That electrical squealing you get from the Hornby live steam is not only irritating when running the loco's it sort of ruins the experience I find, the noise gets to me after an hour or so.I think its the superheating element that makes the noise as I cannot find any other source for it.Its not generated as a degisn feature as in there is no "Beeper" etc.Another thing is you cannot sound the whistle on the move, only when cycling from fowards to reverse, another "Shame" feature,ok otherwise.
The answer (I think) to your question is no, lolguy. There should be no 12v on the track when live steam is being used and vice versa. Each type runs on different voltages and power consumption. The only way would be to have isolated sections of track.
Ours met with a little mishap, without going into too much detail, leaving about 30 feet of twin track mainline destroyed and half the station, reconstruction is underway, but unfortunatly not live steam scotsman friendly.
as from 2 weeks time i will have a doble track going around my shed, will i be able to run a live steam on one track and and 12v on the other?
thanks

As long as the tracks are electrically isolated from each other and treated as 2 separate layouts, yes you can.
Have fun!

i meant like disconect the 12 Volt system when i run live steam is it still a no? and i mean disconect from the unit ( 12 Volt )

For some reason my answer didn't get posted lolguy543! Try again,
You can use the same track but don't have any 12v locos on it when running LS or LS locos on it when running 12v.
What it all boils down to is - DON'T MIX.
I hope that helps,

I'm very sorry to hear about that. I hope that the rebuilding goes OK.
(I'm sure it will end up even better than the original)
