Try to practice a few times with your hands on two different toms (or hi hat-snare, or just two different pieces, even a piece of wood and snare), the sound will help you memorize how it is to be like.. just a few times until you feel it

to my understanding you control the volume of the hit by the distance of your stick from the snare. So for an accent your going a little bit higher then normal and for a ghost you would be playing closer to the snare then normal. Someone correct me if im wrong, i just start playing drums which is why im watching this video in the first place lol

@theblotterproject it can also be measured in velocity say your doing pariddidles with no accents just change the velocity of one stick and you can get an accent also but you can do it however you like just make yourself feel comfortable.

@GGG123117 I used to have the EXACT same problem! What helped me was forgetting I was playing the hi-hat. I know that probably isn't the correct way to do it, but it worked for me. All I do is play the beat but pay more attention to my feet and the snare. Just ignore what your cymbal hand is doing and concentrate on the bass and snare. mauibaliton is also right though, just start slow and build up speed with practice :)

i know this sounds weird but.. if your snare sounds like that, cut out a round peice of paper and put it on your drum, just see if it sounds different, i think it does :)

I havent listened to blink 182 in years, but i still think travis barker is a great drummer, especially for the punk pop sort of genre he's in. He usually plays simple punk beats, so why not make a spectacle of it? Who wants to watch a punk beat played with the fingers and heel down,? Besides stage presence, he also has interesting technique (stick clicks, ghost notes, dynamics, etc) in songs like Always and Miss You. You might not like Travis, but you can still respect him, hes a great drummer.

Ok so, my only handicap with the paradiddle accenting is that i cannot literally raise my arms like he does... but what i can do is use my middle fingers to keep my speed and somewhat make the accent... but when i do that, my sticks bounce up quite a bit. I do this on a practice pad... any tips to make the arm movement feel less awkward?

ziegsy, the ghost notes are the same as accents, except that they are played softer, so they are recognized less. you can hear them, but they are not as loud as the accents, because the accents, quite simply, accent the whole sound. in a nutshell :)

i just bought a drum kit and havnt, im practically self tought cept for about 5 months of lessons 2 years ago, im far from good cos i havnt played in aaages but to be honest it doesnt really matter what technique you use, whether you move your arms about like your insane or just tap them, as he said its all about the wrist movement, if you get that little flick of the wrist at the end of the huge swing it should be ok. thanks for posting the lessons, il be using them as a guide!

cant be helped, the mic with the camera he uses prob has auto volume adjustment, so when hes playing the drums you dont just hear an extremly loud noise, has to turn volume up each time it notices something quiet
