In all fairness to Jay Leno (and I'm definitely not a big fan of his), the ratings for the Tonight Show began to drop soon after Conan O'Brien took over as host in the summer of 2009. This was several months before Jay Leno's 10 pm program started in the fall of 2009, so it's really not fair to say that Jay's low-rated 10 pm program was a poor lead-in for Conan and that's why his ratings were bad. It's all just a big mess!
@Chuck1974 In all fairness leno's tonight show didn't do well at the start either. Neither did Conan's late show at the beginning. You have to give shows like that time to grow, time for the right people to find it and time for all the others to adjust. Which they didn't and don't often do. And that's why television now is a hellhole of torturous bad ideas and terminal boredom.

A strongly rated show that precedes another program, normally giving the follow up show a boost in ratings based simply on couch potatoes who don't change the channel once the more highly rated show ends.

IMO NBC just lost any chance of developing a young audience that watches that show.

He may have agreed to step down simply because NBC gave him a long notice but it's NBC that asked him to come back. So he should say no because he accepted the proposal 5 years earlier to step down?

Rosie is so full of shit. At around 3:00 she says (paraphrasing) that NBC had unbeatable lead in shows. Bullshit. NBC's ratings have sucked for years. For most of this decade CBS has had the top prime-time shows. Leno was beating Letterman while CSI was setting ratings records in the early 2000s. The value of lead in shows is being exaggerated.
she was talking about the 90's when nbc was a network power house and CBS wasn't. Leno was able to build a huge following...by the time cbs was dominant (which wasn't until about five years ago) leno was already enormously popular

Jay's 10pm show was the one that completely bombed and the whole reason everything is being moved around to suit him. Conan was on the air for TWO MONTHS before the Jay Leno Show debuted, and Conan was already floundering. Jay's crappy show surely helped put the nail in the coffin, but Conan couldn't deliver the numbers from DAY ONE.
Anyone who doesn't have an axe to grind with Jay knows this, and further knows that this whole mess is just as much Conan's fault as it is Jay's.
For one, Letterman's ratings soared ever since his intern scandal as well. Also I don't know how you would gather that even "two months" of lower ratings than Letterman w/out Jay's shit show is proof of anything.

True, Jay did have a rough time when he originally began. The difference is though, the assumption amongst NBC this go around was that Conan would make the change to the Tonight Show with an already established audience that would gel with the 10:35 audience Jay had built.
But not only did Conan fail to keep Jay's audience, he also couldn't keep his own as ratings the Tonight Show plummeted nearly 60% BEFORE the first Jay Leno Show even hit the air. Those are not "wait and see" numbers.
Of course most of Leno's audience wouldn't hang around for Conan. Those are two totally different types of people.
I know it doesn't matter because the "numbers" are what matters to the powers that be. But have you ever wondered how real these ratings could possibly be? It's not like they're digitally seeing who's watching what. They're still dealing with an archaic 'viewing household' system.
Conan was never given a fair shot because Jay Leno, the lead in- sucked ass! All they needed to do was adjust the News time at 10 even back to Dateline News Magazine so that Conan has a chance. The guys like Zucker at NBC are jackasses!

According to a recent survey. More people knew who Stone and Digital Dave were nationwide than they knew who Howard stern was.
Fact 2: 99% of all people surveyed knew who Jay Leno was. 58% knew who Howard Stern was.
Fact 3: 96% of people who knew about or had Satellite radio knew who Opie and Anthony were as opposed to 75% knew of Howard Stern
Fact 4: Only 8% of peope betweeen 15-25 knew who Howard Stern was.

I don't think Letterman really tried loaning anything to Leno that would really help him. After bashing him for weeks about the Conan deal, Leno appears in a commercial with him. I thought it was rather humorous to see. For me, it did nothing to improve Leno's image. The commercial caused more damage to Leno from my perspective. Please, Leno could not be more desperate. He will FAIL.

Anyone who believes that NBC wasn't throwing Leno a bone with that 10pm show is a fucking moron. Affliates have been bitching to NBC for a decade for more consistent 10pm lead in shows to help their local news. Jay "held" good numbers established by the 10pm shows of the 90s, because who under 40 years of age actually watched the Tonight Show with Jay Leno just to watch it & not because of a specific guest? IMO NBC just lost any chance of developing a young audience that watches that show.

You make good points but you forget that NBC was asking Leno to bail them out in their 10pm slot where they were losing money. He may have agreed to step down simply because NBC gave him a long notice but it's NBC that asked him to come back. So he should say no because he accepted the proposal 5 years earlier to step down?

they forced leno out-they told him on 2005 he had to leave in 2010 - he didnt want to leave. when his show failed he wanted out of his contract..they said no.! conans numbers were low..nbc went to leno and asked him if he wanted his old back. Jay agreed im sure also to help his 114 employees! -nbc was afraid he would go to fox and beat conan! what if jay went to fox and conan failed on nbc.. then they r screwed!

Rosie is so full of shit. At around 3:00 she says (paraphrasing) that NBC had unbeatable lead in shows. Bullshit. NBC's ratings have sucked for years. For most of this decade CBS has had the top prime-time shows. Leno was beating Letterman while CSI was setting ratings records in the early 2000s. The value of lead in shows is being exaggerated.

Conan was on the air for TWO MONTHS before the Jay Leno Show debuted, and Conan was already floundering. Jay's crappy show surely helped put the nail in the coffin, but Conan couldn't deliver the numbers from DAY ONE.
Anyone who doesn't have an axe to grind with Jay knows this, and further knows that this whole mess is just as much Conan's fault as it is Jay's.

True, Jay did have a rough time when he originally began. The difference is though, the assumption amongst NBC this go around was that Conan would make the change to the Tonight Show with an already established audience that would gel with the 10:35 audience Jay had built.
But not only did Conan fail to keep Jay's audience, he also couldn't keep his own as ratings the Tonight Show plummeted nearly 60% BEFORE the first Jay Leno Show even hit the air. Those are not "wait and see" numbers.

Despite our disagreement I am glad you put these on YouTube. Rosie O'Donnell just gets up my ass and I was shocked to see Howard agreeing with her typical delusional ranting. As if Jay Leno prevented HER from being some big star! LOL

hehe. Oh believe me I can despise Rosie on plenty of things. I know she's a big 9/11 conspiracy supporter. Listening to her talk about that could make me furious.
But on this particular issue she's making sense and I love her anologies. Howard' hated Jay for a while so of course he loves it.

i'm not going to put a political spin to your comment but no one would shoot himself if they had a contract paying more than a 100 million dollars for doing a radio show in the future. Howard is bitter about the Stuttering John bit but I can't explain why he's mad at Jay. John is your boy Howard, he's the one that left you. I'm sure his other co-host Robin Quivers gets courted from other networks for other jobs and it's up to her loyal boss Howard that she is moving on, not her new employer.
