One problem is trying to drill a strit hole with a hole saw, also your post may last 100 years but the framinng it is anchored to will get soft and wont hold the lags anymore. i still think if possable to run your posts right into the ground and keep preserving the wood every so many years

Your hole saw cut doesn't have to be perfect as it only helps the tube get tracked into the wood. You can direct the tube into the wood left or right based on amount and direction of force applied.

Just keep a look from two adjacent 90 degree angles and you can keep perfectly true with very little effort.

As for your suggestion, running posts into the ground is still common practice for some folks and nothing inherently wrong with it. Just a different approach with different issues.

Don't like that the overall width of the deck is reduced by a foot, as opposed to mounting on the outside. I also don't think you can get 100 year life span from a cedar post in any climate.

You can place the anchor base over the middle of the outside rim joist so long as the holes in the anchor base are lined up with the center of the rim joist.

That means if the deck boards over hang the rim joist by an inch then the edge of the anchor base is about 1.5" from the edge of the deck board.

Richard, you have broken the seal to the vinyl deck by screwing lag bolts thru the vinyl without in any way insuring that water does not enter those same bolt holes and get under the vinyl.

Possible you could let us in on the brand name and maybe sources or website for the vinyl coating for the deck? I have a deck over a back enclosed porch like a balcony to do on my 55 yr old house that's presently aluminum coated like a mobile home roof with a non-skid on it and it gets dangerous at times. The coating has to double as roofing since the floor of the deck is also what seals the first floor enclosed porch.

You could try contacting Duradek or Deck-King or Aqualine Vinyl Sales in Aldergrove BC or RPW Associates in Milton Ontario at 905-875-1108 as they sell a very high quality vinyl product and all accessories. They may also know a dealer in your local area. A roofing vinyl would be at least 60 mil (60/1000 inch) as that is required by building code.

10 per sq./ft. ? are u sure, because i just built a 25' x 5' and i spend allmost a $1000 just in materials, for the deck and railing and the railing was douglas fir. where u make ur money?
