"Ah Grand Master, cuts fasta"!!! Feeling the weight of the beat with the flick of the wrist was the best! And listening to that on tape is a whole nother degree of added flavor. Word up!
analog will always be better than digital. The only reason digital exists is for convenience, affordability, and efficiency. That's the whole point of technology.
Yo Flash i totaly agree wiv wot u saying there man n i wasent even born in the 70's n also hip hop wouldent be hip hop without u dude far two many DJ's these days hav no idea what hip hop realy is they need to take it back (yo how far back) way back as goes a lil something like FLASH big up mutch luv to the Real Hip Hop
Aww man, I'm so honored! Kids don't know what they have these days! I had to sell, stick-up, hop trains to go see this dude live! Grand Master Flash the God of the turntables! Peace bro...
With all digital recordings they equilibrate all of the top end frequencies so that you could never go above the "Redline" but analog, you can record your tracks that go above the redline giving more "depth" ....if you dont believe me listen to an orginal cleaned vinyl and a c version and you tell me which one has more depth and volume.
This is the shit. All the other is bullshit. This is seriously what the music we live today is built on. Poppin' KRS-1 for the digital. you can hear the fucking space in the sound. "as opposed to being a record, it's a file, a wave file". The sound is cut, stilted. You can hear the difference. Check the beginning when it is record and mixer only. 44,100 is not enough.
Vinyl purists r just fanboys, 8-track tape is the best sounding medium to record onto.
All mediums have their good and bad points, for example who wants to spend out for new needles everytime you lend your decks out to a party coz of a drunk dj.
Music should be about people getting together and having a good time... sure equipment plays a part but there are some anal mothercunters out there who wrongly think they are special. A good tune will cut thru ALL the crap, be it analog or digital.
@FUKTV 8-track was absolutely never a player in sound. It was the predecessor to the analog tape. It, like the tape, lost fidelity with each play. Quality needles will last hella-long time. I am not a DJ, but I can get by with my record player for more than a year on 1 needle using my record player moderately. Once the "fuzz" begins to attack, I am ready to buy another anyways. Digital has its limits. GMF didn't really highlight the difference, but you can definitely hear the 01 hits.
@ThePerQLator He's giving an example - a tutorial if you will, to the lowest common denominator for comprehension. That's EXACTLY what I was looking for! Got in a debate last night and some friends explained and I came here to find THIS! I'm O L D honey! '85 kicking LIVE!!!
@vytildie no hes not just giving an example and tutorial.. ive seen him do the same thing live.. theres a bunch of videos on here of him doing that and not much more.. sorry man.....
i really wish bands wouldnt have started using digital to record albums. i know it is easier but the true musicians are the people who can cut an album without the touch up and pitch correcting capabilities of digital audio suites
Analogue everyday of the week. Digital DJ's aint got a clue, downloading tunes off the next, or playing them from Spotify. When I Dj'd the best thing was buying a new record, or looking everywhere for that one record you wanted, finding it, playing it, mixin it, scratching it. The art of digging is lost on a Digital DJ, who probably just plays the same tunes as everybody else.
Plus, bit gutted Flash is plugging Activision, talk about corporate America.
id love to just spend a day picking his brain about hip hop origins. so..there were no mixers before flash or, there were but they just didnt have crossfader switches which he invented? or.. theres so many questions..
GMF invented a way to listen to the record that wasnt playing so he could mix records on time and on beat, which, as great as he was, Kool Herc couldnt do. Basically Flash is responsible for the "cue system" on mixers, they had xrossfaders, though.
Listing to da man hip hop was built in the 70's i was there my self as teenager. l can still hear the music that was play back then and it was heavy duty stuff, great stuff.
Vinyl sound best over all, bass treble dimension ect. When he switched to digital the bass on that sounded distorted big time and treble is too bright. vinyl rules!
Hey flash, this is an invite for you to come to new Zealand, a little country at the bottom of the pacific, next to Australia. I'm 15 and mostly likely your biggest and youngest fan. (at least in NZ!) my name is DJ Jazzy James, and I can prove my skills if I had some gear of my own (not hinting, honest!) keep the ball rolling flash, you've been the inspiration for many, many DJs around the world. Thank you Bro.
Oop, cant let flash on my decks, you see him drop that needle on the slipmat!!!! Ruined! Haha just playin, OG as all hell love it, thank god for the 70's
DJ Cyrus checkin in from the Boogie Down. One Love to Grandmaster Flash the Original Hip Hop Scientist. Now that he's vouched for digital equipment- We can elevate this DJ thing to an even higher level.
We did have cross faders back in the days. Before pioneer, rane and vestax, etc. we had Gemini, Numark and believe or not Radio Shack Realistic Mixers. All these had cross faders. Also if you were good, you could do fast cuts without a cross fader. I use to do it with a two channel Gemini (my first mixer I bought at an electronic store on Forty Doo-Wap & 8th Ave.)
give me vinyl all the time. digital has killed the art of djing and has killed music. Glad the mutha fuckers like Sony are losing money down to downloading. lol
@gregsrob it hasnt 'killed the art of djing' nd it hasnt killed music. i use a midi controller, but i never use the sync button, nor do i use cue points or effects. all i use on it r xfade nd volume fade, eq, jogwheels nd play button. nd also have u herd of DVS?. mixing with it is exactly like with vinyl, but u dont hav 2 lug around all ur records
The first vinyl track is as is said below the Whole Darn Family - Seven Minutes Of Funk...........Which is the dope bassline that Flash is going back and forth with. The one with the horns which he cuts to after this is Freedom - Get Up And Dance......awesome track from 1979. Both of these jams are available as part of the awesome compilation Ultimate Breaks and Beats which is available on CD and DVD.
I'm a unofficial GMF historian! Flash used his skills to come up with a fader system and peek a boo cue switch so he could hear what he was doing so that the beat wasseamless!
I'm glad Flash is still doing his thing and still important to the culture!
Best teaching tool ever is The Adventure Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels of Steel on ! Find that repeat what Grandmaster does before he does it that will teach you timing and you will see just how good Flash was and still is back in the day!
Yo Flash, do think that this technology saved the DJ's out there from dying out? I mean it might be new technology taking over, but it makes it easier to work with music, keeps you from luggin around crates, keeps you from having to carry your favorite records and wearing it out. Im thinkin bout buying one of those kits. Cuz Back then I didnt have the money, now im workin and it would be a hobby. I got the music in digital form, so one of those would be perfect. The skills stay the same
That opens up a forum for how people "crate digg" and, organize these days as well. I remember when you had to have help to move all them crates and build a crate barricade of vinyl around the DJ booth
