM, not true. It depends a lot of your practice, and as the singer is always singing in english he has practice so he should be fluent, knowing that they have practiced before the concert its a little silly to believe your argument.
But, yeah, there is people that need to work out, normally people that began to sing in english in their adulthood.
@cubbex But at the same time, Sweden is the country that speaks the best English without having it as an official language. And with singing you adjust to the melody, and it becomes easier to sing English fluently
@Thompaam Even tho i'm swedish i've got to disagree with you, i know alot of people here are totally worthless at the english language, people above 60 can't speak a single word and alot of the people in my age(20) don't know how to speak in english, just type it, I think the country with best english outside of the english speaking countrys is The
Netherlands almost everyone from there speaks perfect english, atleast in my experience.
@Egartify Haha, and with some big accent. Every Dutch guy/girl you hear talking English you can hear that it's a Dutch person speaking there. But dont you get English lessons in Sweden? We do in the Netherlands, maybe that's why people here know how to speak English. I'm better in English than in Dutch. Grammar and stuff then. But if I need I can tell/write whole stories in English, rather than in Dutch. Also poems, in English their nicer than in Dutch when I write them
@zamg0d1 Man, I have the same problem. I'm Croatian and I consider Croatian as a much more beautiful and poetic language than Engish. Yet, I'm not able to write anything decent in Croatian because everything I listen to and read is in English. I'm more fluent in English than I am in my own mother tongue, which pisses me off, actually!
@FranLesPaul thats because english is the macintosh computer of languages. any retard can speak it. Im the same by the way, im puertorican but my english excels my spanish
@otherside65 I sympathise that your mothertongue is sidelined, I really do but please don't insult mine, it is a language of great complexity once you go beyond an everyday vernacular and has an incredible amount of expressive capability. I don't believe in the superiority of any language, I'd just rather you didn't describe my language as a "retard" language, thank you.
I believe there are no words to describe the beautiness of this song and its ending... it just sounds beautiful, misterious... a universe of musical colors en just 11:03 minutes... this is FLAWLESS...
@Benteiron You do have to pay attention to your picking hand because the last 9 notes of the riff are on alternating strings. I've been playing this song for years and I've never attempted to do any of Mikael's vocal parts, but I know that one would be very tough.
@BraydonSzafranski I actually tried it and i nailed it on the first try. The riff is ridiculously difficult to play, I agree, but when you learn it well enough you could play it with your eyes closed and while humming another melody... Its one of those "backbone"-riffs, you have to create nervous links to play it, which means just repeating it for long periods of time.
You can tell Axe is starting to get a better "feel" for Opeth, sounds good. But god damn I can't stand his drum micing though, sounds like a shitty Arena Rock kit. Lopez's snare had that bite, almost like a piccolo.
Gotta get this DVD. Seen these guys live 4 times. The only thing that saddens me is that I'll probably never again see them in a little club where you're three feet from the band and the guys are hanging out in the bar before their set.
@djmarkyno1 i like indie. but i like opeth too. elitism leads to closed-mindedness. opeth is great. and arctic monkeys are pretty good imo. i wouldn't say one is better than the other though. i like both kinds of music for different reasons, ya know?
Well... I bought the dvd last week and I tought that growl talk a bit idiot. If you buy the dvd you can hear mike's voice awesome as ever. Really, I'm not trying to hide the facts.
Fredrick misses a note in the Solo! Not big deal... peter missed notes on some solos too! Anyway cant wait for the next record and see axe and Fredrick's more mature work!
I have to say, although i used to be quite disappointed by Axe in his first times, at least confronting him to Lopez, that he showed in this gig to have become a very good substitute. He actually learned to play the old tunes in a very faithful way, and he also did a great job on "Watershed" 's drums.
Of course, he probably never will have the amazing amount of style that Lopez has, but, in the end, except for Danny Carey, who has?
@femminiello I was a little skeptical of him too but he has his own unique style and it seems to really show through on Watershed, I'm looking forward to see more of what he can do. Fredrick too, he adds a different kind of feeling with his own style of writing.
He hasn't changed his technique, he's not lazy (well, he is, but not in that way). This gig was played right after they finished touring a little bit, he's obviously just tired ^^
@metal0311 Stop denying the truth people... I am a growler myself and i can see that the technique is different and that its worse than earlier. The way he does it nowadays sounded great on Ghost reveries but he has overused it and thus done damage to his vocal cords. It is very straining on the throat to do it that way, i only use a similar technique for short, extra "brutal" parts.
@Benteiron i wouldn't say that people are "denying the truth." most people who've commented here have agreed that the growls are indeed different. at least i agree. but i wouldn't call them "bad" per se. i'd imagine vocal fatigue would set in after doing this for so many years. but to be fair, since this is only the first song of the entire blackwater park set, you can assume that mikael would have to conserve his voice a bit, especially since bp has so much singing.
@reggietheporpoise Exactly! So why is he straining his vocal chords so much in the first song? I´d imagine he had 4 litres of blood in his stomach when the gig was over....
@Benteiron whoa, that only leaves 1 liter of blood for circulation :p. nah, i'm not trying to disagree with you, man. his voice does sound a bit more strained than usual. all i'm saying is that this is only the first song of the entire bp album. bp has quite a lot of singing. during a gig, you can either sing very well, or growl very well. i'm sure he could've growled much better, but it would've been at the cost of his singing voice. it's about balance. don't mistake it for just vocal strain.
@reggietheporpoise but that being said, i agree that doing this for so many years must've done something to his vocal cords. i'd think that he would have to strain more for the more intense growls. so there has to be a balance between the quality of growling and the quality of singing. i'm sure his growls would be consistently better if they did all of my arms your hearse instead of bp, since he wouldn't have to conserve his voice as much for singing.
@reggietheporpoise But with growling the better you do them the less your throat is strained. This is no "Tie Fighter" where you have to balance with the amount of energy you want to use for you front and back shields :P The worse your growling technicue is, the worse you will start sounding over time. Mikaels old technique is good, doesnt cause ridiculous strain (i know, my growling style is almost exactly a copy of his :P).
@Benteiron agreed. that's what i'm saying. i guess over time, even with the old technique, his vocal cords were slowly affected. seems like his technique has changed and he has to be more careful. it's not necessarily bad sounding, though. and btw, could you pm me some time and explain your growling technique? i've always wanted to be able to growl "properly," but none of the vids i've seen have really been what i was looking for :p
@reggietheporpoise Yes probably, but you know, he did them for maybe 15 years without sounding bad, and then in 2005 he switched to this. Consequense? :P And yeah, these new vocals still sound amazing when he has it under control, but it somehow sounds that when he lets the control go it starts sounding lazy...
I believe the reason his growls are different is because he changed technique, from grunting to growling. growling is more open, and grunting is different.
I don't think his growls are fading - He's just using a more open-mouthed growling technique. The pitch of a growl is heavily determined by how wide you open your mouth. I think he gets the sound here by attempting low growls with a wide-open mouth - When I try to do the same, I get a similar sound. I personally prefer his old growls, but fuck, it's Opeth, they're always gonna be awesome so I think everyone should stop criticisng Akerfeldt's vocals - It's Mikael fucking Akerfedt people!
@SecretdwarfRS Who say's he sucks? From a drummers point of view, the guy is flawless. He has amazing technique and can play just about everything put infront of him.
@korrupt3r He's definitely a good damn drummer and I'm glad he's been added to Opeth. However he still has some work to do to match Lopez on some songs (see Master's Apprentices)
@timmah638 yeah i don't think the growls are too bad. you've gotta appreciate how hard it must be to go from growls to singing like mikael does. you've gotta partially sacrifice one or the other. mikael's singing sounds great here. i think his growls are a bit better on the lamentations dvd, but his singing is definitely better here. and it's a long show. he's gotta keep it up for the entire blackwater park album and more.
@timmah638 Hey that's all well and good, I know how hard it is too keep up the lower growls for an entire show, strains the throat and whatnot (especially since he smokes)...the only thing I don't want is for his growls to take a step down on their new album. It's passable for a massive live gig such as this, but not on a new record.
2 people are not having any affinity for leper whatsoever

Well... I bought the dvd last week and I tought that growl talk a bit idiot. If you buy the dvd you can hear mike's voice awesome as ever. Really, I'm not trying to hide the facts.

I love Mendez' bass work in the section from 8:59 to 9:37. That's not a lazy bass line.

Of course, he probably never will have the amazing amount of style that Lopez has, but, in the end, except for Danny Carey, who has?
femminiello 1 year ago
@femminiello I was a little skeptical of him too but he has his own unique style and it seems to really show through on Watershed, I'm looking forward to see more of what he can do. Fredrick too, he adds a different kind of feeling with his own style of writing.
mobman47 1 year ago
He hasn't changed his technique, he's not lazy (well, he is, but not in that way). This gig was played right after they finished touring a little bit, he's obviously just tired ^^
metal0311 1 year ago
@metal0311 Stop denying the truth people... I am a growler myself and i can see that the technique is different and that its worse than earlier. The way he does it nowadays sounded great on Ghost reveries but he has overused it and thus done damage to his vocal cords. It is very straining on the throat to do it that way, i only use a similar technique for short, extra "brutal" parts.
Benteiron 1 year ago
@Benteiron i wouldn't say that people are "denying the truth." most people who've commented here have agreed that the growls are indeed different. at least i agree. but i wouldn't call them "bad" per se. i'd imagine vocal fatigue would set in after doing this for so many years. but to be fair, since this is only the first song of the entire blackwater park set, you can assume that mikael would have to conserve his voice a bit, especially since bp has so much singing.
reggietheporpoise 1 year ago
@reggietheporpoise Exactly! So why is he straining his vocal chords so much in the first song? I´d imagine he had 4 litres of blood in his stomach when the gig was over....
Benteiron 1 year ago
@Benteiron whoa, that only leaves 1 liter of blood for circulation :p. nah, i'm not trying to disagree with you, man. his voice does sound a bit more strained than usual. all i'm saying is that this is only the first song of the entire bp album. bp has quite a lot of singing. during a gig, you can either sing very well, or growl very well. i'm sure he could've growled much better, but it would've been at the cost of his singing voice. it's about balance. don't mistake it for just vocal strain.
reggietheporpoise 1 year ago
@reggietheporpoise but that being said, i agree that doing this for so many years must've done something to his vocal cords. i'd think that he would have to strain more for the more intense growls. so there has to be a balance between the quality of growling and the quality of singing. i'm sure his growls would be consistently better if they did all of my arms your hearse instead of bp, since he wouldn't have to conserve his voice as much for singing.
reggietheporpoise 1 year ago
@reggietheporpoise But with growling the better you do them the less your throat is strained. This is no "Tie Fighter" where you have to balance with the amount of energy you want to use for you front and back shields :P The worse your growling technicue is, the worse you will start sounding over time. Mikaels old technique is good, doesnt cause ridiculous strain (i know, my growling style is almost exactly a copy of his :P).
Benteiron 1 year ago
@Benteiron agreed. that's what i'm saying. i guess over time, even with the old technique, his vocal cords were slowly affected. seems like his technique has changed and he has to be more careful. it's not necessarily bad sounding, though. and btw, could you pm me some time and explain your growling technique? i've always wanted to be able to growl "properly," but none of the vids i've seen have really been what i was looking for :p
reggietheporpoise 1 year ago
@reggietheporpoise Yes probably, but you know, he did them for maybe 15 years without sounding bad, and then in 2005 he switched to this. Consequense? :P And yeah, these new vocals still sound amazing when he has it under control, but it somehow sounds that when he lets the control go it starts sounding lazy...

sxestrid 1 year ago
I believe the reason his growls are different is because he changed technique, from grunting to growling. growling is more open, and grunting is different.

mateuslibra 1 year ago
I don't think his growls are fading - He's just using a more open-mouthed growling technique. The pitch of a growl is heavily determined by how wide you open your mouth. I think he gets the sound here by attempting low growls with a wide-open mouth - When I try to do the same, I get a similar sound. I personally prefer his old growls, but fuck, it's Opeth, they're always gonna be awesome so I think everyone should stop criticisng Akerfeldt's vocals - It's Mikael fucking Akerfedt people!

@korrupt3r I don't care what people say about Axe, he is a great and dedicated drummer!
SecretdwarfRS 1 year ago
@SecretdwarfRS Who say's he sucks? From a drummers point of view, the guy is flawless. He has amazing technique and can play just about everything put infront of him.
andyscoot43 1 year ago
@andyscoot43 Alot of people are really negative about him, I guess that's because they miss Lopez too much.
SecretdwarfRS 1 year ago
@korrupt3r He's definitely a good damn drummer and I'm glad he's been added to Opeth. However he still has some work to do to match Lopez on some songs (see Master's Apprentices)

Am I the only person who thinks the growls sound great? So they're not as low. Doesn't mean they're not fucking excellent.
timmah638 1 year ago 92
@timmah638 They are lower... And that is the reason of the "laziness" in the voice, he goes too low and cant maintain the tightness in his voice.
Benteiron 1 year ago
@Benteiron does it matter if he's "lazy" with his growls? they suit the music perfectly
TheBren93 1 year ago
@TheBren93 My point was that it was better and more fitting earlier when he used his old teqhnique.
Benteiron 1 year ago
@Benteiron ah right, fair enough, i think you're right actually, now i've actually seriously thought about it. spot on mate
TheBren93 1 year ago
@timmah638 yeah i don't think the growls are too bad. you've gotta appreciate how hard it must be to go from growls to singing like mikael does. you've gotta partially sacrifice one or the other. mikael's singing sounds great here. i think his growls are a bit better on the lamentations dvd, but his singing is definitely better here. and it's a long show. he's gotta keep it up for the entire blackwater park album and more.
reggietheporpoise 1 year ago
@reggietheporpoise This is the first song of the set...
Benteiron 1 year ago
@Benteiron yup, that's my point. i'd think he'd have to conserve his voice so it doesn't get too tired by the end of the set.
reggietheporpoise 1 year ago
@timmah638 Hey that's all well and good, I know how hard it is too keep up the lower growls for an entire show, strains the throat and whatnot (especially since he smokes)...the only thing I don't want is for his growls to take a step down on their new album. It's passable for a massive live gig such as this, but not on a new record.
MetallicOpeth 1 year ago
@MetallicOpeth Actually i think the high growls are more straining than the lows... But it could be just me :P
