  • How much weight woul you lose if you flute the barrel - looks like your rifle weighs a ton.

  • me convenciste de comprar un 223 en vez de un 17hmr :)

  • great shooting!

  • nice shooting i see some people dont know whar a moa is good clip

  • Nice

  • Beautiful job and beautiful gun. Quite a masterpiece you've got yourself there =)

  • That gun sounds epic

  • im just over 14 my dad reckons i could handle one any thoughts ??

  • im lookin at gettin an ar 15 and im gonna get a 5.56 nato, because it can still fire .223 if i want. .223 can shoot 5.56, but it could ruin your gun

  • why not load up to 5.56 nato? or are just chambered for .223?

  • I've looked and looked but cant find what 18 minutes vertical means.. Does that mean clicks up or down on the scope? Like 18 clicks up to adjust for the fall of the bullet due to it having to travel so far?? Thanks, just tryin to edjumicate myself!

  • @aussiedog29

It is a correction value, yes. Search for Minute of Arc on wikipedia.

  • @aussiedog29 60minutes=1 degree

  • I clicked on your video to watch you pepper the side of that hill with wild shots. Instead, I got to watch Scotty The Nailer. Nice demo.

  • Wow, you can actually see the bullet,, 2:51

Learned a new word today, cold bore shot,, humm?

Never tried Long range, my best so far, I can hit quarter size bullseye at 100 yards, all day long, looking forward to trying 500 yards now though. . .

  • Is the scope a NightForce? What kind of AR-15 is that?

  • were your rounds a little hopped up or were they normal .223

  • @PD5353 they were a little soft, actually.

  • Let's see your fucking AK-47 do this.

  • @MercenarySlick Best comment in the history of youtube right there.

  • @MercenarySlick

Dude have u ever seen ak with 24 inch havy barrel, mach trigger, hand loaded mach ammo and nightForce scope?

Think of guns like tools. You wouldn't use hammer to tighten the lug nuts on your car? would you? Same with guns Ak serves one purpes so does the AR.

Dont hate... I love all guns, makes and modles!!!!

To OP, great shooting. Wish I hade spare coin to drop on a NightForce!!!!!!

  • good shooting mate!

  • amazing

  • wish we could get these in Australia

  • pretty cool that the sound gets to you a few seconds AFTER the hit

  • Very nice shooting there. That target is torso sized, looks like you could take out some skinnies!

  • Wow very cool. I'd like to have one, yet i gotta finish payin my car off first :P

  • I love how you can see the back edge of the bullet on the way down.

  • you mind copying and pasting that link to the jbm ballistic calcualtor? Thanks

  • @beaconstructs

    Google: jbm ballistic calculator

    Takes you right to it.

  • @beaconstructs search,, Quickstart 2 Load Tab, G7 Handheld Ballistic Calculator. I.E. Pocket PC

This would have been awesome if he had used a target Cam, split screen!!

    Happy Hunting!!

  • Hey Scott what's your zero? I am just about finished building my heavy 24" barreled ar 15 and am just curious. Shoot me a message or somethin and we can talk long range. That is what I live for!

  • @beaconstructs

I zero everything at 100yds, and dial/hold from there. It's an easy reference point.

  • Good shooting!

  • dood! you can see the bullets trajectory for a sec, that's sweet!

  • Nice shooting.

  • does that gun weigh 14 pounds or something?

  • @GunFreak270 yep, like 15.5lbs actually.

  • nice vapor trail

  • What the hell it shoot/ .308 or .223? Big ass difference.

  • @TheMontanaDave

What did the video say it was?

  • are you sure that's a .223? looks like an Armalite AR-10 .308 to me.

  • @ld871111

Maybe you are right. Maybe it's an Armalite AR10 and not a DPMS .223.

  • @ld871111 it appears to be an ar10 because of the heavy barrel but if you look at the upper receiver it is an ar 15 also the 308 is a different sound

  • @ld871111 Gives ya the specs at the begging of the video. AR 15 heavy barrel.

  • Just playing with some ballistics calculators. What altitude are you shooting at? Guessing about 5000'.

I'm using the Knight program and Ballistic FTE(jbm engine) on iPod touch.

With good velocity data and met data how accurate are you finding your data? Is a 1 MOA common ( still great).

    Great shooting

  • great video!

  • does anyone know a cheap .223? I dont want an AR I would perfer bolt action or single shot for under $400

  • @annasajerk

Get a Stevens 200. They're produced by Savage Arms. With handloads, It's not uncommon to get sub half moa groups. I use 68gr. Hornady HPBT Match bullets, with 25 grains of Varget, and CCI 450 small rifle magnum primers. I spent about $310 after tax for mine, and the whole build cost about $300. For $600, you'll have a serious contender if you do your shopping right.

  • @sykop8ntballer I paid a little more for a Savage 12 VLP DBM LH but also very happy with shooting. Best 5 shot so far .216 MOA 100 yards with the same load as you. 25gr varget 68 gr BTHP Hornady but using WSR primer. I'm supprised if not a 5 shot group under .5moa.

Lighting it off with a magnum primers did you find tighter velocity spread. I have also used the BR4 primers but didn't notice a difference.

  • @hifly78 My best group is a little bigger than yours, with .256 MOA at 100 yards. I haven't chronographed my shots yet, but I find that my ammo lights off a little bit more reliably when I use magnum primers. With regular primers, I'll occasionally get a hangfire. Even with a magnum primer and a compressed load, there are only very slight signs of overpressure. I would not be surprised if there was a tighter velocity spread, this load seems to be very consistent.

  • Great shooting

  • How much did you spend on the rifle?

  • Damn nice shooting! Solid set-up you got there. Again...nice job!

  • when you calculated the trajectory at jbm, did you enter you scope height? that may have been what caused you to strike high on the first shots if the estimated velocity was accurate.

  • Yes. Imagine putting a load together with new power and a new bullet and guessing at the velocity. If you actually could guess within 50fps, why spend money on chronographs? Show me someone who can actually hit a ~700yd 10" target first-round in FIELD conditions with a semi .223 more than 50% with KNOWN loads, and I'll show you a world-class shooter.

  • i wasn't trying to sound like a smart ass. i just figured that you might have overlooked that.

  • No problem, I just want to make it clear to typical viewers some of what goes into LR shooting.

  • Basically, when you have a new load (powder, bullet, etc), the difference in scope height from 1" to 2.5" is the least of variables in guessing trajectory. I know, it was pretty lame of me to post a video where I was experimenting, but I figured that a lot of us shoot enough under controlled conditions with known gear that there is nothing too exciting about it. I really did not expect it to become sort of a poster child on Youtube for LR work.

  • from shooting that far away how can you tell adjusting the MOA?

  • GOOD HITS BRUDDA 5/5

  • Great shooting. I'd love to get into the AR platform but here in Canada all are just as restricted as handguns. I could still own one but am restricted to shoot at approved ranges only. A .223 bolt gun in the next purchase. I've had the .22 LR out to 400yards and looking forward to shooting to 6-800 with the 223. Thanks

  • I'm also in Canada just ordered a non-restricted Robinson Arms XCR in 223 so I can go out and shoot like this...

    Well try to anyway... :)

    Excellent shooting and nice rifle...

  • Hey Scott, what are the specs on the rifle?

    Thanks

  • DPMS Super Bull 1:8 24" CMC 2-stage Colt bolt GG&G rail TPS rings NXS 5.5-22 Harris BRS KMW PodLock Hogue grip.

  • Well, that displays the average IQ of PETA supporters...

    Enjoyed your video! Impressive :)

  • What animal? What are you talking about? Lay down the bong before replying, please.

  • You are a keyboard warrior and deserve to die. Im a proud member of the people who are annoyed by you.

  • No one cares if you support PETA. If you didnt know, PETA is becoming smaller and smaller in numbers. 10 years ago PETA was huge, and now there are maybe half the members. And what animal are you talking about? he is shooting at a steel plate? If it makes you feel any better PETA supporter.. I just dropped six coyotes today, and 18 this week altogether. Guess what.. You supporting PETA wont stop me from shooting

  • @football57football And, I killed several starlings along with a bunch of sparrows this week....fuck peta!

  • @football57football

You are now officlally my hero for that statement.

I am tired of PETA going around defending the "rights" of filth ridden varmints and invasive species. As a matter of fact, there is some species of feral hog causing so much havoc in the South, the very Wildlife Service says Unrestricted hunting of them! They frankly dont care if you find a group of them and empty a 30 round clip into the group. I am not making this up!

  • @football57football fuck yea

  • So do you firebomb buildings and cars on dealership lots, or do you just donate money so others can?

I for one HATE steel targets. I shoot them as much as possible, it's really the only thing they're good for...

  • @volraithe

haha you support a group that kills way more animals then the save. oh and one of the head people uses insulin which is made of animals. hypocrits at there finest. if they really cared that person would let her self die instead of supporting medical groups that use animals to make medicine. PETA is a huge joke and even most anti hunters hate them dumb asses. do some research. go to peta kills animals.com and have fun seeing how many animals they kill to how many they save.

  • very good i would like to see what your cap[able of with a more accurate rifle

  • Beautiful shooting !

  • DING!

  • Great shooting i have a dpms bull 24 and i would like to know the load data you used

  • Comment removed

  • 60gr Vmax, R-P brass, AA2230 about 1.5gr under max in that rifle.

  • Great camera angle, you can clearly see the vapor trail of the bullet. Also nice shooting even snipers don't always have first round hits.

  • What rifle? and total cost of setup?

  • Can somebody please tell me how to shoot long range?

  • @TacticalDude2 Find somewhere to shoot, get permission, set up a target, set up your rifle, make sight adjustments if necessary aim, use good trigger control, practice good breating, remember your point of aim, *fire* make more sight adjustments if necessary I have trouble finding places to shoot long range too, that's all I can say
  • aim and fire ahhaha

  • Great shooting with a nice AR15. what twist barrel does it have ?

  • U can see the bullet arc and dive....NICE!!!!

  • the military needs you man haha

  • I tried firing that far before with open sights using a 20" AR but it didn't work so well. I didn't have a spotter and my target was too small. I could use a scope like that.

  • Now that is some fine shooting. Light caliber and rapid fire no less, I'm impressed.

You put a pretty penny into building that machine but it looks like it was worth it, man.

  • Nice shots

  • Ok i gotta say this right now....

You have an incredebly nice setup....awsome video. I have an lwrc m6a2 and I love it.

  • SOOOO Sweeeet, great shooting. I just picked up a JP15 24" and topped it with a SuperSniper Scope....can't wait to get it dialed in. I'd love to be able to shoot like that!!

  • i feel sorry 4 who ever tries to break in your house and tries 2 get away lmao, i can hear them sreaming now. ''OOOWWE!!! MY ASSS!!'' LMAO

  • I would love to see another similar video using tracer rounds.

  • what u couldnt see the trajectory? ru blind?

  • your a beast

  • 1:52 sweet vapor trail!

  • I just bought and ar 15 from a gun show yesterday, i plan on doing some long range shooting. What scope, bullets, and bipods do you recomend for it.

  • Do some research on long range shooting, decide how far you want to shoot and look at what the specs (barrel length, twist, etc) are of your rifle. There are a lot of details to consider. If you are only talking a couple hundred yards, then it really doesn't matter a whole lot.

  • well, im planning on doing anything from 100 yards to 400yards. My gun has a .20 inch heavy barrel with 1/4 inch moa garuntee. I just ordered a bushnell buck master, do you think that will be good enough?

  • It might get you started. At those distances, you really won't have to correct too much, just learn your holdovers.

  • well scope is your choice

but u need to finds some good boat tail ammo sierra match king or somethin dont go above i think 65 grain unless your barrel is 1x7

if you shootin really far hopefuly u didnt get a 16'' barrel n u got a 20 or 22 inch

as bipods go i dont really know but just find a sturdy one that has features u like

  • actually i think the .223 has the same knockdown power at those ranges as it has at 200-300 yards. explanation? well, the .223 just passes through your body at close range even if you have body armor because it's a very high velocity round. At larger ranges it transfers it's entire energy to you, becuase the round does not pass through the body. Solution: hollow-points and one shot one kill would be the norm at close ranges. If you have other opinions share them!

  • above 2,700fps the 5.56 will usually tumble and fragment in soft material (like tissue). Below that it will pass through. So the round is more effective at short range against soft targets. 150 m or less out of a 20" barrel. For penetration on hard targets 200 m is optimum distance.

Energy transfer from a bullet does not incapacitate. Damaging vital organs by ripping and shredding a hole through the target, and allowing blood out and air in, does.

  • thats not true energy transfer does incapacitate it sends your body into shock

when your organs are hit with hydrolic shock from energy transfer it sends u into shock

bleeding will kill u no doubt but you can be bleeding and shoot back it's kinda like shell shock the shock wave throw u off it does the same inside your body cavity when your organs and nervs a delt a sever shock wave they tend to shut down or go into shock

  • From a bullet, though?

  • LOL well you can ask the insurgents in Iraq, Ive seen them get hit 3 to 4 times with the 5.56x45 round and still fighting. Its a good round at close range but id rather have a 6.8 or 7.62 IMO

  • That's because the US army is using M855, which is designed to penetrate body armor. The older X193 is better against unarmored targets like most of the insurgents in iraq and 'ghanistan.

  • The M855 and M193 behave nearly identically in ballistic gelatin.

  • m193 has a higher chance of fragmentation

  • Nice shooting bro for sure! Problem is that the 556.45 round @ 60g has little to no knock down power past 400 meters IMO. And at 680 yards sounds good on steel but probaly wouldnt kill much more than a rabbit at that range. Great marksmanship tho!

  • Thanks for the comments! I keep asking for volunteers to stand out there and tell me how it feels, but no takers yet.

  • damn i didnt know a .223 could shoot that far accuralety. could you kill an animal from the far?

  • a 5.56 with correct ammo and barrel can reach ranges off 800 yards

  • i muted the video and watched it again, to train myself to see the bullet headed way everytime.

  • man i just love the sound of a bullet hitting dead on a steel target.

  • at about 2:10 you can see the bullet traveling through the air...

I don't care what anybody says--guns are awesome...

  • HELL YEH!

  • good job for a 223cal.

  • there is a trail i looks like it has a slight arc

  • excellent job!

  • how big was the target i wonder? still good shooting!

  • 17 inches by 10 inches

  • impressive

  • is it just me or can anybody else see a vapor trail from those bullets on this vid

  • I was thinking the same thing. That's awesome and .223 at that range is impressive. Notice it takes about 3 seconds to contact.

  • more like 1 second. The round is super sonic so it takes less time to travel to target than sound to travel back. It arrives and hits, then the sound has to come back all that way from the target impact.

  • Yeah I understand that but count it out, maybe it's the video but by my count it's 3 seconds from mark.

  • think about it. over 3200 FPS leaving that barrel. Why you counted 3 was from the time it took for the report to return. Count from the first shot to where you see it hit the dirt in the upper right corner. Close to a second

  • Ah you're right, good call.

  • I caught a glimpse to.

  • Great shooting. That's way more than what I thought you could expect from an AR-15 type rifle. Too bad euro gun laws set the bar so high. I'd love to have a rifle like that for informal plinking.

  • Ding!

    good shooting

  • Hey Scotty, that's an excellent grouping. I love the rifle, DPMS makes some good guns. I'd love to have their 7.62 AR!

    S/F

  • What is the fps on the load you have? Is it a high charge load? I've never heard of a 60 grain v-max moly before, I have factory 40 grain v-max that shoot at 3900fps. Would the 60-grain have a lower velocity?

  • It's not very fast. I don't run them to the wall. I shot some 40gr V-Max in a .22-250 in a 600-yd benchrest match once just to see how they compared to the 52's, and they gave me an 8" 10-shot group, and the wind really played with them.

  • That's realy not vapor. The bullet is traveling at supersonic speed and that is actualy what you are seeing

  • that vapor / heat trail sure is neat.

  • That's very good shooting with a hell of a good rifle. It's impressive. That humidity and such a light pill.

FAO Scotty - did you miss the first couple of shots because you didn't aim low enough? (It looked down-hill to me..)

Brilliant clip. I bet that rifle cost you a fortune. :-)

  • Missed because it was a new load and also simply because the conditions change so fast for that bullet and distance that first-rd hits would be skillful manipulation of luck.

It's only a couple of degrees down.

  • i love seein the vapor trail, thats awesome

  • Holy crap that's only 60 grain, thats like a large 22.

  • wow van see the bullet heat and the round itself! awesome dude

  • nice shooting congrats on a good loading. Whats the twist for that heavy barrel?

  • It's a 1:8, great twist.

  • ive listend to ex navy seal spotters saying that you could see the whirls of heat waves when the bullet went through them. you proved him right....he also said that the back of a .5o cal could be seen on a clear day when looked at through a spotting scope. great shooting. great vid.

  • Absolutely superb editing and marksmanship. Perhaps among the best shooting videos on youtube. More videos please--perhaps at 1000 yards.

  • if u look close i think u can see the bullet

  • He is ex millitary, i know shocking right!

  • Seriously, I am just a guy that shoots. Thanks for the comments guys, I'm glad you like the vids.

  • I laughing to myself silently... thinking to myself, "there's hobby shooters, and then there's snipers. But there's also few snipers that are simply just, hobby shooters"

You do very well with the .223, one of the most impressive AR-15 long range videos here.

  • I couldn't hear everything you said about the barrel. Is it a bull barrel? And is it free floating? Very nice work!! Did you use just the bipod, or use a sandbag / some bag to stabilize the bipod from moving around (that's my problem, the sucker moves too much, I use bags).

  • It's a "super bull", over 1" all the way out. DPMS doesn't offer them in 1:8 anymore AFAIK. I use the bipod alone in front with a small sack in the rear to help support the stock.

  • At that range a .223 would not do a lot of damage, because it depends on speed to do its damage.

  • It's about 350 f-lbs -- basically the energy of a 123 grain 9x19mm at say... 10 yards.

Not the point of this video though -- this is simply marksmanship, not a display of lethality.

  • Shoot a pistol off a bridge with the sun to your back at around sunset or sunrise...make sure your back is to the sun and watch that!!! AWSOME

  • Yeah, especially a slow .45 load. Looks like a laser, sort of.

  • not bad shooting i have a .223 and a 708 and a .300 wsm btw the ar is a excellent rifle

  • awesome !!! i love the fact u can see the bullet's flight path

  • I can see the bullets:O concentrate on the area slightly left of the target. That's AWESOME!

  • Excuse me sir but what size groupings are you getting at a distance like that?

    Great Video By the way.

  • No idea on groups, I don't shoot for groups anymore. you can see from the video that it will pretty much stay on the 10x17 plate in rapid-fire mode.

  • ding ding ding ding,

damn dude, u just killed it

  • I picked up DPMS Panther Bull 20 and shot 50gr Federal bulk 1in groups at 100 yards first time out. Very pleased. I have variety of bullets from 40gr Sierra up through 69 SMK and 75gr Hornady. Blitzking and V-Max as well. Much cheaper than my 7mm Mag and easier on the shoulder.

  • thats good shit.

i bought a nikon 4-16x tactical scope for my A4 and if we dont get designated marksman rifles for my plt when we deploy im declaring myself the self designated marksman.

even tho you have modified loads its nice to see that you can make hits on small targets at this range.

  • try to get ahold of the 62gr HPs when you get over there man they shoot very well at extended ranges out of an A4. Tell your platoon sgt to get them when they order ammo.

  • lovely vapour trails there! :) good shooting!

  • Good thing I'm not there, but if any Californians want to trade Mono County to us for Clark County, I'll throw in some slimy politicians for free!

  • nice shooting.

  • how different do you think the results would have been if it had a 16 in barrel?

  • I have shot my light 16" at this range, and it is pretty tough. Basically 26" and the extra rifle weight gave me 200yds in extra accuracy.

  • Impressive shooting man..

I just got a Sig 556 with the 16" barrel. Only gone out to 100 yards with it given the outdoor range's limitations, but I'm shooting 1" groups.

I wish it could reach out to 700 yards like your rig though.
